I would go.
Sure, it would loose some of its charm, because seeing the Palladium homefront is part of the appeal. However, as long as it was still an all-Palladium bash, we would turn a blind eye.

Even if it IS at the Ramada I will be there.
Hell, they could hold it in an alley in downtown Detroit and I would go.

After his second game Saturday night, Kevin asked us if they should think about holding another one next year, even if it has to be at a location other than their HQ, due to moving.
I replied loudly that it wasn't a question, it was a requirement.

You know man, if you just put a bit aside each pay period, it can add up over a year. Just ask Greyaxe... who would otherwise have come home to a divorce proceeding for the ammount of money he spent.

Hey, I volunteer my in-laws' house... with its nice in-ground pool, covered patio area, ice machine, hot tub, and surly ex-USMC Burl Ives look-alike manning the two mammoth grills.
Only downside is that it's only 700 miles away from their current offices... but hey, FIL's ribs are worth the drive!
Well, also I'm sure everyone would want to be tossing the CS Grunt into the pool...

Is that 700 miles closer to me? I like that move.
Come to think of it, it would be...

Yup!
An annual Palladium convention is a good idea IF the company can make money after the cost of the space rental. The problem with future events is that convention space is VERY expensive.
I had no problem with the Ramada. I have stayed in worse hotels and paid higher prices and surly staff. We got a good price deal and good price deals come with weird funky stains. I am attending PolyCon next month and we will have a splendid high end hotel suites, but rooms are $180/night. Yeah, that's the baseline suite, not the presidential. So you gets what you pays for.
However, if Palladium could make it happen, I would love to be there!

I would certainly go again, warehouse or no. I'd also like to point out that the Ramada comes pre-stained, so they can't come down on us so much for trashing rooms. "No, I swear, that half of the room was on fire when we got here..."

Not at the Ramada for the love of god, that place is a rip off joint (still steamed over my screwed up reservations).
But virtually any where else on earth is fine by me
Isn't it somewhat expensive to rent a convention room at a hotel tho? I thought part of the charm of holding it in PB's warehouse (aside from gathering at the Center if the Megaverse ) was cost control. Why rent a space when you have one? Of course if they jump offices it simply may not be possible... I suppose even if they had to rent out a convention hall and weekend passes doubled in price I'd still be there. Taking the train next time tho, this 2400 mile round trip business is not getting repeated!

For me it wasn't screwed up reservations, but that the bed had a huge pit in the middle of it (I think it was a broken box spring).

Um...I'd offered to rent the convention hall and otherwise pay for the costs of hosting. We'll see if they laugh at me or not.
The bigger problem is when they'd be moving. It'd be at the exact same time as the time of the convention.

Ok not to be a wet blanket or anything, but you do realize that the reason Kev is saying there may not be an open house next year is that is THE weekend they would be moving the warehouse/office. Yes the OH could be moved to another weekend, but that entire month or two around May 2008 is going to be absolutely crazy for them.
Another problem with renting hall/banquet type space is the liability issue. If Palladium sanctions this they would be liable for anything that might happen. And if you hold it the same weekend as the last two years there won't be any Palladium staff there.

The Liability is the same at the Warehouse as it is at any other local, and the last two years it has been attended by well behaved folk. Really renting a ballroom for a weekend means that PB makes less money on ticket sales, which as I understand it is not the reason Kevin and co. hold the open house.

Again, insurance liability issues would come into play. If anyone got hurt moving the Palladium warehouse it would be very very bad for them legally.

No its not, the liability issues are much greater off site. Your dealing with someone elses property and they may require a much higher degree of liability insurance than Palladium has to have at their own building. And at the warehouse/office it is a controlled situation, completely controled by Palladium.

Is your dad running it as an individual or as a company? If the name of Palladium Books is attached to the OH then the corporation is liable. Its very different for an individual throwing a "con" and a company sanctioning it.

He runs it with the Washington science fiction society and they run it as a non-profit group. I am pretty sure that carries the same types of liability, but really I think you've been reading about frivolous cases on the sound off forums too much. Its a gaming convention not a rock climbing expedition, the worst thing that can happen is a stack of book may fall on you. holding it a hotel should really have nothing that can come back on Palladium.

I work for an insurance company, I understand corporate liability very clearly, thanks
And no a non-profit doesn't work the same as a for-profit orginization.
As for what might happen, all you need is someone to trip on a skid, or over their own feet and get hurt. As long as Palladium doesn't sponsor it and has nothing to do with it, then no, holding it at a hotel or convention area wouldn't come back to them.

Maryann wrote:Ok not to be a wet blanket or anything, but you do realize that the reason Kev is saying there may not be an open house next year is that is THE weekend they would be moving the warehouse/office.
I was thinking of naming it something else, and forming an LLC to be the sponsor of it. I wouldn't be asking that they sanction it - though I'd give them free space for anything they wanted to bring (actually, I'd charge a buck to establish the veil of protection for 'em). I'd also buy insurance to cover any problems (which would be relatively cheap).

There's a reason...and a very good one...that I have certain people in this forum blocked both here and on Facebook.
I can see an illustration of that nearly every time I come here.

Is your dad running it as an individual or as a company? If the name of Palladium Books is attached to the OH then the corporation is liable. Its very different for an individual throwing a "con" and a company sanctioning it.
To be clear, I'd be running a convention for fans of Palladium. I would not be asking Palladium to sanction the Con, though they'd all be welcome to attend and would have space for sales and the like. All profits would go to Palladium as a donation at the end of the convention (I'd pay taxes first though).

Was that the in the first room you had or the room you had with Lonnie and Kendra? If it was the second, then you were sleeping in my bed and it was fine for me. Except for the gas I had from tacos.Subjugator wrote:asajosh wrote:Not at the Ramada for the love of god, that place is a rip off joint (still steamed over my screwed up reservations).
For me it wasn't screwed up reservations, but that the bed had a huge pit in the middle of it (I think it was a broken box spring).
