taalismn wrote:Mexico, Post-Rain of Death

”Damn it! Where are all you bastards coming from?! I thought most of the renegades bought it with Khyron!”
Rick Hunter threw his fighter across the sky to avoid the barrage of fire from the pack of Regults trying to haul him down. Then he had to duck back down as a trio of Gnerls, waiting above, swooped down on him and tried to catch him by surprise. He put his Valk into Gerwalk, sliding in VTOL under them as they screeched overhead, pickled off two of his remaining Stilletos into their hot venturis, then had to dive again as his hovering mecha caught the attention of the Regults again.
All around him squadrons of UNDF mecha clawed and scrambled in their own furballs with the Zentraedi mecha that were trying to hit Mexico City. It seemed like every remaining Malcontent mecha in North America was making a hallelujah end run on the city, their quantity, if not their quality, threatening to overwhelm the available defenders.
“Lisa?! Talk to me! ETA on reinforcements?”
#“Orbitals and transcontinentals are still 30 minutes out.”
“Damn! Khyron’s spoilsports are thick as flies out here and we can’t swat all of them by ourselves!” Rick frantically tried to spot the Gnerl that had tried to wax him earlier.
#“Got another IFF signal coming up on your position, Rick.”
“Who? Don’t tell me we got more rogues!”
#“No, IDs as Civil Air Patrol. Probably Mexican air national guard or militia.”
“Great! What the hell can THEY contribute? Jets?” Rick already knew every Mexican Sector VF was committed to the battle, and every conventional fighter that wasn’t already up was shot down. The skies were most definitely NOT friendly around here.
#”Registration reports it as a helicopter.”
“You’re kidding me! This isn’t a heli fight!” $#!+, there was the Gnerl, minus its two buddies, but with a fresh Gnerl dropping in beside it, both angling back towards him.
#”That’s what it says. It’s approaching your position QUICKLY, Rick.”
Rick glanced up at his HUD, to see a new cursor coming into the aerial battlefield.
<<Missile Alert! Tracking Incoming>>
Rick made ready to dodge and throw chaff. Most of the UNDF mecha had already lost their missiles early in the fight, which left the Malcontents with available ordnance.
<<Confirmed. Double Vampire. AAM Targeting Alpha-Zebra-One.>>
As Rick looked up, he saw the Gnerl suddenly get hit by a bright streak and blow up. A second streak hit its wingman, sending the Gnerl rolling and staggering wide as it tried to regain control.
Rick caught a glimpse of the launch aircraft as it entered visual range, banking after the wounded Zentraedi mecha.
What the -hell-? That looked like an old Bell 222! What the heck was it doing in this hairball?!
Then he was back in the furball, chugging away with his GU-11 as a Zentraedi Stinger tried to ream him with pulse laser fire.
Several times during the fight, as Rick tried to keep track of his fellow fighters, he caught a glimpse of the mysterious copter as it ducked and weaved in its own dogfights. The thing may have looked like an executive chopper, but it moved with a speed and fluidity that almost the equal of a Veritech. And it seemed to bristle with armaments.
Whatever it was, he saw it make a pass on a hand’s worth of Regults. By the time it had finished its flyby, half the battlepods were smoking ruins, shot through by what looked like chain gun fire and ASMs. Another time he caught a glimpse of it reversing on a pursuing Male Power Armor, then blowing the Zentraedi’s head off with a nearly point-blank Hellfire launch. He even saw it take a glancing hit from Regult cannon fire, the particle beam strike staggering the helicopter but not obliterating it as it should have; instead the chopper had turned and bullseyed the battlepod with what looked like laser fire of its own.
Suddenly aware of a new player, the Malcontents had begun to start moving towards the newcomer with fell intent, and Rick was back to fighting, picking off distracted targets of opportunity with his remaining chain gun ammo and few remaining missiles.
By that time, though, the radar had lit with dozens more signals, IFF painting them as the reinforcements from South America and Liberty, finally arriving. As the fresh forces inserted themselves into the firefight, depleted mecha and men began to drop out and fall back. Rick, fresh out of ammunition and missiles, was one of them, gratefully gaining altitude to assume an overwatch as the battle wound down in the defenders’ favor.
Thus Rick was able to see the dark angel bow out of the fight, lofting out of the fight, then accelerating away at an incredible performance curve, before its radar image sputtered out.
Rick looked at the clocked speed recorded before the black helicopter had vanished.
No ####ing way! That helicopter broke the sound barrier?! And sensors say that loss of sensor contact was...active stealth?!
What the hell was that thing?

Caitlin O'Shannessy, late of the Texas Highway Patrol, eased back on the stick as she lowered The Lady into the Lair, the cool shadows folding over stealth helicopter as the camouflage tarp retracted back into place above it, preserving the illusion of the Valley of the Gods being more lifeless waste.
Like so much of the Earth now, Caitlin sighed as she powered down The Lady and pulled off her helmet.
Aliens, giant robots, and the Apocalypse...certainly not what she’d been expecting to be facing one day when she’d gone chasing a mysterious black helicopter back in the day.
With a hiss the cockpit hatch opened, and Caitlin tiredly climbed out of her faithful stead.
“How’d it go?”
“Just swimmingly, Jo. Took a hit, but the armor held. Bless old Michael Briggs for those last tech handouts before the Firm got folded.”
Jo Santini was staring at the burn marks along her favorite bird’s flanks. “I can SEE that! Fortunately I got enough of the armor stock to effect repairs, but I’d rather you didn’t get hit!”
“I try, but it’s not like we’re pot-shooting Migs anymore. Those Zents are trigger-happy bastards.”Caitlin set her neural helmet, another gift of purloined technology from the late Firm director, on one of the drums of supplies packed into the Lair’s cave tunnels.
Jo was already prying at the melted and warped composite armor with a tool. “Anything else go cocked?”
“ Laser almost overheated. Gotta do something about the cooling jacket on it. Engines acted up again. Almost lost power a few times during the hairball.”
“I’m telling you, we should move to a metallic hydrogen powerplant; they give more power.”
“You know as well as I do LMH’s military mecha fuel and they’re watching where every drop goes! On the other hand, av-gas is cheap these days with the synthesis plants feeding the Reconstruction. Jo, av-gas is good enough for supersonic on The Lady without having to rebuild her guts.”
“We’re going to have to rebuild sometime. And you keep calling it The Lady.”
“Good enough for your Uncle Dom to call her that. Just keeping up the tradition.”
Both women fell silent for a moment as they remembered lost loved ones and missing friends, most lost in the Rain of Death, which the two women had only survived because they’d been huddled up in the Lair at the time, doing maintenance on the old Lady.
“We’ll also have to consider going legit some time. We can’t hide from the bandits, Malcontents, or the new government forever, especially if we need new parts and materials. Missiles and SLAP rounds cost on the market, and the new Southern Cross is sniffing around coming to catch Malcontents re-arming. ”
“I know, I know, but I’m hoping to establish our rep with the communties as a security contractor, what with the Firm being gone and most of the records of The Lady’s past actions probably decorating a glass-bottomed crater somewhere.”

Man, that takes me back. I was a little kid when I show that show. And I liked it too. Good job at combining them.

It was the era of the 'super vehicle'...super helicopters, super cars, super boats, super subs.. The age of extravagance.
Nowadays, even though we have the tech for far more sophisticated CGI, the most popular televison series are lawyers savaging each other.

in their defense, it wasn't all the scientists' idea.. they had originally set out to engineer an organic AI, but the mini-lop rabbit they wound up with blackmailed them into doing the cloning. said AI is currently MIA and considered extremely dangerous..

Why Scar Hates Crossover Universes....

It was rainy in Central City, and foggy, limiting visibility and making it hard to see.
Scar was alright with that...Having discarded conventions of honorable combat in his quest for revenge, he was satisfied with assassinating his targets(he couldn't call them 'victims') from behind. He was a realist after all, and some of those he hunted were formidable opponents. Better to stalk and destroy them from ambush, than to stupidly approach them openly.
Admittedly, though, this time he'd almost blundered into his targets in the oppressive damp of the accursed Amestrian capitol. He hadn't been LOOKING for a fight, but when opportunity presented itself, who was he to quibble? As far as he had fallen from his ideals, he was not about to complain if God presented him with an open and unsuspecting back.
When is why he was trailing four forms at the edge of visibility...One was small and red-clad, another hulking and moved with metallic heaviness, the third was tall and clad in blue, and had dark hair. The fourth was an unknown male with dark hair as well, and Scar thought he might have glimpsed glasses on the man's face. The smallest one seemed to be complaining nonstop.

Clearly he had found Edward and Alphonse Elric, and Roy Mustang. The fourth man might have been one of Mustang's lackies, perhaps the older man who Scar had heard referred to as Maes Hughes.

Scar might have paused in prusing this target...the odds were against him, what with TWO State Alchemists to contend with, but Scar began to mentally reason...If he struck hard and fast, he could kill the shorter Elric, then turn on the Flame Alchemist, who'd be at a disadvantage in the rain. He knew from experience that while formidable, the younger Elric brother, or what was left of his soul, trapped in unholy combination with that suit of armor, would hesitate long enough for Scar to get in at least one good shot at each of the others. The older man, Hughes, Scar reasoned, he could shield from using either Mustang or Alphonse, and then decide if he wanted to kill the man or just leave him witness to an Ishbalan's vengenace.

He braced himself, waiting for an opportunity, Then, when he was sure of the moment, he surged forward, his tattoo'ed right arm ready to deliver Deconstruction, squarely through Edward Elric's back.

"Petrificus Totalus!"

Scar suddenly found himself stock still, unable to move, his arm still locked outwards.

The four figures turned around, staring at the staute-like avenger right behind them.

"Told you we were being followed." Harry Potter(Freelance Magic Consultant to the United Earths Government) murmurred as he lowered his wand, the rain misting slightly on his glasses and on the stubble on his face.

"I heard him first, Harry." Ranma (ex-Saotome)Hunter(Captain, United Earths Extraterrestrial Fleet Marines) corrected, shaking the rain off his blue slicker, and grateful for the small static repulsion field that kept his own skin dry and his curse untriggered.

"Really, I spotted him on suit sensors before either of you." John-117(Master Chief, United Earths Government SPARTAN Corps) blandly observed, his gold visor betraying nothing of his facial expression, but the way he settled his armor conveying a sense of smugness.

"Yeah, right, so why'd he go after ME first with that deconstruction kata?! Geez, I wear red just ONCE, instead of my usual orange, or my dark uniforms, and I got every nutbar in this city coming after me! I swear, it's a conspiracy!" Naruto Uzumaki(Lieutenant, Global Military Police, United Earths Government) stared angrily as he folded his arms in the red trenchcoat.

"Never accept a gift of clothing from Vash the Stampede" Potter grinned.

"Whatever. Now that we got this guy red-handed, what do we do with him?" Naruto rolled his eyes.

"Turn him over the proper authorities", the Master Chief offered.

"What would be more proper authority than us? I mean, he just tried to kill one of us? Maybe all of us, from what I've heard of this guy." Ranma pointed out, cracking his knuckles.

"Right." Potter was fiddling with his wand in a way that did not seem terribly friendly.

Locked in place, Scar began to sweat as he watched the ninja kitsune-container, the Best Daman Martial Artist In the World, the Mage Who Didn't Die, and the Master Chief(no further disclaimer or qualifier needed) advance on him and felt himself sweat hot torrents, even in the cold drizzle.

Yep, clearly God hated him for falling from the straight and narrow...

Yeah, well, Scar's hot stuff in the absence of OBSCENELY powerful martial artists and mages.
Not that anybody else fares any better. 'Father' is history against anti-Angel weaponry, and we already demonstrated what a MACII cannon round does against a Homunculus. Naturally, Lust getting Dirty Harry'ed(and we're not referring to Potter losing his virginity), is just the warm-up for Envy, Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, and Pride getting their comeuppance. Greed, in the overall scheme of things, is ultimately equivalent to an Aberrant Evil organized crime head; you can deal with him to an extent and not worry about him wiping out a continent or planet(and he's less likely to ever think of doing so if you demonstrate exactly what happens if he does step over the line: "This is Gluttony. This is Gluttony with a Naquadah-enhanced N2 warhead jammed up his (petooty)").

:ok:
Yeah, considering that Scar was at least vigorously religious, once called Alphonse Elric an 'abomination', followed the Ishbalan strictures that found Alchemy abhorrent, considered himself damned for using it(it didn't take much argument from Edward Elric to get Scar to quit yakking about his actions being a holy crusade), being consoled by a DEMON would just about blow his mind, after being bounced around like a beachball by a ninja, a martial warrior, an arch-mage, and a super-soldier.

technically he's only half demon, his mom was a human witch of the line of Pendragon.. and whatever he is, he was raised catholic.. plus he's got a right arm that came from someone else.. and is on a crusade of sorts to avoid his own destinyas the one to start the end of the world..
so as long as he and scar can get past the initial mind blowing, they have a lot in common..

besides, scar would sorta fade into the background in the BPRD, given you have people like Liz, Abe, Johann, Roger, that undead army guy... and he could put his arm to good use.

It's not canon, but one of the 'bloopers' that Hiromu Arakawa tosses in at the end of each FMA volume has Scar turning out to be as much a cat-fancier as Alphonse Elric(He punches open Alphonse's body to reveal the cats the younger Elric is hiding inside, and gets the sparkly ewww-eyed 'Kitties!' look on his face). :P

Hmmm,Let's see.
Amber wasn't happy; Her Gladiator had taken several nasty hits, she had no air support, and the enemy xenomorphs had really done a number on her squad.Out of eight destroids she was down to just her and two others."Blast it where is Holmes and those reinforcements he promised".Suddenly, Srgt.Krystal in her Raidar X shouts out."I 've got five friendlies vectoring in from 9 o'clock".As the Veritechs streak in and open up,she sighs in relief and hears a welcome voice."Did you miss me?"Looking at her damage display and seeing just how badly beaten up her Gladiator is.Yes I did and your late as usual".Holmes tries to say something but Amber cuts him off "Krystal,MinMai let Holmes and his friends finish the enemy off we are RTB.Louie can you get a lock on us? We are almost out of ammo and are not going to be able to walk back.I've got only three of you is that correct.Amber looks at her two remaining squad mates and sighs.Roger.As she fades off the battlefield she looks down and notices that her hands are shaking.
Who is evil?
Who is joy
Who is pain
Who is death
Who is good
Who is blind
Who is foolish
Who is smart
Me and you that's who
For we are mankind.

Deep Forest, dark woods, pretty girl in a red riding hood outfit-
"-AND KEEP YOUR PAWS OFF MY GOODIES!"
-currently ramming a large modified LP-09 laser pistol up the snout of a wolfman(think Lon Chaney version) backed into a tree.
Wolfman:(whimpering)"Oh please please lady, don't-"
The tall broad-shouldered man in the green leathers standing next to (not so little) Red Riding Hood murmurs; "Ah, Dana, I don't think this is the way this story's supposed to go down."
Dana Sterling: "Angelo, if I'm going to be stuck in a fairy tale universe it's going to go down according to the way MY parents told fairy tales! And that means I don't take to being pawed by this mangy grandma-eating mutt!"
Wolfman: "I swear, if you let me go, I'll never eat another grandmother the rest of my-"
Dana: (JAB) "So you ADMIT to eating grandmas?!"
Wolfman: "*whimper* Help me out here, man! This lady's rabid!"
Angelo Dante: "Dude, she's my superior officer. I can't go against her! Besides, the way these stories go, the woodsman's supposed to show up as cavalry to the girl and kill the big bad wolf-"
Wolfman: "*whimper*"
Dante:"Which in your case isn't a good thing, since I really ain't too good with an axe(hefts the big tool for emphasis), so instead of one good clean cut, I might be hacking away two, three, maybe a half-dozen times to hack through something critical enough to let you bleed to-"
Dana: "Angie, Big Bad Wolf here just soiled himself."
Angelo: "You're cleaning that up yourself, fuzzy."
-------------
"Trouble rather the Tiger in his Lair,
Than the Sage among his Books,
For all the Empires and Kingdoms,
The Armies and Works that you hold Dear,
Are to him but the Playthings of the Moment,
To be turned over with the Flick of a Finger,
And the Turning of a Page"

Well, you know what they say; you want something done, you're better off doing it yourself. Or PAYING somebody to do it for you.
Or you can get it done yourself with the right incentive to motivate you. Like having a deadline and the threat of bodily harm.
Capo Enzo's Writer's Block Corrections Service does great work; especially when it comes to kneecaps and concrete.

Oh, I'm sure that somebody were to threaten to break the fingers of one of your hands, you'll discover in yourself a creative genius at one hand typing with the other.
