Magical Girls in Heroes Unlimited?

Unread post by curb »

I recently spoke to some old players who asked why we never tried the Magical Girl route in Heroes Unlimited. I thought about it and realized that it would actually work. The three Magic Types would work well as Magical Girls. However, I'd like to know if anyone's ever tried this before I start working on a test concept. It would still be a pretty action oriented setting and I'd have to work other hero types into magical girls, Psychic would be easy as would the hardware types. I would like some opinions on the general idea.

Armageddon Unlimited offers some new variations on the "Mystic Bestowed" category which may be useful to also look at for this. I know this has come up once before - maybe a search in the Heroes Unlimited forum can locate the older discussions? I seem to recall people also used variations of the Nightbane rules and tables to help mimic this genre.

I'll work on posting my Magical Girl Updated Concept here and then flesh them out with Heroes Unlimited. Should be interesting.

I've tried this type of character. I tried to make it work so hard and it is just impossible in the long term without having the right kind of personality and mind set. I think some people here might remember my Pop singer mystic knight "defender" from fantasy land that I thought was a interesting idea at the time. :?

That or the vampire martial arts vagabond...

I think my Robotech sniper was probably the most sane character I've had on these message boards. Ironically, it's also representative of what I normally play.

I've played a "magical Girl" char before, about 8 years ago.

She was a Mystic Study with a minor hero power I created, "create force clothing".
She would be the most fashionable gal in the room and didn't have a debt problem.

I read you, Colt.

There was someone who used to troll around here, not sure if on the forums, but definitly in the Chat Rooms, who hand a hang up for playing super over-powered magic users (sometimes dragon hatchling magic users or demi-god magic users) and they almost always wore super cute anime outfits. Variation on the same name with nearly every character, so on and so forth. Decent player overall, but the magical-girlness, along with deity level power with almost every character, got old pretty fast.

Another reason I don't play/ run HU... the amount of gender-bending must be atrocious.

I don't follow - would you care to elaborate on this? Why would the amount of gender-bending be "atrocious" in Heroes Unlimited when compared to other Palladium game lines?

The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

This is something I tend to agree with.

Though I know a lot of people who clamour on and on about how we need to accept people and deal with issues, but when they come across something they don't like are 100% all about just walking away because dealing with others problems isn't worth their time.

It's a pretty rough divide, but I guess that could go for a different discussion.

Does it really matter? As long as the player is either not being ridiculous about it or everyone is in agreement about the level of ridiculousness, it's all in good fun. I've played a couple of male characters (one a flirt, everyone loved it). My husband has played a female character so well he's gotten complements from women. And in a single gender table, to have a full range of social interactions in the game context the characters have to have a mix of genders (guys say things to girls and vice versa that never come up in a single sex setting).

I've played female characters in the past, but I never felt comfortable doing it. For instance I never had trouble drawing the character, or thinking about how cool the character would be to play, yet I wouldn't really get into them the way I would a male character. When I realized I wasn't being very fair, I stopped doing it.

Though oddly I play pretty good female NPC's when I GM...but there's a lack of personal association there, which might explain it.

My usual player group includes me plus 2 men, and 2 (sometimes 3) woman. Most games we have an even gender balance, sometimes we have more female players.

My wife has a male character in my friends game. The character is selfish and often flirts with female NPCs, I'd say she does a fairly good job RPing a dude. I once ran a female Ogre Pirate (think an Ogre version of Kei Yuki or Queen Emeraldas) and thought I did an okay job of it.

I play the characters gender isn't an issue. I do have a problem with guys playing female characters as gutter skanks. (Explains why you dont have a woman and will most likely die a virgin in madukes basement)

Naw, man. I've known guys who are experts at dating, always have a girlfriend (and even ditch games from time to time because they're getting laid) and when they play girls...are complete gutter skanks, as you put it.

I'm lost. What is a "magical girl" in the HU universe?

Have you not ever heard of Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Scouts :?:
Or from the Tenchi-Muyo themed series, Pretty Sammy?

Eh...so it's merely a female character? If so, I don't see the issue.

Generally its a younger female that transforms from a 'normal' form into a 'magical girl form' and fights stuff. The genre is full of tropes, counter tropes, deconstructions, and all the rest.
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

I guess it just depends on the GM & the players then. I've run adult female characters before and done moderately well RPing them, but I think it would be pretty challenging to successfully RP a teenage female character..

The on-line comic 'MegaTokyo' has a sort of anti-hero magical girl character. Who's main power so for seams to be stealing things. And she is also keeping a shrunk un-dead Zila as a pet.

Zila be the name for godzila relatives in MT.
