Cosmo-Knight question
When a character becomes a Cosmo-Knight, do they loose their specific racial traits? (like an Elf's nightvision or a Slurmph's slime abilities)

No.
This has been discussed a few times before, and can be found in the new FAQ. Nightvision, hearing, sense of smell, and other, physical/ natural abilities are kept.
Eyes without life, maggot-ridden corpses, mountains of skulls... these are a few of my favourite things.

Light a man a fire, and he's warm for a day; light a man on fire, and he's warm for the rest of his life.
Turning the other cheek just gets you slapped harder.

Looking over that Q&A its more of a general consensus like most other discussions that relate to this topic.
Personally, I'd go word for word with what the books says which is what Gadrin said, kinda. When you go with the forge you are essentially reborn, its like being a Corrupt or Cold Blooded. Your no longer a member of your race other than in your appearance (and even for the latter 2 its still warped).
Think of it as becoming a Herald of Galactus, The Silver Surfer is still a humanoid looking person, but he was imbued with so much power that he changed into a completely different being. When he became a herald he was no longer Norrin Rad of planet xyz, but instead he was now The Silver Surfer, Herald of Galactus. Same thing for a Cosmo-Knight...you are no longer Jimmy Smith the human, but instead you are reborn and impowered to serve the Forge as (insert name here), Cosmo-Knight.
That's how I look at it at least. Even keeping physical abilities can be a pretty fine line for certain races.

ok since Slurmphs are unable to speak a language, relying on telepathy instead, does being a cosmo-knight give them the ability to speak?

I'd say they still use their telepathy to communicate.
