When writing campaigns, what do you use?

Does anyone use Scrivener when writing their campaigns?

If not, what do you use?

May The Force be with you always.

Mostly Word. My most recent work has been in Evernote though. I like being able to add to it on my smart phone.

Thumbs up to Evernote. Easy to organize, easy to find stuff, I also write on my phone during my lunch break, and upon rare occasions where I need to share a note or a picture with some or all of my players, it has all my google contacts instead of me copying and pasting into an email. And when something went wrong with my registry recently and I could no longer download Evernote to my computer (discovered the problem in the middle of an update :( ), it was all backed up on the web for me.

Mostly just an old fashioned notepad/workbook, although I have a growing collection of pre-made armor sheets for MDC etc (So far all the CS PA and Bots, and a few others) so I just print as necessary.

Mostly OpenOffice. Before that, Word. Before that, Word Perfect, before that, pen & paper. Still use pen & paper, sometime to rough some idea out, sometimes to work out some 'scratch' mathematics. It's often easier for me to scribble something down on paper before I translate it onto a computer. My brain thinks to damn fast at times. lol

Word if I am on my computer, and various notebooks if not. (I actually use both, the note book is for quick notes, that will get sorted and placed in the various word docs later).
The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

I would only use Scrivener if I was going to write a book or finished product. Just for game notes and campaign info. Any word processoring software or pencil and paper will do. The only person going to be reading it is you.

This thread has been really interesting to me just to see what people are using to write campaigns.
I've been using Word, but I'm going to go look up all of the other options mentioned here and see how they compare. So thanks :).

For me, I enjoy sharing what i write, so I like it to be in some sort of format that is both easy for me and others to read.

What Damian said, notepad and pencil. I stock up on notebooks when stores have 10 cent or 1 cent deals around back to school time, I'll buy 20 or 30 and every time I run a new game, I just start a new book, as a player or GM, and keep it all together. I'm usually running or involved in multiple campaigns, so it makes it simple to transport. Occasionally I'll use word to type something up, but I do use Excel a lot for character sheets for PC's and NPC's.

It's pretty rare I commit campaign ideas to any sort of permanence, keeping it mostly in my head, largely because gaming is an interactive thing, and players will most often derail or otherwise fundamentally alter any long term plan without a great deal of flexibility, which committing down will reduce.

At times I'll design short encounter bits, a planned fight, or an area to explore, which is normally just OpenOffice, or whatever wordprocesser I have handy, often so I can share it to the players before hand (or during) or keep that information for later use either in that or another game. At times just a note book page and pen, or a supplemented map from MS paint or whatever.
Getting a mage to tell you where the hydra is...10,000 gold
Hiring a summoner... 40,000 gold
Hiring one hundred 10th level mercenaries... 98,567 gold
Giving a hydra skull to your necromancer... priceless

Notepad and pencil.

I'm just writing down general notes and outlines. Anything more than that and I'm just wasting my time. I have tricky PC's. Fast and loose and keep the story in you head.

I keep all my ideas on my Google docs account, then I can get to it from anywhere. :)

I'm currently using Realm Works. It is pricey I suppose, but it keeps everything in order when running my games.

LibreOffice. It's free and it also has a database for when you feel like getting extra organised.

Brain gets the start. Anything after that is based on what the players do.

Paper or word is used to do any changes or any notes I need in case I think of a twist I already prepared for.

I typically make it up as we go along, I have typically 1 or 2 main ideals or moral questions i want them to confront in the context of the whole campaign, but otherwise i let them decide where and what they wish to do, and just describe the scenery along the choices they make. Along with devilish giggles and grins, when they go to make choices just to keep them guessing.

Notepad. Occasionally Wordpad.

Never needed anything more complicated.

My problem isnt formatting text, its figuring out the words to describe whats going on in my brain. That usually requires a thesaurus and sometimes a dictionary. Once in a while I'll steal images from the web to help reduce the amount of explaining I need in text format.

Mostly notebook, although I will be using EverNote for brainstorming & notes to import, so I can work on stuff when out & about via phone or tablet (and work computer when it's slow)

Using the game-journal function of Roll20 quite nicely. Let me import a Word doc of House Rules & common clarifications (like the magic effects from LLines that the RUE missed the first time, and my group - player or co-player alike - seem to ask for).

I usually just draw pics and use roll20.net to map out stuff. I agree w/ the derailment comment. I just try to have the inspirational skeletons available to me so I pull stuff out of my arse. ;)

What exactly are you guys writing out?
