Question on an adventure I am running.

Unread post by Astral_Explorer »

The group has just been hired to go into the sewers to rescue some goblin sewer workers who have gone missing.
Reports of something perhaps a monster being down in the sewers have set the city to allowing the use of some weapons during that operation. Now obviouslly explosives and heavy md weapons are out. The city doesnt want the sewer infrastructure ruined after all. Also as some areas have pockets of methane they will not authorize the use of flame or plasma based weapons for risk of explosions.

melee weapons including vibro weaponry have been authorized as well as personal firearms.
sdc weaponry, possibly Ramjet rounds for the pistols in case they need heavier firepower.

Still, Ion, Laser, Plasma and most energy weapons produce heat.

What types of weapons do you think could be used without fear of an explosion or massive damage to the sewer system ?

Thanks for any replies.

p.s. The group is composed of mostly tech oriented characters with the possible exception of a new character who might play a cyberknight or perhaps a mage.

First; is the ban on lasers and fire-type weapons your way of limiting "power"?

Second; ramjet rounds, as well as personal firearms and the like are almost as likely to ignite the methane in the sewers as the above weaponry (hammers of the gun, as well as the combustion of the bullets' powder will do this; ramjet rounds are miniature rockets, equiped with a fire-tail and everything).

Third; railguns are the safest option, as they do not produce a chemical reaction, and it might take a few shots before they get hot enough to possibly ignite methane pockets.

Also, players are what they are; they will see this as a way to deny their characters the primary focus chosen by their OCCs. Maybe instead of limiting weaponry, offer that any collateral damage to the sewer system be taken out of the reward offered, and that significant damage might result in jail-time. Then I'd inform them of what repairs cost and such so they can get a perspective and make their own judgement call.

Good point on the ramjet rounds.

No it is not a way of limiting power, simply adding a touch of realism.
They could very well wander on down their with prohibited weapons etc.
As with any group they could obey the laws or not.

While it is true they can reduce the reward from damages done, the city would rather avoid such damage
in the first place. It is kind of strange most rifts weapons will cause the methane to ignite and while the group would probably be ok in sealed environmental armor the underground cables, pipes and other structures could come lose or cause further damage. It might even kill the Goblins if they are still alive.

I would like to offer them a list of Ok'd weapons they will be authorized to use.

Dont want to reveal too much here as they might be reading. :D

Another option then would be a "methane-o-meter", a way of testing the immediate vicinity for methane build-up. Light is green, weapons fire allowed. Light is red, melee only. That sort of deal.

They actually do have something like that.
Each one of them has a card they can clip or adhere to their armor that gives an audio cue when there
is the presence of methane.

I think I will give them the go ahead with an. (At your discretion) in areas where the alarm doesnt go off
you may use normal weaponry.

Of course if the Special Forces guy choses a human size or roughly PA suit he could use the things enhanced strength.
Also gas type weaponry without explosive components is probablly a go.

Thanks for your input I really do appreciate that.

The TW stuff would have been a really good option but the group is almost all tech.
Though the Operator did end up with psionics, and the Special Forces guy ended up a minor psychic so
they have atleast the possibility of using such items.

It should be interesting right now they are agreeing to have camera's hooked up to their armor's so that a xenobiologist could study what they might encounter. I keep getting images of the Aliens movie.

Vibo-swords, neual maces, and SDC weapons are the first to come to my mind. Also some of those TW weapons mentioned are a good idea.
