free resurection
I remember reading somewhere that a caster of a spell can cancel the effects at any time. and this lead me to think that if someone was killed by a spell, then the caster could simply cancel the spell and the victim would be back to the way he was before the casting of the spell.
am I way off in left field or do y'all think I'm on to something.

no, dead by damage is dead, no matter how that damage was caused.

I agree with drewkitty dead is dead. I don't think you can undo the effects of a fireball

Re: free resurection
The effects have ALREADY finished (ie the fireball is gone) so there is nothing to cancel.
Good try though.

I don't see how cancelling a spell that kills someone would resurrect them if cancelled. Cancel stops not reverses the effects of a spell, that's the definition of 'cancel'.

Going, going, GONE!!
Of course if you like, your mage can try and cancel the fireball while en route to it's target. Not resurrection, but it does keep the target alive.

AFAIK, you can only cancel magic that has a duration that is not permanent or intant.

When the damage is down, the spell can not be canceled - so no resurrection.
