New Shifter Seeks Advice

Unread post by jarlaxle »

Ok lets start with the character i have a True Atlantean shifter with an Avian Biomech Familiar, I wear mage armor (magic enhanced, higher MDC) with no spells, My familiar has a camera eye to aid me in my writtings of my travels. I have in creased my PPE base with some TWB-1000 medallions.

What advice/tricks do you guys have for gaining supernatural minions? I do have a slick tongue i understand how demons think.

My plan is to bring some demons through and send them at my enemy, A force from the Nightlords.

I will make these nightlords appear to be claiming they are true demons(there by insulting the demon lords them selves.) Since it is not rifts earth my home dimension once my goal is gained they demons are free to do as they wish.

At the same time im using this to vault my power with in the player group. Thoughts? and tips are greatly welcomed

As I understand the process (having just started playing a shifter myself)

1. Contact your demon with a communication rift.
2. Attempt to win a battle of wills
3a. if you fail it may come through and attack you, if you win 1:1 fight with it you can bind it to a more severe pact than the battle of wills. If it wins supposedly they tend to leave you alive to consider your folly, (not sure why they would IC)
3b. successfully binding it to your will allows you to pull it through for the duration of your binding. (i.e. until you release it)
3c. Offering a contract during the battle of wills may affect the outcome (i.e. you promise it mayhem for obeying you for a short time it may improve your odds) (The RP aspect)

Repeat for each demon/dyval/entity to the limits allowed by your level (one lesser per level, a greater that counts as 2 lesser, etc) (This prevents you from outstripping your fellow players too quickly, one, two or even three Tri-fang(s) won't overpower a glitter boy) Eventually you can even the gap, I don't recommend trying to 'vault' your power within the group, holding your own works best. (Being evil you would rather be underestimated than overestimated if your 'friends' turn on you...)

Dyvals & demons don't mix. Find a theme for your critters & summon things that work well with your strategies.

Against the nightlords' minions you plan to send demons claiming to be true demons, or claiming the nightlords' minions are the demons? Assuming the nightlords minions are wiped out it is irrelevant as no report would get back for years (if then). As a mortal the dimension you are on is irrelevant, unlike a demon you don't "respawn" in rifts earth if you die. Unless you are saying you are leaving the dimension immediately afterward so setting the demons free doesn't bother you, if so that is true that they are unlikely to follow you, you can still summon them again though.

After that is where role-playing the encounter comes in. I suppose trickery plays a huge part (depending on the alignement of the shifter, yours sounds evil), as well as demonstrations of power, but only at the right moment.

I have never played a shifter (never appealed to me), but after having read the OCC, it does appear fun.

Are you attempting to bring in Nightlords or demons? I may be able to offer dome other options if I know the context of what you are attempting to do.

When i first started playing all accept out gm thought shifters were dumb. But then again that was the years of "whats the biggest armor i can stat with. We playe some whitewolf games for a bit as well gotta say those brought out the Roleplaying not rollplaying. With not many offensive spells i find my self stuck.

Having help is the Shifter's trick, so to say. Compensate the low amount of initial firepower with muiltiple creatures that can do your bidding is kind of cool.

Yeah problem is im looking at a big combat dont have much time for building anything but even just one would help. hell even a squad of demons for a mission and here demon lord keep their souls. (opefully not having to comit my self to anything.) but means i cant mess up either

My suggestion is Possessing Entities. Most PC's and NPC's are not geared to fight off possession and the entity cam wreak havoc from within your opponents ranks.

R:UE p124 paragraph B details what you can control with a battle of wills. Having more than this is asking for a revolution or worse...

Elementals are also VERY useful, especially if you need versatility and more important, do not like being tortured by something if you fail to beat it as they usually just leave.

This is where Shifters have it harder than Summoners. Summoners have specific circles to summon specific types (demons, devils, undead, even people), and we played once a typed was summoned, you could get it again, getting a sort of feel for them (so your first time summoning a demon you get a Alu, from then on you could summon that type of demon).

Shifter, from what is in RUE, seem to have to randomly poke about, until they get a plane they can summon something from, unless they already have been to or summoned something before, which is in our game an understood part of learning the class ability. The GM gives a amount of types of creatues you know how to summon at the start. Not sure of the system, but you also know of the dimension the being came from and can figure out more through trial and "error" and even simple questioning of the ones you can summon. And I am remined, the types are determined by alignment and backstory.

A Shifter's most important summoning tool is Lore: Demon & Monster. A competent Shifter should consult his knowledge for preventative aids. Just think of that guy in the 1st Mummy movie where he had an assortment of religious charms should he ever be in trouble.
