Idea for a New Setting, Would Like Feedback

Unread post by Gazirra »

Alright, I was thinking over the weekend about designing a Heroes Unlimited game, then I had a flash of inspiration. This flash was about a pocket dimension called a "Null-Time" (borrowed it from TDTMNT ;) ). I had an idea for the PCs to be Supers from any time in human history, past or future (up to the Third Millenial Barrier, also from TDTMNT). They would awaken to find themselves in one of these "Null-Times", this one with the form of a farm from the early 20th Century, but with some high-tech devices here and there in various states of repair. The "farm" would be ran by an old woman who calls herself Cecilia. She calls them down to dinner (each PC has their own bedroom), and it's an old-fashioned country-style dinner with mashed potatoes, roast beef, fried chicken, corn on the cob, etc. Anywho, it would eventually turn out the PCs were slated to die in each of their various time periods, and they ended up at the farm, perfectly healthy and intact.
They would somehow find out that something keeps destroying the various alternate realities within a small collection of parallel universes, and when each is destroyed, or a major temporal event occurs (like the extinction of the dinosaurs), a Null-Time is created. The PCs would be charged with finding and stopping whatever is causing the universes to disintegrate like they are. An idea I'm tossing around is a research company or a government is doing research on dimensional travel in the PCs' home timeline, using specially-treated mirrors that open paths to the other universes. When a mirror is destroyed, it causes feedback in its destination, eventually ending in its demise.
To enter a Null-Time, it requires a mishap when attempting form of time travel, whether to the past or future, or a parallel universe. They can also be accessed via dimensional portals, etc, but not through standard dimensional rifting (so no accidental "rifting" into one).
One of the Null-Time ideas I've had involves a civilization descended from theropod dinosaurs, called the Sugor, with a sole occupant: the Emperor (or Empress) of this society living out eternity alone, in a tragic figure kind of way. The Sugor would have been a Techno-Wizard society that also occasionally used magic similar to Atlantean Stone Magic. They would have found out about the meteor that would spell their doom, and calculated where it would crash on Earth. They tried to build a massive structure similar to a pyramid, but out of Quartz and Tourmaline, to create a way for the meteor to be dimensionally shifted so it wouldn't affect them. The Emporer would have been trying to focus the collective magic of thousands of Techno-Wizards into the crystals in order to cast the spell, but it went awry (do these things EVER work out in fiction?) and it created a Null-Time while wiping out the entire ecosystem of the Late Cretaceous.

I still have ALOT of writing to do, and this is the first day's work on it. I'd like some feedback, questions, or comments on it :)

I'm still trying to figure out what role Cecilia plays in all this :)
I'd like her farm to kind of be a home away from home, but having her as the villain could be cool :)

Hmmm, my hunch is that Celecia and the Empress are the same character. Well, it was just a hunch.

Back to the point of the thread, the game could be good. It's a little abstract for my tastes, like the first Secret Wars saga from Marvel Comics. It could be done well. Parallel universe stories like The One and the current story arc of Hammer of the Forge are very entertaining. The mysterious country farm is actually an excellent hook. If you will be using both time travel and parallel universes in the same adventure, I worry that the story might become muddled and unclear.

One more thing -- I don't like the idea that a universe can be destroyed simply by breaking a mirror. If it were that easy, then it would be infeasible for any universe to survive long enough for this story to take place.

Another idea for a "Null-Time", called "The Metropolis". It's basically a coastal city from sometime in the future that got hit with a nuke sometime in the next century. Most of the people died, except for a few thousand or maybe ten-thousand..... So far, I have they keep fed by converting several of the rooftops into hydroponic farms or something....
I'm also thinking of making Pompeii a Null-Time :)

Pompeii would be way more fun than a generic contemporary city.

I've decided to get rid of the alternate reality component, as I can't really see myself doing all that work! ^_^;;
