The pausing to switch styles really is more of a game balance issue than a reflection on reality.

To better reflect an Ultimate Fighter, one should select a single style with a wider array of techniques (Jujutsu, Sankukai, Yu Sool, Drunken Style, Chin-Na, etc), in which the fighter has a selection of punches, kicks, trips, holds/locks, and/or flip-throws.

Any thoughts on this guys?
Actually, switching martial art styles is done between melee rounds.

And it's probably done for cinematic reasons. Lots of Kung Fu movies have characters switching styles.

In some cases, a real life martial artist might better be encompassed by an OCC such as can be found in Rifts Australia, or the Gladiator OCC (PFRPG Adeventures on the High Seas).
Combat Athletes as opposed to "dedicated" martial artists.

A Quick Roll character might also take the Combat Athlete Skill Program from Aliens Unlimited Galaxy Guide.

Kinthalis mentioned to me today that such characters would be best covered by taking Boxing, Wrestling and Hand to Hand Martial Arts (I'd have probably added things like Fencing, Kick Boxing, and Archery along with some other odds and ends, but that's just me).

The only real "problem" I have in using Physical Training for anything other than a higher-level HU campaign, is that Physical Training characters get (A) substantially higher bonuses to their attributes in general, and (B) either EXT PS or Superhuman PS automatically.
I love the PT character archetype, and use them a lot myself, but I wouldn't want to mis-represent them as something they aren't intended to be.

I tend to agree in general that PT characters are substantially overpowered for such a concept, however, the basic idea presented would be quite useful in making generic HTH skills which best represent such types of fighters.

Or, more and better HtH and "quickie" styles for characters who are fighter but not DMAs and WMAs.

"Quickie" styles are generally done as hand to hand skills.

It seemed that the HtH martial arts (Aikido, Karate, Kendo, et al) were somewhat less generic than the "quickie" styles as presented in N&SS, and definitely better than HtH Martial Arts and Expert (although, how can you beat HtH Commando, and the Auto-Dodge at fifth level? :-? ).

Thusly, I distinguished between the two.

 I completely overlooked them getting EXT/Su PS. I think I was mostly just looking at their HTH styles and had forgotten just how beefed up they are otherwise (I also noticed the natural AR the aggressive/deadly guys get, but figured most MMA fighters aren't 15th level). Yeah, that would be a bit much. Hm, well, maybe if you just have them rip-off the HtH skill without taking all the other stuff with the category and otherwise have them be Wordly Martial Artists (for limited skill packages). That sounds like the MMA way of doing things :P

(That or tone down the category a little. Superhuman PS for ordinary humans who just work out a lot is a bit over the top. I could sort of see EXT for those focused on strength, but not Superhuman).
Actually, the bonuses for just the hand to hand skills themselves is likewise over the top, with Aggressive & Deadly Combat and Fast & Defensive Combat having bonuses on par with Monkey Style and Drunken Style, though not quite as bad as the bonuses for HTH: Tarlock Martial Arts.

Then you should see the three variants of HTH Donathair in Rifter #5. Those bonuses are on par with Tarlock, and superior to anything in N&S or MC.

Is HtH Ninjitsu from TMNT still considered an "official" style?
Or, has it been permanently superceded by HtH Ninjitsu from Rifts Japan, and/or Ninjutsu from N&SS?
