question on size..

Unread post by glitterboy2098 »

if a F-203 or VF-1 is defined as "medium size" (for a project i'm working on), where would the following craft end up size wise?

LVT Avenger II
ES-11D Cat's Eye
Comanchero
Sea Sergeant
VC-33 Mom's Kitchen

VFH-10 AGACs
VF-8 Logan
the ASC recon VTOL (forget the name.. the one with the fan lift system)

Alpha Fighter?

i'm asking because i'm working on a group for my website that has space limitations, and rather than fix them to a specfic vehicle load for each ocean vessel or platform, i want to descibe the hanger space as in terms of how many aircraft of a specific size each can hold.

beta is a bit bigger than a VF-1 in fighter mode, so either medium-large or Large?

The AHR-15 Phantom is smaller then a Logan in fighter mode.

Further to my last, here's some more precise comparisons WRT the size of a VF-1:

glitterboy2098 wrote:LVT Avenger II

~25% larger than a VF-1, though its body is narrow and doesn't take up much floorspace.

glitterboy2098 wrote:ES-11D Cat's Eye

~35-40% larger than the VF-1, wings do not fold, so a large footprint.

glitterboy2098 wrote:Comanchero

~20% larger than a VF-1, lengthwise, but VERY narrow body (so a modest footprint possibly slightly smaller than that of a VF-1.)

glitterboy2098 wrote:Sea Sergeant

~25% larger than a VF-1 lengthwise, but again a relatively narrow body, so the hangar footprint is only marginally larger than a VF-1's.

glitterboy2098 wrote:VC-33 Mom's Kitchen

This is not a small plane by any standard of measure... you could probably park a VF-1 in its hangar footprint twice over with a little room to spare.

glitterboy2098 wrote:Alpha Fighter?

Very small, about 80% the size of a VF-1's hangar footprint... it would be even smaller, but it can't fold that delta wing.

It depends on a the reference point. By Area, Volume, mass, or something else. I bring this up, because by volume and area, a Beta with the wings folded (as seen in Ep#74 w/FSW, vs TSC w/RSW, when on the raft) actually takes up less room than a VF-1 at minimum sweep wings (tail still raised), but is nearly twice the mass (by the 2E RPG, by the RT.com infopedia).

Putting the VF-1 as the medium size also raises the question of what the wing sweep is if Area or Volume are used (VF-1 gains ~78% of both with the wings at max sweep vs min. sweep).

By Area:
Extra Large: Anything over 1000% of the VF-1 size range
EC-33 Tiger's Eye
VC-27

Large: Antyhing over the VF-1's size Range (by 50%-1000%)
S/ES-12 Avenger/Stalker
SH-62 Sea Sergeant
ES-11 Cat's Eye
VC-33 Mom's Kitchen
SHC-08 Star Goose
F/A-112 Chimera
Legois Combo (max sweep wings, Alpha docked to Beta)

Medium Large: anything over the VF-1's size range (by ~50% over)
F-203 Dragon
AH-68 Comanchero

Medium: anything w/n the VF-1's size range between min and max sweep wings (100-178% using the min as baseline):
Mim_31 Karyovin
SF-3A Lancer II
F/A-109 Sylphid
F/A-110 Falcon II
VFB-9 Beta (with Wings at Max Sweep)
Legois combo (min. sweep wings, Alpha docked to Beta)

Medium Small: anything less than the VF-1 size range (by 50%):
LH-2000 Snoop (though take away the rotors...)
QF-3000 Ghost (it is slightly smaller than a VF-1)
VF-8 Logan
VFH-8 AGAC (either vehicle mode)
VFA-6 Alpha
VFB-9 Beta (with Wings at min sweep)
SF/A-5

Small: anything less than the VF-1 size range (by more than 50%)
VHT-1 & 2
AHR-15 Phantom

By Volume:
Extra Large: Anything over 1000% of the VF-1 size range
VC-27
EC-33B
SHC-08 Star Ghoose

Large: Antyhing over the VF-1's size Range (by 50%-1000%)

AH-68 Comanchero
SH-62 Sea Sergeant
ES-11 Cat's Eye
VC-33 Mom's Kitchen
F-110 Falcon II
F/A-112 Chimera
VFB-9 Beta (max sweep)
Legois (max sweep, Alpha plus Beta)

Medium Large: anything over the VF-1's size range (by ~50% over)
SF-3A Lancer II
Legois (min sweep, Alpha plus Beta)
Medium: anything w/n the VF-1's size range between min and max sweep wings:
QF-3000 Ghost
F/A-109 Sylphid

Medium Small: anything less than the VF-1 size range (by 50%):
VF-8 Logan
VFA-6 Alpha
VFB-9 Beta (min sweep wings)
SF/A-5

Small: anything less than the VF-1 size range (by more than 50%)
LH-2000 Snoop
VFH-10 AGAC
VHT-1
VHT-2
AHR-15 Phantom

By Mass:
Extra Large: Anything over 1000% of the VF-1

Large: Antyhing over the VF-1's (50%-1000%)
EC-33B Tiger's Eye
VC-27 Tunny
SHC-08 Star Goose
VHT-1
F/A-112 Chimera
VFB-9 Beta
Legois (Alpha Beta combo)

Medium Large: anything over the VF-1's range (by 25-50% over)
ES-11 Cat's Eye
CC-33 Mom's Kitchen

Medium: anything w/n +/-25% the VF-1's :
F-203 Dragon
MiM-31 Karyovin

Small: anything less 50% the VF-1 :
AH-68 Comanchero
LH-2000 Snoop

well, this is mostly in terms of storage, so size should be reckoned by the typical storage mode. if wing sweep or unfolded wings would make a major change for deckpsace concerns, its worth noting.

part of the reason i'm asking is because i have a faction for my invid era europe that operates off of a set of oil platforms in the north sea, and uses some modified cargo ships as improvised aircraft carriers, in a fashion akin to the RFA Reliant or the later Ship-based Containerized Air Defense System concept.

i want to be able to define the hanger and deck space on both the platforms and the ships without giving actual, fixed, dimensions.
