Pre-Death/Crash

Unread post by Yendor »

Follow up to the "What's your AtB campaign like" question I psoted earlier.

Considering the technology scraps left over (EGGs, matter/anti-matter power source in Mutants of the Yucutan, SAECSAN gauss rifle, Anti-Metal Virus from Down Under, etc.), what is your Pre-Death society like? Is it as high tech as the Golden Age (of Rifts/Chaos Earth)? Or has it never come up before in your games?

Macksting covered things quite well, but I'll just add my 2 cents:

In the field of energy weapons, small-scale robotics, artificial intelligence and aerospace the pre-Flash world seems to be on par with pre-Flash RIFTS. In other aspects, such as genetics, conventional firearms, psionic engineering, mecha and bio-warfare they don't seem as advanced.

I think the main distinction is one of quantity, not quality. In RIFTS, a lot of the technology survived in huge quantities or was quickly reconstituted. In After the Bomb, almost all of it was lost and very little was recovered. Hence the tech level is much lower, more post-apocalyptic, in AtB, though the occasional finds (Phantom II, GEOS-8) are as sophisticated as anything in RIFTS.
