What's your favorite OCC/RCC to play?

Unread post by SmilingJack »

One of the great joys of role playing is the ability to assume any unique character class or speciality. Rifts offers such a myriad of choices that choosing just one can be a daunting proposition. Despite this many role players seem to gravitate towards a particular class, and play that role Often during adventures.

with that being said,

What is your favorite OCC/RCC to play, and why?

I figure I'll start things off, my absolute favorite OCC to play, is a coalition military specialist.

I love this character type for a plethora of reasons.the most prominent reason is because the Role, is based on espionage ,which allows you to play in a group with other dimensional beings, magic users, and other races without causing problems. Since most coalition officeRs will role play their character being averse to non humans, it makes it really hard to play any coalition OCC if anybody in your party is a nonhuman or magic users and will invariably cause conflict in the party. A military specialist can Infiltrate any group or work alongside other non coalition beings without causing strife, and if you operate under the premise That they are just collecting information on other races or beings,It makes it really easy to play.

I also really like the skill set, because in most Adventures, do you still really help collecting information, gaining access 2 forbidden or locked areas, and they also have solid combat skills making them, a very well rounded character type.

also I usually play the character as a female with high physical beauty which Makes Gaining people's trust much easier, and also allows me to diffuse situations more rapidly then if I was a male, also other enemies and males are more likely to underestimate me, making them more vulnerable.

in my party and Adventures we relied heavily on my character to get us out of situations without using violence all the time, or To make social interactions and information gathering easier.

honestly it's been my favorite character type since I first started playing, and I feel I've gotten really strong at playing the OCC

Wilderness Scout, I love the ability to just walk off into the wild and survive for long periods of time out there.

I'm a fan of military specialist type characters too. Specifically the Special Forces OCC in the Mercenaries book. I also really love the idea of the Momano Hunter.

The Special Forces soldier is good but not to keen on the Momano Hunter myself. I can't figure out what I dislike about them, I just do.

I made an elf and went with the TW armor arm, armed with the flaming sword. Think he had some psionics too. Wandering around the Canadian wilderness, burnastabbing things. It was pretty fun.

I tend more toward the adventurer or scholar types rather than the men of arms. I will sometimes mix it up with psionics or magic but not often. The adventurer types seem more flexible to me in most games I play. But then again, I am not much into the kill/loot, loot/kill games. There is not enough substance in those types of game for me. I like a game where if you have to resort to your weapon, something went horribly wrong.

My fav class to play....hummmm. A Classified Mystic Study. Does not matter which race almost.
Why....cause it is the best magic character type if your GM keeps the group on the go w/o a chance to buy scrolls or trade spells with other mages. And it has The Best spell diversity of spells in it's spell list then any mage w/o a set spell list.

Don't understand the word Classified in this usage...well stop and think about which setting the mystic study is from. :p
May you be blessed with the ability to change course when you are off the mark.
Each question should be give the canon answer 1st, then you can proclaim your house rules.

I have not gotten a chance to whip him out in a game but I really love the concept of the junk crabs. I tend to play operators or other more support roles of that nature and a giant Dbee hermit crab repairman is a concept that amuses the hell out of me.

I've played several sessions where i didn't need to fight, even with my gun-bunny-munchkin-op'd character. It's all about delving into the character's personality and dealing with "real life" in game. Also it's about your character getting trapped by some broad and suckered into not killing people. That last one was just one instance though and i seriously enjoyed the challenge of toning it down with a character who usually answer's questions with a plasma cartridge.

Temporal Wizard.

Why? Because the Temporal Wizard simply has more options than other magic users (although the RUE Shifter is pretty close).

1. Temporal Wizard starts with Dimensional Portal and knowledge of a handful of dimensions.
2. Temporal Magic has some great utility spells (Dimensional Pocket/Enelope, Retro Viewing, et al).
3. Access to high level spells starting out (Talisman!)

Oh, I will not argue that there are no chances to roleplay with a man at arms style character. However, if the whole group is composed of such characters, I have seen most GM's just run battle after battle for them and not delve into a deeper storyline. On the other hand, I have played a warrior type that has gone 12 whole sessions without pulling a weapon once. I was just showing my reasons behind why I prefer not to play those types of characters. I do think every group needs the warrior types (if for nothing other than guarding the noncombatants).

Robot pilot or robo"slammer" headhunter.
I love the big robots, my gm's always use the hf rules from cs war. My favorite robot to take is the mobile howitzer and then get another player or npc to be my coms/belly gunner.

I love laying behind a hill till the spotter says target in range and then getting up for the shot.
My next favorite is either temp warrior or wizard followed by shifter.
Shifters are damn powerfull if you actualy use the summon ability.

Shifter bound to a god of magic as per the RUE has an incredibly impressive starting list of spells. Definitely one of the more powerhouse spell casters around. Now if only your group can help you stay grounded and not wander off into crazy town. Downside of shifters is they walk the tight rope of power and can easily fall off into crazy town dominated by unknownable things from beyond TM.

My favorite class is usually the latest one I've made.

My current favorite is the Scathach from Rifts: England.

The Scathach is a craftsman first, a healer second, and a respectable fighter third. Though a man of magic, the Scathach isn't flashy. His magic is of the subtle and useful variety, the kind you'd want to have in your community. Nails, hammers, horseshoes, chains, and cauldrons that can help people survive in harsh and barren environments. They can make all types of magic herbs and items (though they aren't as skilled or efficient as the Dryad or Herbologist), and mystic herbal healing is quite potent in its own right. They need little support, and can empower and enhance just about any party out there.

In short, it's a versatile class that can work well alone or in groups. The Scathach is well suited to wilderness and lower-tech campaigns, and can do well just about anywhere other than the CS.

They're also good for a variety of power levels. For low-powered groups, they can serve as a primary fighter. For middling groups, they can back up the main fighters. For high-powered groups, they can work well in a support role. They're not terribly useful in a massive tech-on-tech slugfest, but they're quite good against the supernatural (with herbal items).

Yeah the god of magic link knocks you up to i think like 25ish spells to start, plus ppe and after a bit bonous to spell power.
Ive never been gm when a shifter took that though i have myself. If I was gming it darn well better belive for that sort of power your gonna have some tasks to do. My gm didnt make me do anything, I think he forgot about it.

I like T-Men a lot. I also had a WHOLE LOT of fun playing a hippie, pacifist, rogue scholar in James Brown's game at Gallows Con. It was amazing. He ended up beating someone for all he was worth for destroying some books (the "victim" was an MD being and ignored all he could do).

He was a pacifist, but the destruction of books got him to stop saying, "Hey man, just mellow out...see that plant over there? If we boil the leaves and drink the water we'll all feel a lot better and we can just be cool here, okay?" He was LIVID.

There's a reason...and a very good one...that I have certain people in this forum blocked both here and on Facebook.

Going to have to say Military Specialist...they seem to be one of the most well rounded classes. Also, in games that I have played in, they seem to live the longest. None of my MilSpec PC's have died, but the juicer, crazy, glitter boy, great horned dragon and secondary vampire have all died :( I guess surviveability is just higher for some reason.

Real

Though the specialist is awesome enough to get the job done. And it's a normal human, which means that unless they have obviously sill gear, they aren't a high-value target. They usually get the opportunity to make things happen.

They're supernatural beings, basically like a mega juicer crossed with a master psionic. Reptilian and enjoys stalking prey like the Predator in the Arnie movie.
And if... somone whipped out a mini gun. We run and hide. lol.

Yeah, if the GM doesn't give them the burden of being a 'lackey for unfathomly powerful beings from another dimension' then he's not doing his job properly :) Power should have a price ;)

Other than it being too Technocentric I liked the idea of the Cyberknights getting special training like that. I tweak it that they have three choices. Technocentric, Metacentric or a combination of the two.

I can get behind that. I think buffing them slightly is fine, but the whole anti-tech thing really rubbed me the wrong way.
