What happens if an NPC, player or villain casts a spell on someone who is asleep?
Do they get a save?
What if the spell is some kind of mind control spell like "Trance" and the caster wakes them up?
Does the caster know their spell as worked before they wake up their victim?

Yes, the spell does whatever the spell would normally do
No, there's nothing that indicates if a spell worked or not.
If you mind control a sleeping person, they remain asleep until woken up. being mind controlled doesn't wake them up.
Truthfully, a lot of your questions can be answered by "The spells do exactly what they say they do. no more, no less."
If you mind controlled a sleeping person, unless you plan to wake them up soon somehow, you probablly wasted your time.

Re: Casting on those asleep
It is kind of sad that there is no spell casting advantage to casting a spell on someone if you catch them sleeping.
I guess in the extreme one could cast the same spell over and over again hoping that they fail one of their multiple saves before waking them up to control them with the likes of "Charm," "Domination" or "Trance."

Re: Casting on those asleep
The same thing happens as if they are awake, they get what save the spell text says they get.
Mind Control powers: Same save as if awake. if the caster wakes them up then they will ether be mad at being woken up (having save vs the mind control) or will end up awake under the influance of the mind control.
The advantage the char trying to mind control the other char has is that if the power/spell requires them to touch the target, then they don't have to roll to strike. And can make multiple attempts.
