Phaseworld Space Empire

Unread post by Avenger »

Just wanted to post a setting that I've been kicking around for awhile now. Still in a rough draft stage but any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Trying to make a rather nasty space empire. Not exactly evil, though it can be considered evil in some areas, but more efficient. In many space settings there is an evil empire that claims to be democratic and free, however in reality it is very repressive and a pretty bad place to live in, and everyone is pretty unhappy. This is sort of the opposite. They claim to be monolithic and controlling; however it’s a rather good place for the average person to live in. They honestly do care about the good of society but are rather ruthless and sometimes the good of the many take precedence over the good of the few.

Tried to keep it as portable as possible to other space opera settings however I have it set for phase world. So far I'm thinking they have control over a few intertwined extra galactic star clusters that orbit the corkscrew galaxy and have a few holdings in the main galaxy.

Make the leaders of this stellar empire Master Vampires.

Make the vampires 50,000 years old.

Everyone lives the good life as long as they donate blood.

If that doesn't prompt you to buy it, I don't know what else I can say.

Are this Empire a human empire or something else?

Are you looking for a social structure? (Heinlein's original
Starship Troopers comes into mind, but Trek have detailed
a few civilisations - Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans and finally
Ferengi... - I hope taking their society for starting point is not
against copyright).

If these questions are answered, you can plot out their toys
(ships, guns, etc.) and their way of using them.

It’s a multi species bunch, though some groups are more influential than others. The main governmental culture is pretty darn close to Heinlein though. Has some earth humans that are kind of 80s sci fi in culture, stereotypical honorable barbaric warriors, ultra smart space elves, hive minded space insects, etc…

One of the main ones though are the clone grown humans, though genetically modified, made in breeds, and submitting themselves to bionics quite a bit. All of them are in the military, their memories and training downloaded at 'birth'.

Ships and guns and such… well, heavy use of cheap droid forces used in shock tactics backed up by the more competent clones.

Have some ideas on their equipment, can't post them here though as they are somewhat derived from robotech, though it’s more focused on zentredi technology/styling than earth forces.

Check DS9 for Cardassians.

They had this "Ubermensch" feeling written all over them
and they had a thing for automated killing toys. And actually,
while they goverment was a military one, actually they liked
to be Cardies.

Get ideas, but tweak them for your taste. (OK,
telling a duk how to swim, right?)

It might make into Rifter, but as a Netbook, go ahead.

While I prefer the Borg Collective without a Queen
(a unit used for diplomatic tasks as a "queen" is
viable, but not something with rights all over the
collective)...

...but whatever : the Borg Collective is not a PC
friendly enviroment, to say so.

the key is that for every bad thing the nation does, two 'good' things should be used.

the idea being that the 'good things' will hide the bad.

look at Imperial Rome. high taxes, militaristic, autocratic goverment. not the nicest of nations.

but it supplied free food, free medical care, and ensured free trade within it's borders. thus while the goverment was decried by many, no one internally wanted to do much about it because then they wouldn't get all that free lifestyle supporting stuff.

as long as the goverment is seen as not directly ruining the citizens lives, people will not care as much.

history shows this works for as long as the goverment can keep it up.
