Real Businesses that may survive to the time of the Rifts

Unread post by dworldjumper »

With the possibility of a Rifts movie coming out can anyone think of any real life businesses that may last up to and including the time of the Rifts?
Just curious what yall think.

Heh. In my buddy's 'Rock 'n' Rifts' game, the CS was bought out by Wal-Mart. So deadboy armor was blue with a smiley face instead of a skull motif.

Well I won't argue with you that the Twinkie itself could last that long, except Tallahassee claimed they have a shelf life to them 8) , but didn't I read a little while ago that they filed for bankruptcy protection ?

on a side note, my GM always told us back in the day that the only pop to survive was Dr. Pepper and the only beer was Kokane (sp?) but I'm pretty sure that's something his group came up with as opposed to something canon.
Kind of reminds me of Demolition Man, "tonight we dine at.... Taco Bell!" lol

Right about Hostess having troubles...Perhaps they regain ground in the 'Golden Age'?
And Demolition Man....(shudder)...Taco Bell might have taken a PR loss with that blatant pluggola in that lousy movie....

As for corporations? Boeing, definitely; too big to fail. John Deere and Caterpillar, perhaps...a lot of the vehicles post-Rifts have the 'big wheel tractor' look to them.

The real business that would survive and make strides as independant businesses?

Tailors. That's right. Tailors. You can't walk around naked. The most powerful person in many communities would be the guy who makes your clothes. Already, this is a dying profession, but after the cataclysm?

"You can sew? And make me PANTS? YOU ARE MY HERO!"

Plumbers would also be big, as would carpenters.

If we're going old school, how about candle makers, blacksmiths, tanners (as in leather makers NOT the cast of Jersey Shore :nh: ). I mean not everyone is going to have access to flashlights, battery powered lanterns, etc. Hell how about good old fashioned hunters ? Take a look around you, how many people do you know that can A) successfully hunt/trap an animal and B) knows the correct method to bleed, skin, debone, etc. the successfully hunted animal. The the next step would be to try and preserve it. I know I could pack in it barrels of salt like they used to do it in the old days, smoke it, hang it to cure the meat, but not everyone else would. I only know to hang meat (sausages) in a cool place to cure it because my family liked making homemade Italian sausage but I don't really know how to hunt or prep then animal.

The Magic Guilds might consider pizza teleporting to be borderline profane, though...

And have you read the first three pages of Neil Stephanson's novel 'Snow Crash'? :D

Naaah...

It says the Ogapogo saved "as best they could", which is rather a bit different.

I think, Walmarts and many chain stores and retailers would not survive long because the stock would run out fast and they do not get their products locally,
Depends on how much their existing credit counts for and how well they can secure their depots. They could end up buying out all the moms and pops. But good point.

The Apex mountain area near Penticton even has multiple Uranium deposits and has been subject to proposed mines a number of times, but because it is a popular ski resort they have never gone thru.
This is the big one. The Midwest doesn't have uranium and the CS wouldn't've left Colorado alone so long in any sane timeline.

truthfully, if this valley really did survive almost intact because of the dragons, I would expect it would be a major power in the world of Rifts with many pre-rifts secrets and Tech. I would imagine dozens or more companies in this area (if they make it to 2098) would still be around come 109 PA.
The claim was hedged more than you're acting like, but that passage also referenced back to the British Columbia section and there was nothing there.

It's quite possible the passage was cut for a much larger section in a later book and they're just waiting for you and your insider knowledge to make some Rifter submissions.
