Have him come flying in from off screen feet first kicking a PC in the face.

Oh wait that's a dynamic entry not a dramatic entry.
Never mind.

So this guy is kind of like a Hidden Cyborg from Rifts Bionics, but without the human brain? If the PCs are traveling through Dinosaur Swamp, then he could show up in the nick of time to save them from something with big teeth." Come with me if you want to live!" Why let them know at all, unless he sacrifices himself to stop the bad guy, and when his twisted metal remains are pulled from the wreckage, that he was not truly alive, but in true SF fashion, possessed a soul nonetheless.
Have you ever been thrown out of a Rifts game for being smarter than the Game Master?

there is probably no need to introduce him wityh a gaudy display of skill or power.

Just dress him like a merc and have him follow the PC's discretely. they will notice him, and will probably investigate. He can introduce himself then and there.

Play it cool, and the PC's should be able to allow him to 'tag along'. then he can proove himself capable.

and then let him do somthing odd to reveal his origins. walk through tear gas. resist magic (paralysis or fear for instance) or whatever.

Just keep it cool and as much on the down low. This is the PC's show after all.

Just remember that he is an NPC. Not the GM's PC in the game. The bot should not overshadow the PCs and should not become their crutch either. Emphasize the bot's own agenda and personality over his combat prowess...except when needed.

Yay. and that's a big hgh five for spinachcat.

There is no need to make him some indespensible Gary Sue type character. railroading a player's attachment is very much the wrong way to go on this one. Go subtle and honest and the players get to stay the real heroes. I'd make him indespensible, but not at all very powerfull (perhaps he can expertly disable WMD's, and hold his own in a fight, but needs numbers to actually get there)
