Lego Spider Skull Walker

Sure, I don't post nearly as often as I used to, (senior year is one rough mo' fo', let me tell ya), but that doesn't mean I'm not thinking of you guys now and then. Nor does it mean I'm not putting in a half hour here and there on my various projects. Case in point, my Lego Coalition SSW. I've been tinkering at this one for over a year now, but things really started to fall together well over the past eight weeks. The biggest problem was trying to figure out how to make a large curved surface out of rectangular bricks. After that major hurdle, the rest was comparatively easy. Is it perfect? Hell no! But I'm pretty proud of this one just the same.

Check it out, and if you like what you see, or even if you don't, leave a comment in the sidebar. :)

nice
I remember days like this when my father took me to the forest and we ate wild blueberries. More than 20 years ago. I was just a boy of four or five. The leaves were so dark and green then. The grass smelled sweet with the spring wind...For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm.

If Lego was selling this I would be buying one, even at their obscenely high prices. Well done :ok:

It was cool. I though of doing some Rifts Lego building myself but my Legos are being already use. I once builded a transforming jet fighter like the Valkyrie from Robotech Macross. I still have a fighter that has a guardian mode it call AI Cheat Aerospace Fighter. The site for LEGOs is http://www.LEGO.com if you want to build more Rifts stuff.

i again offer my LDD files for the SAMAS

my Glitterboy is in need of an overhaul since it's too small (might be able to pass this off as a sidekick suit if i built up the backpack a bit...)
and my Skycycle and Sampson PA didn't turn out very good...

i need to see about building an articulated body for the GB and Sampson. i don't think a minifig could fit inside if i tried though...

i also have a Flying titan suit using a "cut down" SAMAS backpack, but i need to take pictures of that one...

I'm glad someone noticed! :) Yes, I included a toilet on the upper deck for those long trips. And no, it's not "handicap accessible", especially since one has to climb a ladder to get to it. I tossed in the grab-bars because it is inside of robot that scurries along at 80mph over varying terrain and might come under jarring attack at any moment. When one's doing his or her "business", under such circumstances, something to grab onto would be greatly appreciated, (or so my reasoning went when I added the bars).

Actually I came up with a similar but more streamlined version made possible due to some new parts that I plan on making use of in my forthcoming Lego Death's Head Transport. It's a backpack-like accessory for the dude that has two studs on the back that short wing bricks can be attached to, though I'm still working on the positioning of engines' placement.

That said, I still might swipe you Sam, tweak it a wee bit, call it the Super Sam, (giving you full credit in the accompanying notes, of course... and if I forget, give me a reminder in a tactful PM so I can give credit where credit is due). However, since it will probably be part of the Lego DTH, it will be at least a year before that happens.

Those are all very cool! Very nice! Can't wait to see that Death's head transport! And that tank is very cool. How did they get the nice smooth armor on the front of the turret? Are they making kits for the M1A2 Abrams?

I suggest you read the entire thread I linked to back in my first reply, and follow his link to where he has his photos. There's several pages of photos and some of the info on how he build the tank. Took him a couple of years, collecting the pieces and building it.

That makes two of us. I already started laying the ground work on it by placing the SSW, two Mk Vs, and two UAR-1 models onto a fresh map and laid out the scale-outline (as in "build inside of the box"). Got some good ideas on the internal layout and everything. The good news is that the Lego DTH will actually be to the right scale size with room for the five vehicles and its 171 occupants (standard complement)! The bad news is that, unfortunately, I quickly ran headlong into the software's size limits even at that early stage! So the DTH is a no-go using Lego Digital Designer. Looks like it's time to step up to what the pros use; MLCad and LDraw. I already contacted the software's programmer and he told me that no such limits exist in MLCad that he's aware of. The only limits are what my computer can handle. And after doing a little research, it looks like I'll be able to import my LDD model in to MLCad with just a few minor tweaks and filling in some parts that won't come along, but it is doable. The only reason why I haven't gone to MLCad and LDraw before is because I've read that they're a bit of a b**** to install, and if installed wrong, they can mess up your computer. Consequently, I don't plan on even attempting to get the software installed for a month or more longer, when Summer break comes around from school when I can afford to be without my computer for a bit should things go wrong and upgrade my hardware if need be.

So I'm glad you guys are happy with the Spider Skull, because the DTH's build is going to be a couple years in coming... but it will be soooooooooo worth the wait.

duck-foot wrote:dude that is freakin sweet. how long did that take to do

About a year. But once once I found the right "feel" for its shape, 95% of the SSW build went together in about 8 weeks.

FYI (for those of you who might be wondering): The new software, MLCad, is a b**** to work with. Sure, I'm going to be able to put together some better looking Lego Dudes to populate my models with, but for what I have in mind it's going to be an uphill battle go get all the curves and moving parts to work right in the DHT. And if that weren't bad enough, I might be required to completely redo my Mark V and Spider Skull due to fact that many of the parts that I'll be trying to import in LDD simply don't exist in MLCad. I already planed on working a re-do on the Enforcer to get it down to a better scale for this project, but I was really hoping to just export the other two and do a minor patch job for any missing parts, (time will tell on that front).

Anyhoo, I'm about a third of the way through the 400 page tutorial/instruction book I bought to learn how to work MLCad ... and frankly I wish that Lego Digital Designer was up to the task because it would be sooooooooooo much easier. I have my plan on paper, but getting even a decent frame of the DHT going by Fall is going a lot of work. :bandit:

On the Lego Spider-Skull Walker, what's the build price according to the LDD software?
I've played with the LDD on my girlfriend's comp some, trying to make a transforming lego Optimus Prime, got the torso, head (not just like Prime's more like a generic dollar store head, sadly), and arms done (need to rework the arms though as the upper arms can't move up and down) and my model says it'd be 50 bucks already.
I'm guessing that spider skull walker is at least a $250 to $300 estimate? Maybe more?

Sadly the "Check Price" button is dark and non-functional. Probably because I used some parts that I knew from the onset were not available from their store. Shame. I kind of would would have liked to know that myself. All I know is that it's really BIG.

Give it a few years. Maybe some of those parts will be able to be customized for custom kits.

All the parts from the LDD software are Lego parts that are available in some kits or others. It's just that there's three product groupings:
Factory: This is the default Lego kit. Has the simple bricks and a few of the specialty ones and a small assortment of Technic bits. Plus all the little household item ones.
Creator: This is the one with all the funky angled pieces with the slots and weird flanges and hinges and whatnot. Basically all the special Technic bits.
Mindstorm: The robot stuff

You can mix pieces from any of the kits, but the check price and order feature only supports Factory pieces. So if you gotta use a Creator or Mindstorm bit, that button is greyed out :(

Now that stinks! Too bad the thought of being able to see some of these things in reality would be awesome!

Duke, maybe. But I wont' be able to accept the title of King till I finally finish my full manned and fully loaded 1:40 scale Lego DHT. Then, maybe.

Hey, that wouldn't be a bad add-on to my sidebar sig comments; "Duke of CS Lego Creations" :)
Edit: Nope. The new 125-character limit won't allow it, meaning I'd have to sacrifice nearly all the other ones I made up for myself to be in compliance. Shame. I kind of liked that one.

That's "Lego Dude" scale, what I've been doing all along, (with the exception of that CSS Chi-Town ship I did). Average male height is about 5'10"/178cm and a Lego minifig stands 44mm, making it close enough to call 1:40 scale. I figure my DHT will be about 7 feet 6 inches long and be made up of over 50,000 bricks... which is why I expect it to take so long to do and why I'm spending so much time getting my preparations right with the software. I'd like to get as much as I can right on the first try, accepting a few revisions and modifications along they way.

Necro-post.

But also the first time I have seen it. Very cool. Any possibility that LEGO Digital Designer will support these now and allow ordering of the correct lego blocks to build one of these?

Not a chance. Too many bricks not in their current "available for sale" inventory. In fact, while adding the SSW and Mk5 to the setting for the DHT-build, I had to modify them due to the "disappearing brick syndrome" where discontinued parts had to be replaced with similar substitutes because the software wouldn't render the old ones. About a quarter of the bricks available for the software aren't available in the Lego online store.

I'm estimating it would cost me $300 in parts alone. Legos ain't cheap, especially when you need specific parts instead of making due with what you have on hand.
