Force Fields - Normal or Natural AR

Unread post by Ninjafingers »

Just like the subject says. Are force fields considered normal or natural AR? I tried searching but came up with zilch. Thanks.

I would say it would depend on the force field in question. This is why I say that, if it was say from magic I would say yes Natural A.R. given that the caster is literally using the Natural forces of the universe to construct his shield. I,e Armor of Ithan in palladium fantasy having I believe a A.R. of 18.

Now say the NGR force field which requires a external power source I would classify as a Normal force field. given that no matter what the user of this type of force field wants once it is depleted of its external power source it is gone and requires a possible lengthy repair as the user of a Natural force field only has to channel his own innate powers and his is back up.

I hope that helps but that is how I work force fields in my games

Force fields are considered normal.

A natural AR is one where if you roll under it you do NO damage I.E Dragon

A normal AR is one where you roll under it it takes the damage, roll over it and the PC/NPC takes the damage. I.E Armor of Ithan or full plate ect.

Okay, we've got one vote for Natural and two for Normal (for the record I know the difference). Anyone have a book/page number to back up these claims? Personally, I think they would be considered Natural, but would like to know if there's an official ruling on the matter.

There isn't one.

I'd say force fields are natural. Roll under and they absorb the damage, roll over it and they get depleted by the damage. The person with said forcefiel should be fully protected until the field is depleted.
I am very opinionated. Yes I rub people the wrong way but at the end of the day I just enjoy good hard discussion and will gladly walk away agreeing to not agree :D

Force Fields don't normally have an AR. They just stop all damage from hitting the user/wearer, as a front line passive defense. So they effectively have a Nat AR of 4.
I do not remember any, besides the Energy field spell, FF listing an AR with it. Even with the EF spell, they are using such an old text for it they continually forget to edit their C&P to list the AR as Nat. AR. (Unless they corrected this in RUE.)

CB1 pg. 32 states that force energy fields have 19-20 AR and can be destroyed when their SDC are used up. So for me that's normal armor, isn't it?

What you stated was in the "Cate the Mega-Damage System? Here's how to change it to S.D.C." section of the RCB1, in the "The Armor Rating of Monsters and Magic..." sub-section. When you state something like this you need to state What section you took it from.

Also, the paragraph you pull the info from specifically said what the paragraph was about magic and Psi FF.

Another thing, the section says that they generally give a normal AR of 19-20, this means that the AR 19-20 is a guideline for those MDC armor spells and Psi-powers that do not already have a AR in the SDC versions of those spells and psi-powers that can be found in the game books of the SDC settings.

These are things you should of posted with your original post.
