You guys are terrible... which is probably why I like you so much.

Okay, so, I've been chipping away over the past few weeks (as well as planning some new material for later books). Of course, training with my new job has been priority one but now I'm working into my actual schedule which leaves me some time to write. So until I straighten out the latest thesis roadblock I'm hoping to gain some ground on this thing. Here's where I'm at:

Morphus Tables: 60% complete.
Standard Talents: 95% complete.
Elite Talents: 20% complete.
Additional Information: 10% complete. And no, I'm not going to ruin the surprise of what this is (but I know some of it fans have wanted for a while now).

I also ended up adding several more Talents and a few more tables than I initially planned on, which is another reason it's taking longer to write. In fact, if all of them stay it will more than double what's currently available. But I tell you that I'm really digging all this stuff and can't wait for you guys to read it.

Luckily, the majority of the book is the Talents and Morphus Tables so I think I'm over halfway finished at this point. Of course, there's always the chance that I have trouble with one element or another (one of the tables is already proving to be particularly hairy... pun intended), or a section grows larger than what I currently plan on. But while I'm not going to guess at a time-table just yet I can at least theorize the light at the end of this tunnel.

Seems I can't stop moving the darned goalposts yet. Added still more Morphus and Talent material. As of now I'm sitting on about a hundred new Talents (standard and elite combined). I guess that's the hazard of a job that occasionally strands me with nothing to do but read or think up new Talents.

Morphus Tables: 60% complete.
Standard Talents: 85% complete.
Elite Talents: 25% complete.
Additional Information: 30% complete.

That's the stats for now. Feel like I'm gaining momentum and adding to the pages on a semi-regular basis now. Then again the work schedule for next month sucks. Hope that doesn't impact too much.

Oh, yeah, I also managed to lay out some more material for a couple of future Nightbane sourcebooks I plan to write. I think one of them may even be 8-10% written now. You know what they say about striking while the iron is hot.

Right, so, I've found that mandatory overtime at work saps valuable writing time. Still I've made a bit more progress. As of last night I think I'm done with the standard talents, so I'll be shipping the last installment of them to my reviewers shortly. Other than that, I've gotten about 5% more done on the Morphus tables and maybe another 2-5% done on additional material. That's it for today, folks, I need to sleep now.

Whoops, didn't mean to let this go so long. Unfortunately April ended up lost mostly to the night-job and May to best-man duties for my good friend's wedding (two bachelor parties and the wedding itself). I did, however, get some writing accomplished:

Morphus Tables: 75% complete.
Standard Talents: 100% complete.
Elite Talents: 40% complete.
Additional Information: 40% complete.

I also recently noticed how many views this thread has... wow. You lurkers are really out in force, aren't you? :D

Apologies for the latest absence, but there isn't much new to report. Had a bit of a personal tragedy that took me out of writing-mode for more than a month (lost an old friend at the age of 27). As of now I am back at it and hope to return to full speed soon.

A nice sentiment to be certain, but gaming wasn't really his thing. Primarily I honor his life by continuing to live my own to the fullest extent possible. I just find that whenever I'm in the grieving process it tends to occupy my mind in those quiet times by myself when I would normally be able to get writing done. Haven't quite figured out how to prevent that yet. Luckily, the acute grief is well behind me so it doesn't really interfere now. The march to completion renews.

Sorry, progress has been slow again. Between GenCon, family struggles, a little work on future sourcebooks, proofreading, and a hellacious work schedule it's been tough to find time to write new material. I'm still inching along, though.

Okay, here's the latest:

Morphus Tables: 80% complete.
Standard Talents: 100% complete.
Elite Talents: 55% complete.
Additional Information: 40% complete.

And another major announcement: I'm preparing to send off the first half of the book to my proofreaders while I wrap up the other half. Got a few days off this week so here's hoping I can move the chains a bit more.

Try before the end of the year, though life is still a roller coaster these days. Oh, and I did just spend a good chunk of my writing time on a single Talent (lot of research went into that one).

Hard to say. There are a couple of topics that could balloon out to be larger than what I expect. If not then I'll likely end up going back in and adding some more Talents to fill out the remainder of the page count. I can tell you that right now the common Talents alone are about 20 pages or so without including any art. As is, I'm probably about 2/3 done if not a bit more.

Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yeah. Talking about that three years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning middle and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end, your main character is richer for the experience? Yeah? Yeah?

No, no you deserve some time off.

Hey there Cryx,

You seem a little upset with me for the length of time being taken on Dark Designs. I've apologized a few times already here and abroad for the delays, but let me address the points of your post:

First, no there isn't much of a "story" with this book. It's more a Powers Unlimited-style book with a LOT of new Talent and Morphus stuff and a few additional surprises.

Second, actually I haven't been working on the manuscript for most of the last four years (I first started in late 2009). I still haven't detailed why because it's a bit personal and I'm not sure quite how I want to discuss that particular topic yet. In reality, I had to take a long hiatus from writing almost ANYTHING not school-related for a few years. During most of that period I was also embroiled in an intense Master's program that ate-up the majority of my free time. While I had some minor projects I accomplished, including the article for Rifter #50, every time I got back to Dark Designs and started to make headway (including when I first started this thread) it turned out to be a false-start. Even when I found myself able to write full-bore again, a secret Rifts project drew me away from Nightbane for a month or two. When the Nightbane material started to really flow last year not much of it related to Dark Designs, necessitating my taking copious notes and laying out future books rather than this one or risk losing that inspiration. It wasn't until that task was done that I was able to devote serious time to Dark Designs for more than a week or two at a stretch.

These days I work pretty crazy hours in a pretty stressful job and have had another string of personal misfortunes that came out of the blue to steal time away from writing. I believe I mentioned before the death of a close friend earlier this year, but add to it the failing health of close family-members, having to move other family in with me and help support them, and still fighting with a degree program that hasn't yet yielded me the degree I've all-but accomplished due to circumstances largely beyond my control.

So, while you are pretty clearly frustrated with me, don't think that I'm not equally if not more frustrated with myself and the circumstances. Certainly don't think that I'm sitting back on my haunches being lazy or purposely tormenting you and the rest of the fans by not finishing Dark Designs. I assure you, I am not. I want to get this book done. I want to jump into the future books I've planned. Unfortunately, as a Freelance Writer this isn't my full-time job. This isn't how I support myself. Thus, real life has to come first and my real life hasn't been very forgiving of my wants in recent years.

You know, a friend of mine alerted me to this post since it's often hard just getting the time to swing by the boards these days. He said he hadn't responded despite being angered by it. You see, he felt you were being snarky and condescending about the grinding delay and his knowledge of its origins made him want to jump to my defense. Perhaps you did mean to harass, but I want to thank you for giving me the chance to highlight a couple of the overall points I wanted to make with this thread. They are as follows:

We Palladium Freelancers are not staff-writers or staff-artists. We do this work largely in our free time between work, family, friends, civic organizations, etc., so that you all may take it and enjoy it. I can't speak for the rest of my colleagues, but for me what profit I see from writing for Palladium is far outweighed by the time and effort expended doing so. This, however, does not upset or discourage me. Why? I write for you guys and gals because I love doing it. I love Palladium and its games, I love the fans (for the most part), and I love it when you all get a kick out of something I've helped create. There seem to be some rampant misconceptions about how these creations come about so as I mentioned once before I hoped that in providing an ongoing update about the manuscript it would give fans and aspiring Freelancers a peek into the real process complete with setbacks and mis-steps. What I didn't know at the time is just how profound a setback it might encompass... but that's a story for another day.

At any rate, you and everyone else are certainly free to be disappointed, aggravated, and even downright upset with me for not giving you this book sooner. I would ask, though, that you keep in mind that this work is but one aspect of who we Freelancers are as people (albeit the facet that you as Palladium fans most often see). And as people we are flawed and vulnerable to the chaos of the world that surrounds us. So sometimes, try as we might, things just don't go according to plan. But I promise you and the rest of the fans that I am giving it my all. I hope that in the end it will be enough.

Sincerely,
Mark "Warwolf" Oberle

I gamed in Mark's late-night Rifts session at the Open House last year (****, is it 2013 already?!?!) and I can personally attest to his phenomenal ability to weave a tale, spin a yarn, and tell an AWESOME story. I absolutely LOVE the NBSGuide and can't effin' wait to get my hands on his new book -- whenever it sees the light of day. I'm also acutely aware of the fact that when Mark finishes it and turns it in -- it could be a year or even LONGER before it actually gets edited, added to, crowdsource-funded, published, or WHATEVER!

All I can say is that if the writing is the caliber of NBSG and the content is a PUnltd-esque layout of new talents, new OCCs, new morphus tables, and some new VtM-esque levels of political intrigue and drama and dramatis personae then it's well worth the wait. One of the most awesome appeals to me of the Nightbane universe is the ongoing politics, rivalry, and intricate interwoven plots that...well, really give some meaty plot hooks and lots of material for us as GMs to incorporate and work into our campaigns.

Cheers Mark!

Been a hectic couple of months with family in and out of the hospital. Still getting a bit done here and there, though. This is where things stand:

Morphus Tables: 88% complete.
Standard Talents: 100% complete.
Elite Talents: 64% complete.
Additional Information: 66% complete.

At this point I'm a little over 80% to my page-goal. I might end up expanding one section or another to get there depending on how long some of the additional info ends up being. Could even have a new Nightbane R.C.C. to throw in the mix if I can figure out the particulars...

Have a happy Thanksgiving, folks. Keep the faith.

So there I was, moving along at a great clip on the manuscript. Had a few days off and was looking to knock out at least a few more pages. Then I fired up my laptop and was greeted with, "disk read error." Apparently my OS crapped out, so I've been unable to work on anything for the past week or so while it's getting fixed. Might overshoot my end of the year deadline by just a tad now, considering the holidays... frustrating. At any rate, here's the latest:

Morphus Tables: 92% complete.
Standard Talents: 100% complete.
Elite Talents: 75% complete.
Additional Information: 80% complete.

I'm closing in on 90% of my page-goal. If it weren't for technical difficulties I'd already be past that.

Warwolf, do you think you could consult with Kevin and anyone else working on the Nightbane line regarding whether or not the newest book could briefly address any astral realms mentioned in previous Nightbane sourcebooks, and clarify which level (outer/inner/void) of the Astral Planes they are on? This was left out in every instance I've seen even though it's a critical detail.

In my head I have a clear understanding that that is the inner only. Is that really not mentioned anywhere?

Whew... another unexpected leave of absence. I guess that's what happens when your OS decides to up and imitate Bartleby the Scrivener...

The good news? I didn't lose any work.

The bad news? I spent over two months without a computer to do my writing on.

The AWESOME news? Well... check it out:

Morphus Tables: 100% complete.
Standard Talents: 100% complete.
Elite Talents: 100% complete.
Additional Information: 100% complete.

Yep, I've hit the end of what I had planned to write. Of course some of the additional material ended up not needing to be as lengthy as I thought, so I'll probably dust off a few more Talent concepts to fill the remaining few pages. With any luck, by this time next week I'll be in full-blown editing mode (which never takes me all that long since I edit a lot as I write). People with an inside track are already excited about the material they've seen. I can't wait 'til you guys get to see it.

J.L. Duncan wrote:Just out of curiosity, what is the page count you hope to reach?

This is most likely going to be a 96-page sourcebook similar to the Powers Unlimited books.

Not in this book since it has little to do with the Astral Plane. I've considered writing another sourcebook dealing with the Astral Plane and some of the kingdoms that figure heavily into the War of Light and Dark, but I've not even started a notes page on that project yet. Which kingdoms were you wanting to know about, specifcally? If you PM me I can always give you a tentative answer.

I don't suppose there is any chance of a teaser or sample of the sorts of things you've been working on for this book?

Didn't think so.

Kind of curious as to what the new Talents you've been working on will be like.

Quick update: Took a bit longer to tweak one of the sections than I anticipated. I've also had some SNAFUs with proofreaders over the past few months (had to swap a couple when life got in the way of others). No hard feelings since these guys are all unpaid volunteers, but just one more example of how circumstances can slow a manuscript way down. I'm currently waiting on two folks to get back to me with comments, but after that it should only be a week or two of work to get the final draft prepared for submission. In the meantime, I've been playtesting some of this new material with my group and everone seems to really like it. Keep the faith, guys. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Razorwing wrote:I don't suppose there is any chance of a teaser or sample of the sorts of things you've been working on for this book?

Didn't think so.

Kind of curious as to what the new Talents you've been working on will be like.

Hmm... I think there was some teaser info earlier in this thread. But since you asked:

It would be a really bad idea for me to post full-text versions of any of the Talents. However, I can offer some behind-the-scenes information. First, I've really tried to run the gamut of possible abilities in Dark Designs, and I think I ended up with a good mix of combat, transport, detection, stealth, etc. I would say that the majority of these new Talents are unlike most anything seen in other sourcebooks. Second, there are a LOT of Talents. At last count I had more than doubled the number of these unique powers available to players and GMs. Finally, I've taken pains to make sure that each Morphus table has at least THREE elite Talents tied to it so each player within a given party is likely to have some distinct abilities open only to them.

And that's just the Talent information, friend. There's more to the book than Morphus tables and Talents. But you guys will have to wait and read the product description to see what other surprises I whipped up...

ooo... more fun abilities for us... and new Elite Talents for my Talent Shaper (any chance of making this optional occ from Rifter 44 official?) to acquire (regardless of what her Morphus is actually like).

Pitty we have to wait for Palladium Books to get around to publishing it. :(

Finished.

What?

You read that right. Manuscript is complete and was emailed to Palladium this morning. Had some setbacks during the editing process like every other part of production for this one, but it's finally finished. Unless Kev wants to expand it the final page-count should come in at 96. That may not seem very big, especially given how long it has taken. However, that's 96 pages of mostly what is referred to as "crunch," which isn't so easy to write. Trust me. I feel like more of a "game-designer" than a "writer" after this project. Anywho, keep your eyes on the press releases and murmurs for any further info regarding Dark Designs. Don't hesitate to post any questions you might have here as well. On that note:

Zenvis wrote:I am so gitty right now. I want more narrative and Nightbane.

I am sure you meant "giddy" and I can only hope you're still excited. Nightbane you're likely to get. Narrative... well I was able to slip tidbits in here and there. You and other fans who have clambered for more info on the world will likely be more satisfied by my upcoming manuscripts, though. I was able to already start putting in a bit of work on them while finishing Dark Designs. What are they? Stay tuned to these boards for those answers.

Shark_Force wrote:any elite talents that require you have multiple traits/tables?

Nope. I feel like that would be too limiting. I did engineer it so that each table has at least 3 elite Talents tied to it, though.

Can't say for sure, the dockett is pretty full at Palladium HQ. I'd like to hope it'll be some time later this year, though. And don't worry, I don't intend to ever produce anything like Shadows of Light.

96 pages of awesomeness? Well... once they add illustrations that page count could will likely exceed 100 pages.

Can't wait to see what wonderfully dark goodies you've given us.

Palladium's version of the Bermuda Triangle... many manuscripts go in... only a few come back out many years later. ;) :(

While this is true, I'm pretty upbeat about its chances. After all, it's a smaller book which should reduce the editing time and production cost. If I pester Kev about it enough at GenCon maybe I can convince him to slot it in this year. Fingers crossed.

I can say that my group has been having fun with the new material. 8-)

Based on all their recent press releases, it doesn't seem like Nightbane's even on their radar. I suspect we'll be waiting a while.

I don't know, I always felt Nightbane would get kinda screwed in an MDC enviroment sinse their facade remains SDC and thus extremely vunerable to being oneshotted whenever they hide.

It would be such a shame if this book joins all the others in the "coming soon" limbo. Hopefully they will realize that they need to give some TLC to their other gamelines... not just one or two of them.

If and when this book hits editorial let me know. I would LOVE to do some artwork for Nightbane. I am working up some character designs for it right now in fact (to show as samples.)

Nothing new to report, I'm afraid. It's been roughly a year now since the manuscript hit Kev's inbox, but this is the unfortunate truth of submitting to a publisher in the middle of a production log-jam. I'm not complaining, though, as there have been quality manuscripts waiting for a green-light for far longer than Dark Designs. So for now, we all wait and keep our fingers crossed. I'll let you folks know something when I do. Hang in there.

Nightbane has a main book and four sourcebooks in print. What about the game is so unplayable that you would shelve the books because a new book hasn't come out yet?

well lets see a creating encounters in this system is a pain cuz there is ZERO guidance rules or anything. its a throw things in an eitehr its 2 weak or 2 strong. The systems im switching over 2 have support for creating encounters AND at least care about their player base.

The most exciting thing to my mind is that there is finally some sort of guidelines on making new talents other than "you can do it"
Its about as clear and concise (i.e. highly arbitrary and full of GM rulings) as the spell creation guidelines in Through the Glass Darkly, but it s a set of guidelines and as such is infinitely better than the non-existent guidelines we had before...

I am just wishing that the author had filed the serial numbers off of his sources of inspiration a bit more. A lot of them are... bad. As in "if I put it in the forums I would be flagged for violating the No Conversions policy" bad. But it is a new book, so that is 100% good.
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.
