It's like Star Wars. Doing them attracts legal mud. Not so much as with LucasLawyers on the prowl, but the whole BattleTech 'Unseen' that continues to cause problems.

Rather than deal with that headache, just nuke and move on to more interesting fare. Material that is actually expanded on from the get-go.

it's a legal headache.. and something that has a lot of sore fans on both sides due to past and continuing legal headbutting. plus its a crossover nightmare in terms of establishing relative power levels.. there is no clear cut baselines to compare between the two realities, since Btech's game rules for weapons and armor have only a tenious connection to real world stats, and its non-game rule based descriptions are all over the map. ask any two Btech fans how powerful an AutoCannon5 is for example, and you'll get 6 answers. because the game #'s say one thing, the fluff implies another, the novels indicate 2 more, and every fan has their own attempt to rationalize the previous 4.. the result of the original company not being big on continuity and eratta, and the more recent owners not wanting to completely rewrite older stuff as they try to streamline the whole wibbly-wobbly mess the old company left.

so basically, we're trying to keep this fun and avoid stepping on toes. i was the first to do a Btech cross over here.. the uES Philedelphia doing a cross diemnsion jump, encountering a Comstar warship, then both realities having their memories erased of the incident by interdimensional lawyers..

Indeed.
It's safer to contemplate what one of Ian Banks' Culture GSVs(General Service Vehicle) could do against Dolza's entire armada.

If you don't already sense the snapper, you're obviously not familiar with The Culture. :bandit:

NOW that makes sence. I honestly didn't know any of that. Not that I don't know any Battletech. Read some of the books, played a board game or 2, but mostly the computer games, like MechWarrior. And that is confusing. No wander you guys have been avoiding it then. Though it is sad, it would have been fun to throw them into this.

Culture ships have some of the BEST names ever....

Equally worth reading is Neal Asher(although his works are less well known because not all of his books have come over the puddle from Britain...I have to order many of his books through Amazon.com). In many ways his -Polity- reads like Iain Banks Culture....big AI Minds, snarky-powerful drones, powerful reconfigurable warships, and near-immortal human beings who can select a variety of forms of transhuman existence.
In fact, given that modern Earth exists as a backwater in Iain Banks' Culture(there's a short story where a Culture ship-Mind snarks about listening to modern Earth communications), the -Polity- comes across almost like an Earth that's evolved with an unseen nudge or two from unseen Culture hands, and is starting up along similar lines to the Culture(though admittedly the Polity has at least one thing the Culture doesn't have, and that's 'runcible' teleportation between star systems without the need for starships. I can easily see the Polity being Earth grown up, exploring its immediate surroundings, fighting with its neighbors(particularly the Prador) and not yet aware of the massive Culture lurking in the rest of the galaxy.

actually going by the book's i've read the Culture is humanities future.. odds are references to 'listening to modern earth' is a reference to the idea of eavesdropping on history via running ahead of our old radio signals.

that said earth is something of a backwater for the culture proper. or maybe more accurately, it's version of Detroit.. big in its heyday, fading since.

Well, Vol. 15 of Gunslinger Girl wraps the whole thing up for good.
Not quite onion rings ending, but better than GANTZ.

Spoiler:
Everybody who doesn't die in the Turin Reactor fiasco ends up being demobilized when the cyborg program is canceled. The remaining 1st gen cyborgs are put on a cruise boat and sent into peaceful retirement. All die of natural causes, albeit due to their abbreviated lifespans, within the next two years(Claes is last seen alive onboard, but already she has premonitions of her death). Even Petra, the sole 2nd generation cyborg, dies of leukemia. Triela's the only one who really has any after-story, thanks to Hillshire having some of her ova harvested and banked against a tragic future; a district arttorney who was protected by Hillshire and Triela, and who it's hinted started having a relationship with Hillshire, is willed the banked eggs, and bears Triela's daughter(or possibly clone), who years later learns the history of her 'family' and makes an award-winning documentary(possibly about the cyborg program; it's hinted that the surviving adults are still in counter-intelligence, but have approved the girl's research work).

Edwards looked at the SDF-3, reeling and burning from the surprise Invid attack as his battlecruiser and its Invid escort sped away.
He then turned, smiling to his captive audience, chained at the back of the battlecruiser's bridge.
"How do you like my little victory, first of many, my songbird?" he asked Minmei.
Minmei's downcast eyes looked up, then locked on his own.
Her lips began to move.
She began to -sing-.

"Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me."

Edwards was shocked with the bridge suddenly lit with lightning, dancing from control station to control station, burning his Ghost officers.
Only his tinted artificial eye was able to see the shackles holding Lynn Minmei EXPLODE, He also saw the blur of something shoot across the room and into her now free and outstretched hand.
And he almost went blind again when her hand lit with a beam brighter than a sun, in a malign red that glowed of hell unleashed.
He DID see the two Ghost soldiers that had been standing on either side of Minmei come apart, cut into bloody steaming quarters as Minmei stepped forward, the bar of hellfire in her hand spinning like Satan's flaming baton as she marched toward him.

“To be a Sith is to taste freedom and to know victory.”

One of his loyalists got up and tried to draw his pistol on her; his hands and head immediately parted company with his body.

"As long as the Dark Side flows through the cracks of my flesh, I cannot be killed.”

Edwards went for his own sidearm, only to feel an agony not felt since that day at Alaska Base. He didn't have to look down to know his arm was gone, cauterized by the smell of it.
And now Minmei was right in front of him, her face underlit by that static beam of lucifer-light, now held inches between their bodies. Her gaze had not left his since this all started, but now her eyes seemed to push INTO him.

“I have studied you, and found nothing but weakness."

The blade of hot fury rose, blinding him.

"Time for you to die."

Huddled in a alleyway between the massive metal tanks, the two stared at each other in mounting horror.
Groggy and befuddled their minds might be, slow and weak their bodies, heavy with forced sleep, unused to their recent sudden activity, but their sense of terror was becoming crystal clear with every passing moment.
Each looked over the other, taking in features familiar from any passing examination in a mirror, but here was no reverse image before them. The same curves, the same features, the same red hair, the same blue eyes, the same mounting look of shock.
“You look...like me!”
“No, can’t be...you look exactly like me!”
Not exactly, though, and that was the dawning new twist to their predicament; there WERE differences. Just not GOOD differences. As in the large plastic tags that gathered their still-wet red locks into ponytails. Each tag was numbered; one reading ‘715’, the other ‘813’. And there was the barcode tattooed under each’s navel. Though no expert at these sorts of things, each young woman stared at the other’s marking, then glanced down at their own mark, and realized it was slightly different.
But for those artificial distinctions, each was a spitting image of the other.
“What....the...hell?”
“Who...did... this?”
Their eyes rise to take in their surroundings; the chromed walls of metal polished to almost mirror-like reflectivity.
And on opposite sides of their hiding place, they can make out embossed number plates; ‘628’, ‘627’.
“Well, if it isn’t our sleepwalkers!”
The voice is familiar, as both whirl to confront the source. The young woman with the short brown hair is indeed familiar, though the business suit she wears like a uniform is not so familiar. The predatory and possessive smile she also wears is all TOO familiar.
“Hooky time’s over, girls, back in the stasis tanks with you! We’ve got orders to fill!”
Behind her the half-dozen Kasumis in nurses’ outfits, all beaming identical smiles, and armed with tranquilizer guns and butterfly nets, close in.

Kuno cloned for (demented) love. Nabiki's just more efficient at making a buck(off Ranma).
It's the dark side of Clones-R-Us.
As for Kasumi... depending who how you look at it, she's either an oblivious airhead, a defensively in denial emotional abusee, or a dangerously brilliant sociopath.
Here, Nabiki's cloned for the obliviously helpful airhead(with some kink).
Of course, she might be in serious trouble if Evil Megaversal Empress Kasumi(of the Triad of Kasumi, Musica, and Annie) ever found out by this little operation.

Though I always thought a NEMA versus the Robotech Masters would be interesting, until one realizes that unless you can somehow conjure up what the Golden Age had for space assets(there are some hints in Mutants in Orbit, at at best that's scant and not very promising) the Masters could just go orbital bombardment on NEMA;s(and Triax's, and Russia's, and Japan's, and China's, and the South American stats, and...) ass before sending down the troops. Once the Tirolians get down, though, within strangling range, it's all over for them, what with genetically engineered soldiers, cyborgs, Juicers, robots and power armor popping out of bunkers left and right, and the U.S. Navy surfacing to maul them as well.
Worst case scenario, however; the Masters inadvertently trigger the Coming of the Rifts. Try extracting the Matrix from THAT mess.

Wouldn't NEMA basically be the North American branch of the PKF, er umm, the Army of the Southern Cross (ASC, or as I prefer to call it the Army of the Security Council...as opposed to the UN Rapid Deployment Force and the UN Rapid Expeditionary Force).

-STS
My skin is not a sin - Carlos Wallace
A man's rights rest in three boxes. The ballot box, jury box and the cartridge box - Frederick Douglass
I am a firm believer that men with guns can solve any problem - Inscriptus
Any system in which the most populated areas have the most political power, creates an incentive for areas that want power to increase their population - Killer Cyborg

PKF? You been reading Daniel Keyes Moran? He has a trilogy where the United States is conquered by the UN's PKF, with orbital lasers and cyborg Elites(think Rifts Cyberhumanoids with superconductor woven in their skin that dissipates spot heating from lasers, have lasers built into their forearms, and whose surgery can only be performed in orbit). The first book deals with an attempt to engineer telepathic Peaceforcers that goes bad when the telepaths won't obey, the second book, The Long Run, is arguably the best, dealing with one of the surviving teeps, Trent the Thief, on the run, Les MIserabales-style, from an obsessive PKF Elite out to capture and make an example of him, and the final book rather bogs down between an attempted uprising by American rebels(the Johnny Rebs) and a substory involving ancient alien humans(much like David Weber's First Empire) who have been affecting human events. There's some silliness about time wars as well, and a basically unhappy universe where humans discover via sublight probe that there IS life out there, in the form of giant megaconstructs protected by unfriendly warships(one of the revived ancient humans identifies them as the same alien species that was stalemating them thousands of years in the past)...besides destroying the probe, though, they don't seem to have taken much notice of us...so either everything out there is automated, or the aliens consider us below their notice.
Surprisingly, the whole UN-as-bad-guys schtick isn't played like a bad survivalist pulp fantasy(though the PKFs, and especially the Elites, are nasty pieces of work willing to call in artillery and nukes to deal with dissidents)...the Jonny Rebs have their own nasties......... and The Long Run is a rippin' fun chase.

Ah yes, it reminds me of that whole Ogre/Carwars crossover.

However, AI's have been barred from WOT since that regrettable Sharon Apple business.

Of course, in the (rightfully discredited) McKInney End of the Circle novel, there's a Karbarrean vessel that's been named Enterprise(or a phonetic facsimile thereof) in deference to their Human allies. The ship and its captain K'urk, last about 3 minutes before the Haydonite Awareness infects its systems and causes it to self-destruct. :P
