Could use a little more information first.

When you say similar to Bloodsport, do you mean that no fighters will have Chi Powers? Arts of Invisibility?
Will there be weapons?
Multiple opponents?
Is there a prize?

What martial arts styles will you be allowing? Which ones (if any) will you be restricting?
How many players? What O.C.C.s are permissable?

Generally speaking, you will probably find that styles such as Tae Kwon Do, Thai Kickboxing, and Xing Chiao will be favored by the aggressive fighters. These guys (and girls) can usually be over-confident & cocky show-offs in terms of personality (although they do not have to be), while a Snake Stylist will be more subtle: quiet, and understated, lulling his foes into a sense of false security.

I would say so.

It has excellent moves, a good number of attacks (4 at level one), and some nice special moves as well.

Very well suited to an agressive, direct fighter.

And yet, and Akido fighter with a good Chi and the Soft Chi power could clean them up.

Well, it comes down to dice rolls.
Even loaded up with 100 chi and Soft Chi, if the non-chi master has better bonuses to Strike/Parry/Dodge, and manuevers like maintain Balance and/or Breakfall, then the non-chi master has an advantage, especially if they have more attacks per melee.

Of course, a natural 20 pretty much trumps high bonuses...

It would not the first time I defeated a Chi master with a martial artist who had Tang Su.

One way to do it is limit to same MA style vs same MA style.

Like a Tae Kwon Do tournament or a Ninjitsu tournament, etc.

Then the winners of each compete in a free-style tournament. This would determine the over all champion. Of course this last tournament could be volunteer only if you want.

:D

Although the character was never given the opportunity to play, I rolled up a Talus (Rifts Dimension Book 4: Skraypers) with Monkey Style kung-fu.

I managed to keep the secret from other perspective players by calling it Tai Sing Pek Kwar, which is a near-equivalent of the actual Chinese name.

I think one anime that would make an excellent N&S sourcebook would be Grappler Baki; that was simply one great show (and had one of the best tournaments I've ever seen)

Grappler Baki was a very entertaining OAV. I do recommend it. 8-)

Not to break any conversion rules but could you imagine trying to stat out Yojiro Hanma? His bonuses would be insane!

Within his own context, yes.

Would Baki Hanma be such a master compared to Kenshiro (Fist of the Northstar)?
Probably not.

It is important when building such characters who are based on other inspirations to not let the "wow! Kewlness" get away from you, and keep everything in scale to everything else.

Again however, I did very much like the OAV, and Baki Hanma would be a very excellent character to build an inspiration on.

None of us were fluent Chinese Speakers.

I was working from an approximation I recalled from a series of articles on Master Paulie Zink.

I suppose I would have been more accurate with "Tai Shing Pek Kwar".

Fair enough. I was assuming that while Kenshiro might be known to those posters/readers who haven't seen the anime, Rei and Raoh might not be. 8-)

Well, Ken had a BMF wallet, but Raoh still spanked him like a naughty schoolgirl.

Out-of-curiousity, have you seen both endings?

In one, Raoh is clearly about to throw the death-blow when the girl Lynn stops him.

In the alternate ending, both Ken and Raoh are about to strike each other, but are stopped mid-blow by Lynn.

I like the way Raoh's win and sparing of Ken ties in with what their father tried to teach him about power and perception.

I would not attempt to qualify one as better than the other.
I'd simply recommending seeing them both, and seeing how you like each version.

GM/Player originality?
Inclusion of special abilities & Martial Arts powers not found in the film?

The players can be left to their own devices. As to the GM, most of the fighters in the movie are essentially cardboard cutouts with only their fighting style and clothing to distinguish them. If the PCs don't interact with them outside the fighting area there's no need to flesh them out. If Gaby uses the fighters from the movie, it's a good starting point and makes things easier. Although MAPs can be added depending on the power level of the game. The big deal for me would be NPC tactics, but that would generally be covered by personality

A coin flip can add a tiny bit of randomness. But I'd use GM fiat when it comes to the "big bad".

I've had some luck with shortening fights between NPCs to a series of four "quick rolls" (roll D20, add PP attribute: highest score wins), with two rolls each. Tie-Breakers are resolved with one hit each as per normal.

I love that GN. I have two copies myself. Since it is long out of print however, I didn't think to recommend it due to it's being so hard to acquire.
