It's your game world -- DO IT!!!! It could be a very fun time. That and the NEMA-boys would think you were a group of Dee Bee's coming to wreak even more havoc.
I once had a group rift to a future version of Lone Star where they got to see the possible outcome of their actions, but then they had to figure out if the future they had visited was the result of their planned actions or the result of the fact that they had rifted before they could commit the act. It was a BLAST!!!

"The impossibility of the world lies in the fact that it has no equivalent anywhere;it cannot be exchanged for anything. The uncertainty of thought lies in the fact that it cannot be exchanged either for truth or for reality. Is it thought which tips the world over into uncertainty, or the other way around? This in itself is part of the uncertainty." - J. Baudrillard

Return to the past to save the future? That's good stuff.
For extra fun, don't tell your players where they are going or where the showed up. In fact, have them show up a few days BEFORE the Apocalypse and have them try to fit in. They may think they showed up in some Phase World planet or alternate Earth and then blammo, they get to be ground zero.
Imagine NEMAs reaction to D-Bees before everything erupts...imagine the PCs terror when their magic is so incredibly low and then within days goes off the charts, but becomes hard to control...imagine what happens when they rescue a little boy from the wreckage and learn his last name is Prosek...

Most GM hate to here this but, 'Rifts can take you ANYWHERRE'.
They hate it because when they ask why the Samurai you are playing in South america, the ussual responce is, 'aahhhaaa, he got rifted there.'
Remember, when a char gets rifted back in time, if they are there more then a small amount of time, they can not go back to their begining time, because they have already change the past by just being there.

May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.
