Any of those classes would fit, and I love the concept of this NPC and his potential.

The concept is just cool!
Personally, I like the Fire & Brimstone Preacher option best! He isn't a frontline combatant and is smart enough to know it, so he hires the PC's to exact justice where he cannot. This works especially well if the NPC (of any OCC) cannot go adventuring due to a permanent injury (crippled or missing limb, lungs that were exposed to harsh treatment do not work well...)In any case a Preacher might reject bionic/cybernetic treatment as "not natural" or "not part of the Almighty's Plan for me"!

Paying in gold works well, as the best gold mines in NA are in the West, so this just makes sense.

You know, this sounds so good, you should expect other GM's to steal the idea, at least the general Local hires PC's to retrieve fallen Heroes and Avenge their deaths idea-if not the specifics! But that may happen too!!!

All in all, this is a neat idea!
