A Survivor's Journal...

You are on your own. The Army is MIA and our government is gone! There are no communications of any kind. Cities and towns have gone dark, and zombies fill the streets. The dead have risen and it would seem to be the end of the world. Help me, Mommy!

Awesome story so far! :ok: Maybe they could signal the other survivor with a flashlight or lamp with morse code; as per one of my recent posts in "Survival: More than just hoarding ammunition" thread. Just a suggestion. :D

Adam is taking a supply team out today if the horde isn't too bad. He knows I need magnets, and pretty big ones at that, so he's going to see about making a stop at a hardware store. He also wants to hit a gas station and see about filling up some of the tanks. I told him that stopping at more than one place may be too dangerous. He says he can handle it. I hope he's right...

As an auto mechanic I can tell you where to find magnets on a typical automobile. All modern ABS systems use magnetic sensors to tell the computer the RPM of each wheel. Magnet size varies depending on the make and model. Each sensor is located on the hub near the axle. Also there is a fair sized magnet attached to the inside of the differential cover and sometimes inside the transmission cover to pick up loose metal filings. Windshield wiper motors will also have magnets in them. Alternators do not have magnets in them. They require a small amount of power from the cars battery for them to function. Unfortunately, alternators need very high RPM to produce any usable power. They would have to use pulleys or gears to increase the RPM to a usable level. They could find magnets in other appliances too. Almost all refrigerators have a magnetic strip in the seal around the door, it keeps the door closed tight. Your character wouldn't know most of this though.

Great story by the way. Keep it up. :D

How did I determine who lived and died? Well, Corey is lucky - the dice like him. Everyone else, not so much. I am literally attempting to let dice rolls determine what happens and when. While Corey seems to be lucky enough to stay alive, everyone around him isn't as lucky. Or, well, very UNlucky around him.

Very interesting and inventive! And here i thought that the women were just getting unlucky (no dice involved) with the way things were going.

Was going to mention that the people there were going to have a big problem if the women kept getting killed. ;)

Great technique and of course great story! :ok:

Seeing as how your main character is pretty smart and creative (making the fans for power and trying to use the eject mechanism as a gun) I hope he thinks of driving a vehicle onto the ferry if they decide to go to this island. After all no cops are going to be there to say no
Then they will have the only car(s) on the island.

You're too forgiving. That's what he gets for trying to be so slick. Bad enough he left the door open, it's a miracle he didn't kill the survivors with his stunt! I feel he's getting what he deserved for being so high-and-mighty-know-it-allish. Karma's a you know what and as they say, what goes around comes around. ;)

Hopefully he'll be on the verge of starvation desperation and do something else dumb.

Yes, he made mistakes, but he is now a rare breed. A living human. You'd hope that we haven't gone that far. If we did, than I'd have to say that the human race is lost for the time being. We'll have to wait until we rise again after this crisis.

I don't know if he's going to get the chance to off himself or not. Remember that I am using completely random dice rolls to determine the major elements of the story. He wants to kill himself, but we'll have to wait and see if he gets the chance or not.

I havn't forgotten. It's just that the way things have gone for him and the way he's acted, i just want his demise to not be self inflicted easily. (i.e him shooting himself)

Leon Kennedy wrote:I apologize for not posting yesterday - I wasn't feeling well. I am also working on something interesting that I'm going to post for Heroes Unlimited, so stay tuned for that.

Anyhow, I have a double entry today. The first post is from Corey, and the second is from Adam. And they are both happening around the same time, so you get to see the perspective of both characters for the same event.

Journal Entry - Corey

Adam is still missing. We don't know what has become of him, but we're pretty sure that he has to be dead. He didn't die on the grounds - we'd see the blood and the corpse if he had. If he made it out of here, good for him. We're all still ticked that he left in the middle of the night, and we're irritated that he left the front door open. But he apparently had to do what he had to do. I hope it was the right decision.

We were out on the roof last night looking out at the hordes, and it seems that they have found something across the street to keep them occupied. I don't know what it is, but I'm pretty sure it isn't anything important. There hasn't been any activity of late to explain why they are there - other than Adam's disappearance, that is - but they seem to be happy over there. Rich thinks that maybe Adam is trapped over there, but I asked him if that is so why hasn't Adam gotten to the roof yet? We can see that a door that leads from the roof into the building, so if he was there he surely would have gotten to the roof by now.

With the hordes occupied with something else, we've decided to make a break for it. We're going to try, as quietly as possible, to get us all in the bus and go for it. The bus should have enough gas for us to get at least out of town and into Door County where there isn't as much population, and from there head to Northport and Detroit Island. Hopefully this won't go too badly. If we have to, we'll lay down some cover fire to help us get into the bus.

We unfortunately won't be able to take many supplies with us. Guns, ammunition, a couple molotovs, and whatever we can carry with ease. It sucks that we are going to have to leave a bunch of stuff here, but once we get to Detroit Island we can start anew. There should be some shops there, plus whatever is on the other islands out there. We can potentially get our hands on some seeds to grow fruit and vegetable plants, and we should be able to find some bottled water to hold us over until we get some rain barrels set up.

Well, we're heading out soon. I'd better go make sure Lilly is up for this. I can only hope that she can hobble to the bus fast enough...

Journal Entry - Adam

They left me here to die! Yesterday afternoon I thought I heard the bus start up, and then I heard gunfire. I tried looking out through the barricade near the front door and through the shamblers, and I could see the bus starting to move away from the compound. I thought that maybe they were going on a supply run, but then I saw the girl on crutches clinging to the top of the bus. I screamed so loud for them not to leave me, but they couldn't hear me. And my screams just kept the hordes close to the door so I couldn't leave.

I did find access to the roof through a closet, but the door at the top of the stairs was locked. I did everything I could to force the door, but by the time I was able to finally get up there it was too late. They were gone. I could see the bus heading north towards Velp. But where are they going? Where could they be going that would be more secure than where they were? I jumped and screamed and fired a couple of shots from one of the guns, but they either didn't hear or didn't care. They were gone, and there was nothing I could do to get them to come back for me.

I know now that I am going to die here. With the others gone, and my being trapped in this store with no food or water, I know that the end is near. I think I am going to sit on the roof and pick off zombies until I get bored of that. At that point I think a .357 slug to the right temple should just about do it...

For those of you interested, Adam's demise was not the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The dice dictated that at the moment he was going to shoot himself the hordes broke through the barricade and into the gun store. His death can only be described as quick and completely painful. Unfortunately, he couldn't be with us today to post his own journal entry, so I had to tell you what happened. As for Corey...

  ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!

Leon Kennedy wrote:I unfortunately have some extremely bad news. It seems as though the dice have decided that Corey hasn't had enough danger recently. A brief synopsis of what has happened, and why he hasn't had a journal entry in a few days:

Corey, Rich, and Doug decided to take the ferry around the larger island to gauge the extent of the infection, and to see if there was a possibility of picking off some of the zombies from the water. They also want to use this technique to thin out the number of zombies so they can make supply runs. They got half way around the island, and when they got to the far western side the boat's anchor deployed accidentally, caught on some rock on the bottom of the lake, and tore itself right out of the boat (they weren't prepared to deploy the anchor, so when it went off they were travelling at the equivalent of 20 mph). Needless to say, the boat sank with Corey, Doug, and Rich on it.

There was really only one course of action at this point - swim to the large island. Detroit island is on the southern/southeastern side of Washington Island, and they were on the northwestern side of Washington Island. Not a good scenario as the zombies were attempting to follow the boat as they circled the island. They made it to shore only to be descended upon by a very large swarm of zombies. They were able to fight their way off the shore and make it into the island, but things only got worse.

Washington Island is, for all practical purposes, a town. Roads, houses, stores, even a school. Also means that people lived here, and they are now dead. Or, well, dead-ish. They got off the shore and stepped onto Little Lake Rd, which is a small, dead end (no pun intended) road that leads to the corner of Main Rd and Jackson Harbor Rd - the two largest roads (County W is Main Rd). Yeah, not a good scenario. They got chased south by some runners down Main Rd towards a few houses and some stores, and Doug was overtaken. It wasn't pretty - he was completely eaten. I mean down to the bone, no flesh remaining.

Anyhow, Corey and Rich fled into one of the nearby houses and were able to secure the doors and windows on the main level for the time being. There is a swarm of zombies (maybe 100 or so) just outside the house, and they are attempting to get in. Corey and Rich have gone upstairs to the bedrooms in the house, and have moved every piece of furniture they can think of in front of the master bedroom door. At this point, they are trapped.

The worst part of this is that even if they can get beyond the zombies surrounding the house, they are trapped on the island. The boat sank, and they have no way that they know of to get back to Detroit Island. I'm sure that there are some beach front properties that may have small boats, but for now they are pretty screwed.

I'll keep posting to let you know how things turn out, and Corey will continue his journal entries if/when he is able to get back to a safe spot.

Seems as though the dice were done being nice, huh?

I guess justice has a price after all eh? :ugh:

As much as I'd love to have Corey not be dead, I have to decline this request. He died. The dice determined everything that happened to him (from him hurting his foot to being rescued to his death), and I cannot take away what the dice have done.

That said, I may start a new story with new characters and see what the dice say this time around. But as far as Corey is concerned, may he rest in peace.

interesting writing exercise, though I think Corey's last moments deserved being told in story form like the rest of his journals. Maybe a lone survivor with a high-powered scope, or maybe one of the other survivors writes his last journal entry, filling in how he imagines Corey met his maker.

Well there was that teen aged girl on the crutches. She could always continue the story.
"Your Grace," she said, "I have only one question. Do you wish this man crippled or dead?"

"My Lady," the protector of Grayson told his Champion, "I do not wish him to leave this chamber alive."

"As you will it, your Grace."

And she can always cover her own past by her thoughts yas you write them down for her. That way you can still keep on plugging away on your overall storyline. And you could fuill in parts of her past thru dreams that she writes in her journal.
