For me the dino-hunter is much more appealing. A well educated character who can kill anything from a mile away would be more respectable as a NPC than a vicious muscle-man. Of course, that's for me, and strongly depends on your style of play.

Another advantage for the dino hunter is if he's sniping, he's a support role. It allows the PCs to be in the thick of things without needing to share the limelight.

I like them both, but neither should be able to show up the main characters. I would definitely make them 1st or 2nd level so they are just support characters and never outshine the PCs. The Bot Slammer is certainly more likely to add to the drama of the game.
Also, why do you need the group to have an NPC with them? Is there a certain skill set they are lacking? Or are they there to spur on some trouble?

Sounds like the Dino-Hunter in my game The players love him.
When it comes down to this kind of thing I usually just pick both. I hate choosing between ideas so I go for 'em both.
The sniper would provide nice long range support for the players and allow them to do most of the work and really shine. However if the opposition is going to be heavy they might prefer the added firepower of the bot-slammer.
I say have both and just stir up some drama between the two NPCs
