Can you train a Familiar to activate a Talisman?
That's right. I went there.
Put a Talisman on something like a collar, and I don't see why you couldn't train the animal to activate the item on command. I'm thinking invisibility, armor of Ithan, etc would be great.
What do the rest of you think?

I would say yes, especially if using the TtGD rules with improved familiars (and familiar with intelligence). I think it would work best if you personally crafted the talisman, and designed it to be easy for the familiar to activate, however.

The Nightbane game book Through the Glass Darkly.
About a quarter to a third of the book text is dealing with magic. Having some text about living magic, spell creation and modification, Familler upgrades, Charm making, new magic schools w/ assosiated CC's and spells and text about how culture the style/styling of the magic.
EDIT: There is additional familiar upgrades with in Rifter 21.

Re: Can you train a Familiar to activate a Talisman?
In theory there is nothing in the Talisman spell that puts a specific level or quality of intelligence to activate it. Just that it creates an item that can be used to cast the spell.
This leaves the matter of what can and can not use a talisman firmly up to the discretion of the individual GM.

The rules are not a bludgeon with which to hammer a character into a game. They are a guide to how a group of friends can get together to weave a collective story that entertains everyone involved. We forget that at our peril.

Ahh, thanks. I usually index my books by the world first so without the NB if front, I didn't recognize it. I should have remembered it, I'm using it in a power class I'm building.
And I buy and large would allow it al well, it is in keeping with the concept of a wizard's assistant.

Re: Can you train a Familiar to activate a Talisman?
I would say maybe. If I remember correctly talisman require word activation. So if you familiar can speak then yes.
Re: Can you train a Familiar to activate a Talisman?
The spell does not specify how the spells are activated once the talisman is charged. It could be a word, gesture, intent, or some other activating action. Negotiate with your GM.
