Simple Telepathy with "read surface thoughts" doesn't provoke a saving throw, unless he suspects the power is being used. If you have the time to bluff him, and get him to start thinking about his own True Name, then you should be able to pull it from his mind without the poor fellow ever knowing what you were doing.

Get another demon to tell it to you.
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.

You are playing a shifter. The truename is much more an in character choice. You are not a runesmith (or whatever the magic item creating wizards are called), nor are you a mage who controls automotons from the federation of magic book.

You can't compel a demon to tell you its true name with magic or psionics. Save for mind bond and that has its own risks. Now there are magic tomes out there that do have demon names, at least as a GM I would put that out there. If you are clever you could trick a demon to reveal its true name or the name of another demon if it knows one. That's harder than you might think.

You've been given a tall order to get into this guild. I'd summon a demon for help and go for the automaton. :demon:

Yikes! well it looks like we're being sent to Calgary for our next adventure so the chances of finding an automaton are slim...

how about the getting a demon to tell me another demons true name, if i threatened to kill it presumably it'd rather talk? or is there some unwritten rule of 'never tell anyones true name?

cheers for the suggestions so far!

Dimension Book Ten, Hades goes into a fair amount of detail regarding demon true names. Chances are if demon x knows demon y's true name then demon y is likely being black mailed or used by demon x. So demons don't even reveal their true name to other demons. Is there a chance that a demon knows another demons true name, sure. That's up to your GM.

Good luck in Calgary :ok:

Greetings and Salutations. With Carl's previous post about summoning a demon to help you steal the automaton, I'm suddenly reminded of the Jinn. Wish for the automaton. Who cares how he gets it or if people are going to come looking for it? You're not going to be holding onto it. That'll be the guild's problem. Mind you, don't tell the Jinn why you want it. Sorry, random thought. Nothing to see here. Move along. Thank you for your time and patience, please have a nice day. Farewell and safe journeys to all.

Offer a trade. The demon's true name in exchange for a HOSTESS FRUIT PIE! (c, pat., tm, pdq Hostess).

I've been having fond memories of childhood comics lately.
"Then one day, I was just walking down the street and I heard a voice behind me say, 'Reach for it Mister.', and I spun around and there I was face to face with a six-year-old kid.
Well, I just threw my guns down, walked away. Little bastard shot me in the ass.”

Might not Hypnotic Suggestion be an option? It doesn't count as either a probe or as mind control, and might be useful either to bring the name to the front of the demon's mind, or to suggest that revealing it in some way might be beneficial

As a GM I'd pretty much consider that an automatic save. Considering the power of revealing their true names has over them I would consider it akin to telling them to commit suicide.

Just my take on it, 50 exp for clever but futile :D

Can I get a ruling on whether or not Carl Gleba XP is like the Coalition credit, universally accepted? Might go a ways toward convincing my GM to accept it, especially since he loves your work.

Ruling: he's writing the Minion Wars so I'd say his XP is megaversally accepted!

Well if it's the demon army, all you might get is the first letter of the last name and the last four of their ssn...

This one's a piece of cake. Modeus' little black book contains the true names of all demons - just steal that! Problem solved.

Um, except it would deliberately brag about you be the one who stole it. WHich is ;why you shodu lbrag to it about "your " name(using a rivals name of course), and then insisti ti forget about you and then ask it to leave.

If your Shifter in a guild ask other Shifters to trade demon names, do research in their library and check out the big libraries in the big magic cities like Tolkeen, Lazlo, New Lazlo, the city of the Three and most importantly City of Brass as a vile place of evil with many demon living there.
