The Walking Dead

You are on your own. The Army is MIA and our government is gone! There are no communications of any kind. Cities and towns have gone dark, and zombies fill the streets. The dead have risen and it would seem to be the end of the world. Help me, Mommy!

The Walking Dead

Unread post by LostOne »

Been reading this comic (borrowed from a friend) and it has me itching to play a zombie RPG now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead

I have never seen a copy of Dead Reign. What are the zombies in this game like? Are they the slow stupid kind or the fast clever kind? Some of each?

The game has both the classic "shuffling" zeds and the "28 Days" runners, as well as a few "Land of the Dead" thinkers. There are a few others, but I won't give everything away! All in all the book does a nice job of covering all the bases with the Zeds. Also take a look at Rifter 40, there is a very nice "advanced" thinker in there as well.

And "The Walking Dead" ROCKS.. it's the best Zed fiction I've read in a long time.

I'll have to see if I can get ahold of Rifter 40 then. Thanks!

I agree. In fact I'm usually not big on the zombie genre, only started reading The Walking Dead because I had 3 people at work (including my boss) all saying it was a good read and then the boss dropped the first volume (size of a phone book) on my desk. Since we all discuss comics fairly often, I've learned to trust their recommendations. :) One of the guys gets single issues rather than waiting for trades, so I'm up to current. It's a chore waiting for the new issue each month.

Rick is a badass.

Rifter 40 had the original "teaser" for the game, and had a very specific background and antagonists- the final book changed that drastically. I tend to like the original premise but thats personal preference- rifter 40 made the Thinkers VERY dangerous foes. Rifter 45 (I think) has some more background on the original setting and some non-zed monsters, makes for a very nice changeup to throw at your players.

I've always said that the true horror of a zombie story comes not from the Zeds themselves but from what humanity sinks to as a result, and "The Walking Dead" nails that perfectly- some of the story arcs in the prison nearly made me forget there were Zeds!! Rick is a Badass.. but you can see him slowly being broken down by events.. he's getting dangerous- and that makes for a great character!

Exactly. The Walking Dead really captures the psychological problems with losing so many friends and family and the constant horrors they face. I wouldn't have lasted nearly that long, myself.

I hope to inflict that kind of emotional scarring on my players.
