Yea I think that's a good idea.

We use 1E hand to hand fighting skills, where O.C.C. is assigned its own hand to hand skill; clergy/men of magic get a "non men at arms" skill.

Yea Martial Arts is for Palladins exclusively, when I have things my way, that is. Knights get Expert automatically. Soldiers and Mercs get Basic for free, or upgrade to Expert for a skill.

Although I've not had the chance to actually implement this yet.

I tend to allow any character to use any Hand-to-hand, provided they can give me a good "in story" reason for the character to know the skill. It has to be an honest to Gods fleshed out part of the characters background, otherwise I'll veto it. I'm one of the GM's who likes to let his players do things their own way in the interests of keeping the game fun and entertaining, but I won't be a pushover either. So prove to me that it works, tell me how they learned it, and I'll let just about anything happen. Just don't be surprised if it comes back to haunt you later!

"Unhand me you slobbering son of an Orcish whore!" - Ariana Moonstone, Palladin (Another primary character of mine.)

"Bastard!" War cry of Strut, Barbarian Mercenary. (That's for you James!)

Joscap wrote:I decided to use the HTH out of first edition, I liked it better (more flavor), but keep the classes basicly the same in second, with the addition of the shaman occ and the druid from 1st edition.

Has anyone else tried this? Where was the second edition equivalent of the Shaman and 1st edition druid? I know someone told me once, but I can't remember where.

2E's Shaman is in Adventures on the High Seas, the Druid is in the PFRPG 2E main book, with the clergy. They refer to them as something of a nature priest/priestess. Personally, I like the 2E version of Druids better than the 1E.

I only limit to what the O.C.C. allows if it doesn't give a option to upgrade the class can't upgrade.

Same here. If the OCC can take HtH MA, then why nerf it?

Because there's more to a combative class then its H2H skills; and those who get the skill automatically should get to keep that edge.

Not to say that I don't allow upgrades; but it requires good explanation. And a mage should never be a superior swordsman to a trained mercvenary warrior.

Why not that is one of the great things about palladium if I have the same hth has you and they same weapons whe should have the same attack has each other. I much prefer having the choice over the standard D&D way.

I do like the plyers to give me a story reason as has been suggested. It helps the player understand his character better and gives me storyline to play on.
"Oh! Your wizard studied under the famous militant, Shadrach the Conjurer! You know he ticked off the Brotherhood of Lampshade Skinners last year, don't you? They'll be after you, I expect."

Well, I have no problem with you assign background story, but not just because someone has a hth not if you are not going to do it for all. Generally only come up things higher level issues like R.C.C.- taking a O.C.C. or such, but to each their own I guess. Though personally I think you are being over powering to fighters types, because tend to get more skills and don't have to pay for their hth. I find most wizards are very low in the skill department and find taking a Hth costly them a little over costly at times, but that is just me.
