Those are some good questions, though some of what you are asking has been discussed at length in previous threads on the Nightbane Forum (where this needs to be moved).

I'll have to do some thinking about it and consult some sources before I give you my answers, though.

aaaand? what's your say? :D

btw, "all nightbane are orphans" doesnt seem to be canon (anymore - if it ever was).

While the NB main book uses the word orphan, then correct term would be 'foundling' because each NB child is found somewhere.

As to the why, due to the talks the author gave after it was published we find out that the NB are suppose to be wraiths of the formless ones taking physical form, and that they are discovered in places where they will get found. They are found as toddlers or young children.

this was all before the NBSG came along and apparently changed things.

Tempus, don't feel bad about not getting the organization of the boards right off the bat. Most of us made similar mistakes when we were first arriving here. :)

Anyway, some points of clarification:

#1) I do not, in fact, have fleas (my heckler needs some new material, BTW).

#2) If I DID have fleas, then I guess they would be considered war-fleas... You might think of them like the circuses from the old cartoons, but they would have a boot camp instead.

#3) Nighbane stopped being orphans when Kev decided that this was the way he wanted it to be. I was told when I started working on the NBSG, Irvin and I then dropped hints in our submissions for the Rifter Swimsuit editions (and on these boards), and finally the NBSG made it "official canon."

#4) Not to sound like a jerk, but I do want to make clear that Mr. Carella's intentions for Nightbane don't have much bearing on the material beyond the inspiration it gives the new writers (myself included). Whatever C.J. posted on these boards or anywhere other than in the published books is NOT canon and has little to no effect on the direction the line is now going.

That said, I respect the heck out of Mr. Carella's premise. The world he helped create was awesome enough to make me want to help resurrect it and put it "back on the map." I'm sincerely sorry if this rubs any of the original fans the wrong way, but Kevin, Irvin, and I (not to mention anyone else that Kev might approve) are going to do our best to make Nightbane deeper and more expansive after our own tastes while trying to stay as faithful as possible to (while not getting mired in) the original material.

Again, I'm sorry if this isn't to anyone in particular's liking, but you should remember that just because we might not be using Carella's original premise word-for-word doesn't stop you from doing so in your own games if you so choose.

#5) The Q&A in Rifter #48 (was meant for the NBSG, but there wasn't room) actually answers all but one of Tempus's original questions. The one that I was debating was the question of drug effects, which is a bit tricky. I haven't been able to speak with Irvin about this to give a thorough answer, but my take is that it depends on the drug. I'll have to get back to you on the specifics, though.

That is why I said what I did the way I did.
I'm currently of two minds about changing the wraith premise, to the race premise.

But its not as bad as the farce the DC conversions had for NB, that take the cake. The only thing that was worse was the R-China books.

Who was the first person who claimed that CJ said that? The first person I saw was a known liar so never put much trust in it.

And that's fine by me, I just wanted to make sure things were clear for those that might be new and/or a bit confused. As far as a "race" premise, that's just one of the theories... :D

kargenetic wrote:So, I don't have NBSG yet, nor Rifter 48. What should we take to be canon and what is not?

Whatever is printed in the sourcebooks or as "official source material" in the Rifters (like the Q&A that is in #48) is official canon, even if it is optional canon. Another good rule of thumb is that if two pieces of canon contradict one another, the newest canon supersedes the old material (like with Nightbane not being orphans).

kargenetic wrote:Is this answered specifically, or will we just have to figure it out ourselves?

What exactly are you wanting to know is answered or not?

kargenetic wrote:Moreover, will the Nightbane core book be corrected in the next printing (whenever that is)?

That I am unsure of. Only someone like Alex, Kevin, or Wayne could say for sure...
