Since Thorr-kan opened the door...
One Magnificent Bastard Deserves Another
“Sounds like you had a real time of it. I was just in a galactic war; seems simple by comparison.”
General T.R. Edwards looked across the table at his Contact host. Normally he disliked diplomatic missions, but he couldn’t say no when Admiral Hunter asked him to be primary in this interdimensional Contact mission. And, as things turned out, he’d found the mission relatively easy and a pleasure, the ‘stuffed shirt’ he’d feared having to deal with failing to materialize. Instead he’d found a kindred spirit in overcoming adversity and turning negatives into positives.
Commander Ikari Gendo raised an eyebrow: “Why yes, after leading the Old Men on and focused so much on my supposed conspiring against them to initiate my own version of Third Impact, they completely failed to see my REAL plan. That incidentally included using the funds they’d given me to figure out a way to get my wife back into a corporeal state, train my son and daughters to play ‘emotionally abused children’ and further my charade, and lead the Old Men out onto thin ice. Then, after dealing with the Angel problem, pulling the carpet out from under their elaborate Red Earth scheme was fairly easy. Now that the world knows what REALLY happened in Second Impact, public opinion is on my side. my family’s back together, and justice is being done. Now Humanity can REALLY meet its potential by going on out into the stars...once we’ve tied up a few loose ends here on Earth.”
Gendo gestured out the window to the converted service bay, where a heavily bound Kihl Lorenz teetered precariously on the edge of a vat of boiling lard.
General Edwards raised his beer in toast to his host, a gesture that was reciprocated as, behind them, in full view of an approving world media, the would-be mastermind of Third Impact was tipped cursing into the deep fryer.

Well, mathamaticaly, it is possible to have at least one good Gendo out there, somewhere.

Oooh, nice.
I was considering writing up Earth 666 implementing some sort of Interdiction on the rest of the Multiverse ("They're all crazy! We're doing FINE. Bye, now!"), but who has time?
If you're a fan of Eyrie Productions and the Undocumented Features fanfic, Gendo gets two more happy endings. They've got a NERV fic where Gendo's able to beat the alien mind control and get some happiness. And the actor who plays Gendo's a pretty nice guy, though a bit of a theatrical perfectionist.
Read the outtakes. Well worth it.

"Things get around."

"Looks pretty nasty enough from here. Whow! What do you make of it, a Class Five?"

"I hear it's the child of a god."
"Okkkkkaaaaaayyyy...for that, we have the insurance policy. Suzuhara, you're up."

"Because you had experience fighting bio-engineered mutant whale warships back in Antarctica during the Neo-SEELE Wars?"
"And because Shinji Sterling isn't here?"
"And because you insisted to your big brother you wanted more out-dimensional missions?"
"Okay, okay, okay. I'll go save the girl and the city..."
"Just remember, we also got the BFG in orbit for support."
"Isn't that kinda DANGEROUS in close proximity to a coastal city?"
"What's a few giant tidal waves between friends?"
"Remember what happened to the Minoans?"
"In that case, try leading the big bruiser away before calling down the lightning."
"KRONOS' HAIRY BUTTOCKS!!! WHAT IS THAT?!"

We're talking the biggest piece being bite-sized nuggets.
Made the mistake of watching the remake of Clash of the Titans after seeing Pacific Rim. The moment the Kraken showed up, tentacles and all, I'm thinking; "Yeah, Stryker Eureka can make this squid its *****".
And the Evangelion crew would simply crack their knuckles and huff: "Okay, time to earn our paychecks."
Now REALLY taking it off the rails would be to hunt up Medusa using telepresence rigs(or tossing Shinji Sterling at her) and diplomatically persuade her to a little shindig called 'sticking it to the gods'. Cue Medusa showing up with a burkha on and voluntarily turning the Kraken to a new harbor statue.

Didn't, in classic myth, the Gorgons have sisters?
Yes, Medusa did: Stheno and Euryale. According to Wikipedia, they were the immortal sisters, while Medusa was the mortal(and thus killable) one.

I think I might have read a few of those years ago.
Dairugger XV wrote:Aoi Hidaka sat there watching one Dana Sterling, Shinji Ikari-Sterling, and some alternate universe Shinji Ikari doing a counseling session. Aoi had volunteered to sit in and provide moral support mostly out of an idle curiosity as to how two versions of people from alternate universes would interact with each other. So far, it was rather disappointing; the Shinji that seemed to be a foster brother to Dana was reasonably well-adjusted and trying to give tips and advice on what he did to deal with the trauma. The immature Shinji just continued to curl up like a hedgehog with prickles of whininess keeping everyone away.
Aoi sighed, “Yadda, yadda. Listen kids, at least two of us at this table actually understand you, and one of those is you. As for me, yeah, my life started as hell but I chose to rise above it, and that’s what you need to do, or you can be miserable for the rest of your life.”
Immature Shinji just kept crying, “How can you possibly understand me?! I’m-“
Aoi stopped Dana from slapping Shinji and then put her hand on his shoulder, “Kid, I’m a genetically engineered human being and yet somehow I was a complete disappointment to my ‘parents.’ They rejected me, everyone at school sensed I was different and isolated me. My life started potentially in a worse place than you were.”
Shinji stopped sniffling for a moment and looked at Aoi with shock in his eyes. Aoi continued, “The thing I did was I found things that I was good at and made me very happy. I then poured everything I had into those things and become a top model and an undefeated F1 race car driver. I chose to defy the bad situation I was in and found a better life.”
Shinji just turned his head, “But Misato, Asuka and everyone else will just accuse me of running away again. They just want me to pilot the Eva.”
Aoi just smiled, “Then deal with your situation for now, but look for your happy place outside of that tiny sphere of people NERV has you surrounded with. It took me the better part of my life to find my true friends, the people that will go through hell with me with no expectations in return. Those NERV people, to include you gene donor, may seem like the most important people there is now, but if they keep pushing you to do something you don’t want, then they aren’t your true friends. Keep looking for those that are even if it takes years because they are out there.”
Aoi shuffled immature Shinji’s hair, “I was originally forced to be the lead pilot of Dancouga Nova. I only kept doing it because I didn’t want my memories erased. I eventually came to enjoy it, but the Evas are just creepy and your enemies are even creepier. Therefore, I don’t expect you to do that.”
Immature Shinji looked down, “So I just have to keep piloting the Eva after all?”
Aoi smiled and shook her head, “No, you just need to find a better alternative and then burn your bridges once you have. You will find yourself and where you are happiest, you just have to trust yourself to look for it yourself rather than wait for someone to give it to you. I’ll even help you look.”
Immature Shinji gave a weak smile. Dana and mature Shinji just had their mouths open in shock.
Nicely written.

This got complicated a long time ago.
