Remember the Terror Bears?

Unread post by allmarduk »

Remember the Terror Bears from the old Teeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG? They had a psionic power called "mind trap" which they used to force victims to relive bad memories or have nightmares.

Pain Bear: had a picture of a human skull with a branch with thorns sticking out of it on his chest.

Fear Bear: had a picture of a booing ghost that, as with Fear Bear, was on his chest.

Doom Bear: his chest had a picture of a nuclear explosion. Presumably afraid of nuclear weapons.

Nightmare Bear: like Fear Bear had a picture of a ghost on his chest, except it was darker in color and this ghost was meaner-looking.

The Terror Bears were an obvious parody of the Care Bears. That's why I personally liked them.

I was thinking of redeveloping them for AtB as the "Four Bears of the Apocalypse". Adult bears with more powerful Mind Trap powers to make them major threats in the game.

Have you seen the Terror Bears adventure in the TMNT adventures supplement?

They had already been given slightly more advanced psionic powers, and the adventure expanded on Doom Bear's conviction that nuclear war was going to destroy the world. It hinted at the possibility that they could start the war that eventually results in the world we call 'After the Bomb'. If somebody could expand on that, it would definitely be cool.

Actually, one of the possible outcomes of that adventure was the trigger for First Edition AtB.

I had one adventure outlined for AtB where a Sammy (Doom Bear), the sole survivor of the Terror Bears, had lost (repressed) his memories and is living life as a wandering hermit, but where ever he goes people are drawn into his Mind Trap (which Sammy has no conscious control) and have to live through the war and experience the death of the other bears. Sammy's years of inner torment changed his psionic powers: Like Buzzy, he could now trap more than one mind at a time; his Mind Trap fantasy is so detailed that victims are -10 to save vs the illusion; has gained Empathic Transfer and can force feed emotions (despair, fear, sadness, etc) to his victims; and like Archie, the mental grip is so strong that the victim (30%) may end up trapped in the fantasy for 1D4+2 months and have to save vs insanity or be permanently haunted by the fantasy.

Tales of an epidemic of madness have reached the group and they are tasked to find out what is causing it. Eventually they would make the connection with the wandering bear, track him down and find him in the company of the Cult Bears (see A Journey to Boar's Town adventure) who are trying to help him. The question then is what to do with him once they find him.

The Cult Bears would insist that they not kill him, and suggest that the only cure Sammy would be within his fantasy world. The group would then, of course, have to enter into Sammy's Mind Trap where they would experience the horrible fantasy of the Crash, the Big Death, and the death of the other three bears. I never got around to figuring out how the fantasy would end, but figured that it might entail catching Sammy is another Mind Trap (assisted by the Cult Bears?) where he would be confronted with the truth.

It would probably make a better short story than an adventure, but there you go.

Um, yeah, that's what I said.

Brilliant! I really love that idea. I may have to steal it. It could even give the players a chance to see 'first hand' the cataclysm that created the world they live in. I reckon you could stretch a whole campaign where the players find themselves in the time of the Crash, not knowing how they got there, only to find it was 'all a dream' courtesy of Doom Bear. I can't decide whether the players will love or hate that!

The concept of the Terror Bears is great, but they will really test the resolve of a GM and his/her players.

I hate it when my mind wonders,
Because I have no idea what it will bring back with it.
