Okay, so I'll say it right now: This is my favorite conventional fighter of the Robotech series. I also added a bunch of original artwork.

Interesting approach.

This is one of those designs that could arguably be based on (or a heavily re-manufactured version) of the Zentreadi Gnerl as they share a lot of similarities.

I'll have to double check when I get home, but I don't recall the fighter Robotech calls the Chimera actually having a name in This is Animation 10.

I'm not for sure either... this is one of those situations where I have to presume the person who translated it before me did a decent job... The capture (宇宙隊戦闘機) translates as "Space Corps fighter".

It's possible that it is referenced by that name somewhere else in the book. Or maybe this is from the line drawing sheet in My Anime, June 1984? (I have This is Animation 10, but no copy of My Anime, June 1984... can any one shed some light on this?)

If this is not the case, where the hell did the Chimera name come from? (Wishing I took Japanese now, instead of German. I picked the wrong Axis power.)

I'll have to check when I get off work... right now, I'm screwing around on my lunch break. I did a translation of the This is Animation 10: Southern Cross book a while back when Colonel Wolfe (rightly) insisted it wasn't fair of me to be quite so critical of the show's creators without studying their work more carefully, and I'm like 99% sure that fighter doesn't have a name in the few published sources for Southern Cross.

One of the things I remember very clearly from doing TIA 10 and the My Anime issues is that very few of the designs of the series have actual names. Almost all of them have genuinely unhelpful boilerplate titles like "<Name of Unit> Robot" or just "<Planet> Ship". The only designs that got unique, distinctive names were the ones used by the divisions that the principal characters belong to (the ATAC's Spartas, TASC's Logan and Auroran, and GMP's Garm*), the Zor Bioroid and the "Biover" hover platform, and the most common background fighter, the Sylphid (sometimes translated "Shrewfield"). Well, and the elaborate Arming Doublet body armor the Southern Cross Army is so fond of.


* Yes, it's named for the mythological dog that guards Hel in Norse mythology.

Probably the "1st Edition" of the Robotech RPG... which is where the vast majority of the Southern Cross units got proper names for the first time. If not there, then the uRRG or another fan site is the most likely guess.

In the first edition RPG, it was the Corsair III (which I referenced in the prototype version).

The Chimera name is from the uRRG. Chimera is what either Peter Walker or Pieter Thomassen thought they translated from the OSM. However, I can not make any claims to how good their Japanese was, and this was well before Google Translate.

Indeed. It's my SC/UEDF non-varitech fighter of choice. It's a real BUF(Big Ugly ####er) that reminds me of the Republic Thunderbolt and the German FW fighter designs.

On review of the book, I can't imagine where they would've got that name for it... it's only ever referred to twice, and on both occasions it's simply "Space Corps Fighter". My guess would be, based on their particular choice of names for the units of Southern Cross that were originally nameless, that their aim was to artificially impose a mythology-based convention to vehicles and mecha developed on Earth.

However, I can not make any claims to how good their Japanese was, and this was well before Google Translate.

In my experience, Google Translate tends to make things worse... not better.

This fighter is kinda the big-ass muscle bound red-neck who shows up at your party who has the "I just came here to drink beer, fight and f#@$ fat chicks" attitude. lol.
