He could be a tattoo master. You'll have to ad-lib it a little, in the number of magic tattoos he would have, and exactly how some function in an SDC setting, but he would be powerful right out of the gate, could set up with apprentices he's training to be tattoo men if he escapes, and it's a type of magic unknown or at least very rare in Palladium fantasy.
- If I never hear real world military buffs complaining about Rifts weapons technology again it'll be too soon
- Rifts isn't Warhammer 40K. Try to remember that.

Herbalism, from WB: 3, with spells from the Shaman Plant list from WB15.

Or, ya know, regomancy

GamerX wrote:Ok, here's the scenario, if it plays out according to plan: Palladium Fantasy setting, fairly magic-heavy campaign. The group is set to awaken an ancient mystic who has been in stasis. since the Time of a Thousand Magics, and was possibly already ancient in that time. What I haven't settled on is what type of magic the ancient mystic knows. I want something that would be completely unknown to characters in the Fantasy setting. Also I want it to be something that, if the mystic is allowed to escape and develop a power base and find some able apprentices, he would stand to pose a serious threat to the Palladium world.

Does anybody have any suggestions for a good type of magic to use? It can be from any setting, Rifters, online, whatever. I have ruled out Rune Magic, and I'm not too fond of the idea of using bio-wizardry at all. I would like it to be something readily accessible (like wizardry as opposed to diabolism) so that the mystic could put up a good fight right off the bat (though if it requires rituals or crafting items, it would be ok as long as he could have something set up that he can use immediately upon coming out of stasis).

The party has a Mind Mage, an Lifeforce Wizard, an Undead Hunter (Fantasy-flavored, not Rifts), a Summoner/Diabolist, and a couple of good non-magical fighters. The associate with a Mummy Immortalus Necromancer (yes, I am aware that there is an Undead Hunter in the group), and a Stone Mage (a la Rifts Atlantis, though the party thinks he is a Warlock).

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Does it have to be an actual one that already exists?

If not: I suggest using the magic rules in the White wolf game "mage". A mage who's only limited by his imagination and skill would be a severely deadly foe.

If you want something that is from the books:

Techno-wizardry. This makes him a serious threat, because he can make magical items (possibly en mass), and give them to common people to fuel his army. Unlike normal magic items which, if your opponent is destoryed can be used against you, TW magic has a limited supply and if no one in the group is from rifts, they wouldn't know how to use it. You probably wanna steer clear of "laser pistols"...but a lightning rod and flame sword all hold the fantasy element.

Another idea is the Conjurer from Federation of Magic. Same concept as my first suggestion, but with more emphasis on material things.

I would sujest nothing the canon books, not even ones from other settings, and use a mage type from the rifters.

an Undead Hunter (Fantasy-flavored, not Rifts)

from yin-sloth warrior mage undead hunter or is it the tattoo man type of undead hunter?
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.
Each question should be give the canon answer 1st, then you can proclaim your house rules.

I've been looking at Herbalism as a possibility, but I'm not sold on it. Regomancy, on the other hand, shows quite a bit of promise. "Cower, foolish mortals, before the awesome might of Lord Mercury! Buwah-ha-ha-hahh!" Yes, quite a bit of promise indeed.

Another upside to regomancy: If the NPC is female, you can introduce him with "Killer Queen"

I recommend Chi magic from Mystic China. A character pumped up with Chi abilities against a group who's comepletely unprepared for him could really mess them up. And in a world not used to it he could cause huge problems if he decides to train disciples. To make it work best you would want both Ninjas and Superspies and Mystic China.

How about Life Force Wizard.

From your description this would work well. One of the books has a Gromek Life Force Wizard who I also believe harkened from the time of a thousand magics. They are like mystic vampires draining life force to extend their own lifespan.

I could see a kingdom forming around such a leader and his chosen, a dark kingdom with sentient life form sacrifice etc.

There's already a lifeforce wizard in his party.

With Chi magic, the wizard isn't bound by verbal conventions. Their magic doesn't require vocalization and their "scrolls", instead of being read out loud, need to be burned to be activated. The martial art they get in order to learn Chi magic also offers diverse abilities that, while mystical, are not necessarily magical. One of the rifters had an article with suggested conversions of the Chi mage and other chi abilities into the Rifts setting. You could use those notes to bring a chi mage into Palladium Fantasy too since they're both high magic, just remove the MDC notes and make it SDC with Armor Ratings instead where applicable.

All this has got me iching to play a conjurer in a palladium setting. I wouldn't like it in the rifts setting, but in the palladium setting, he'd be alot of fun.

One of the Rifters offered some kind of Card magic. And another one offered candle magic too if I remember right. Rifter 9½ has two mages, one is a traditional spellcaster with spells related to jokes and trickery, and the other is a different type of mage whos magic is based on playing cards. Not to be confused with the card magic offered in one of the Rifters.

A lot of people seem to like the Spatial Mage, presented in one of the early Rifters. There's another idea.

Something scary and a real threat for the Palladium world? A flesh sculpter.

They alter bodies and minds and are basically a minion creation machine. The beauty part is there are so many non-supernatural monsters and races in Palladium that he can make some seriously scary stuff.

It's in through the glass darkly, the night bane magic book.

A really evil Fleshsculptor could break down any character, and with a few small changes, turn any character into a "Changeling" and let normal prejudice's do the rest of the dirty work.

Actually, the most evil fleshsculptor was my flesh sculptor changling that I used as a villian. He made himself a living castle out of the local village people ;)

Ther two types of Magic O.C.C,s the Magic O.C.C that have Special abilities but used only Invocations spells and the other type who gets ther own specific spells.

I say go with a O.C.C with ther own spells.

Maybe some one can make a list of O.C.C,s that get ther own spells.

I suggest a Cursebringer OCC from Rifter 7 (I think). It's a necromancer varient that specializes in not only casting curses, but detecting and removing them as well (this is important if you use any of the adventures in the books). Plus this OCC is capable of having a good alignment. The only problem is that you'll have to change some skills and equipment to stuff in PFRPG because the OCC was made with Rifts in mind.

Any of the magic OCC's from that Rifter would be good, dangerous choices, since each one worships one of the four horseman of the apocalypse. The threat of bringing the horseman to Palladium would be a huge deal.

I say that you choose Stone Master.

That way, you can sleep in a Magic Pyramid, (potentially) live forever, and THEN study other forms of Magic for all eternity.
Although to see it from the way Kevin writes up Magic Using NPCs, even after an eternity of mystic study you'll STILL be only at Level 20. .
