Do selfish or good deeds, and quit doing actively evil deeds.

Well, if you want a FAST track way to do it, and you're in the right place at the right time, you can:
-Use the Old One's rec room from the PFRPG book The Old Ones.
-Step into the White Light at the Asylum in Atlantis.

So does that mean an evil character who's working undercover and does nothing but kind, charitable things for years will stop being evil, even though he's only doing them to make sure nobody suspects him? :)

The main penalty should surely be withholding experience for role-playing if the player is trying to circumvent the alignment for their own advantage without consideration of what alignment should reflect. In this case maybe agree a mutual period of seessions or event to trigger the 'official' alignment change, and the carry on rewarding roleplaying with the new alignement.

If the alignment change is a Road to Damascus (or Road to Perdition.... :) ) moment then I would go with it, and if roleplayed well not penalise the player/character, as this kind of thing happens in dramatic fiction. However, the character may have to fight against their previous reputation.

No; your character generally has to want to change.

On the other hand, it's certainly possible that an evil character, by pretending to be good, actually does become a better person. That by trying new methods of doing things, they come to like the new methods better than the old. What may start out as acting may become reality.

Intent has to be a consideration. Just because someone ask God for forgiveness doesn't mean they are just forgiven, they have to truly mean it. In the example above the evil person is "acting" good as a means to an end, at the very least making him selfish. Of course many comics, books, and movies have used the plot of a person pretending to be good, and after it no longer being necessary they find that they have changed and are no longer the wicked being they once were. Would make for an interesting roll playing character as there would be a lot of situations that would be fun; like running into old pals who don't know about his/her change of heart, or keeping your newfound good streak hidden from your crew of black hearted villains.

this is true, most christians don't read their bibles so they don't understand that it says that God can only forgive you if two things happen. 1) you forgive yourself and 2) that you truely repent and stop doing wicked deeds...

Not quite. The repentance needs to be legit, but pretty much every christian denomination believes that we're all sinners and that no man, even after he's accepted Christ, can possibly live a life free from sin.

Plus the new testament hypes the everloving crap out of the notion of salvation through Christ, which is why so many denominations (especially a lot of the protestant ones) preach that faith in Christ is the only factor in determining who's saved and who's damned. The average suburban bible belt resident might not have bothered to read the Good Book, but the creed he subscribes to is the end product of centuries of theological debate and study.

I allow alignment "drifting" in my games. If a player begins not playing their character to the correct alignment description, and this happens over a few adventures. I’ll adjust their alignment to match their playing style.

So if a character that is Unprincipled, begins taking actions that seem more selfish or evil, and is consistently doing this numerous time over a few game sessions I’ll move the alignment toward evil making it Anarchist.

The same is true for evil characters that begin exhibiting goodly traits, mercy, and kindness.

I determine this first by if the player wishes to switch alignments and then they being acting out their changes in their morals and beliefs.

Secondly, I’ll do this as a punishment for really “out of character” play.

this depends on the doenomination... there is much that is being shaken up within the church these day; people returning to the ways that the bible speaks of and not the ways that people of the apparent church speak of.. that of which i spoke of is in both the old and new testiment.. it is true that you can not truely be sinnless but if you strive to be so no matter what with christ in your heart, then......

whatever, it does not matter.. i was only making a point nothing more.

Throw the char through that doorway of light on atlanits, or use the magic circle that changed Xy into Thoth....or some other life changing event, like repentence brough about by the Good News.

Repentance is a 180 in one's way of living life, without change there is no repentance, thus if you want your char's allinment to change then they need to make a life change, and living that change.
