Demonic/Divine/Supernatural Reward/Boon...

Unread post by Johnathan »

... For services rendered.

It happens ALL THE TIME in video games, comics, cartoons, manga, anime, etc. The characters/group perform some service for some kind of "higher" (or lower) supernatural entity. In exchange for services rendered, the character(s) recieve some new power(s) or ability(ies) rather than money or objects.

Has anyone considered how this could be done for Palladium systems?

Ironically, this came about whilst perusing through the Witch OCC, primarily the Gift of Power and the Gift of Magic. Perhaps these may be considered some staple boons? Especially if you only get to pick a specific power...

Such as the Mystically Bestowed power category, for example?

I dislike having any Hard and Fast rules for boons...
that leads to PC Lawyering...
All boons must be X, Y, or Z...
It is not the Players world... It is the GMs.
Yes a GM needs Players but the converse is true as well...
The Players need a GM.
And care to guess which is in shorter supply?

I do boons as simple as a single hard to obtain spell on up to a host of divine powers or unique items/weapons.
It all depends on the tone of the campaign and the character involved.

If you wouldn't mind, DM, perhaps you could provide a few examples of what you have done in the past?

For me it depends on the nature of what sort of being you did the favor FOR. I look at the relative power of the being, and their nature. A demon lord might offer a dark gift (past examples have included teaching dark magics, granting a dark superpower, transformation into a lesser demon, a minion, or some piece of knowledge that will help the person while furthering a plan of the demon) Where as a god of light might offer something 'brighter' (past examples have included healings, resurections, being taught a healing spell, etc)
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

The "Link to the Supernatural" bonuses and abilities that a Shifter can gain from various entities would fit fairly well with what you're thinking about, I think.

Examples?
alright...
Here are a few
Wizard did a favor for an ancient dragon; the dragon taught him the Talisman spell.
Barbarian did a favor for the gods of light; since he demonstrated the "heart of a Dragon," they granted him the strength of a one (current PS became SN).
Longbowman did a favor for a Wizards Guild; They gave her a unique magic quiver (holds 500 arrows).
Mercenary did favors for 5 Kings over the course of a campaign; He was granted the rank of Training Sargent in each of their armies.
