Mystic Portal cancellation.

Unread post by Armorlord »

"The creator of the magic can cancel/stop its effect or influence instantly at any time."
Mystic Portal in 'Pass through solid walls' mode creates a 12ft/level deep passageway through any substance.
Given the way these things tend to work, I ruled that being caught within such a passage in solid material has the same results as teleporting into solid material. Instant death for a whole person, or in this particular instance the portion of the character that was specifically in the passage (long story) becoming one with the material.
Character had enough speed to possibly get clear, and allowed the shimmer to be seen as a warning, so dodge had a chance. Put the number to beat at the caster's spell strength. Considered initiative, be that vs dodge seems clunky (and in this case would have gone worse).

So, Mystic Portal passageway cancellation vs dodge with target number being equal to spell strength, with result of possible instant death for most mortal characters. Thoughts? Agree, disagree, think I'm a big meanie for not mitigating the results more? I'll admit it seems harsh, but it makes sense given how that sort of thing gets treated in Palladium.

Given the name, I've always treated the portal as the normal use of the word 'Portal', in that you enter it and are instantly exiting it, even when used to travel through walls, like a form of teleportation. Meaning the only way to catch someone 'in' an object is if they are in the act of stepping through. I'd still allow this, but allow the target to Dodge, needing a 10 or better to go forward, or a 14 or more to go the way back again (allowing it to cut parties apart more easily).
Getting a mage to tell you where the hydra is...10,000 gold
Hiring a summoner... 40,000 gold
Hiring one hundred 10th level mercenaries... 98,567 gold
Giving a hydra skull to your necromancer... priceless

Indeed, but Mystic Portal has three 'modes' it can be cast in. One is the passageway from my example, another is a portal as in your example along with a sub-option for a one-way portal, and the third is outright teleportation. A regular swiss army knife of obstacle crossing fun.

I'm aware, but I still treat all through as though they where instant travel for simplicity sake.

I am sure that I have read in one of the PB's (not sure which one) that if you are in the "tunnel" of a mystic portal it just pushes you out the end of which ever side you're closer to. I could swear Ive read this as canon.

I would agree with this, soley based on Palladium's stance against insta-kills when it comes to powers, spells, psionics, ect.

Not to be augmentative, but where do you get that view on their stance?

Heck, I'll even be argumentative on it. Palladium's stance on insta-kills is the reason for my ruling on the matter.

Lots of places. Lack of really high damaging powers, when you do find such a power it'll have a range that nerfs it down or have an additional cost (IE: hit points or attribute loss), giant robot and starship weapons that should do way more damage than a Boom Gun but don't, city-busting nukes with a blast radius smaller than the ones used in real life, spells and psionics with a too high PPE/ISP cost for what it does, ect.

Look at the practical applications of non-damage spells and you'll see where they put them all. More so as written.

Rider wrote:Speaking of Insta-kills, this thread just made me think of one.

If you were a guy with the powers of Possess Others, Teleport, and Imbue Power, you could give someone your teleport power, possess them, then use the power and go into a wall, then have your mind snap back to your original body.

But that's pretty complicated and it's probably be faster to shoot them in that case...

Or you could just possess other, and use their sidearm to shoot themselves in the head.

Also, enjoying digging through year old posts?
