Magic Net vs. Size

Unread post by Prysus »

Greetings and Salutations. Hmm ... a magic net can ensnare everything within a 10 foot area ... what if it's used on something like a dragon that takes up more than a 10 foot area? Dragon is ensnared (if it doesn't dodge) by default of the spell or the spell is ineffective due to the size of the target?

For note, this is only a question of curiosity. It's never come up with my games, but someone posted a random question (a "who would win" type question) and my mind ended up taking the question to various conclusions leading to the above. This is a mere matter of curiosity and to see what other people think. Discuss!

Thank you for your time and patience, please have a nice day. Farewell and safe journeys for now.

If the dragon was full sized, I would say no because the spell reads 1-6 human sized targets, w/ that being said if the dragon was less than full sized, ie. in order to move in a dungeon, had metamorphosed into something smaller, I would allow it.

If it's bigger than the affected area then it doesn't work, or at least that's been my logic.

Sorry but the magic net just won't work on something that big. It's the same principle as the Immobilize spell used against a ship. It's just too big for the spell to be effective

IMHO, it the magic net spell caputures one individual regardless of it's size.

Per the description of the Spell, it does nothing more than cause a "ten-foot-area" section of Netting (presumably either a circle with a 10-ft diameter or a square ten feet on a side) to manifest in physical space. Nothing in the write-up says that the Magic Net ever gets any bigger OR smaller than the area described.

By its own wording, then, the Magic Net, cast upon a creature that occupies more space than the stated area, would only end up being draped over part of the creature in question.

(Nothing in the spell description says that it does anything besides ensnare the target, either, provided it can sufficiently cover the target; it's just a net composed of supernaturally strong fibers.)
