Let's just consider, the Zentraedi were really around to fight and compete against other Zentraedi like armies, like the Meltlandi.
As anyone done a Z v. M game?

Re: Zentraedi v. Meltlandi
In the Robotech continua, the Meltandi were a smaller, elite corps with a concentration on powered armor tactics, and they tended to use mid-weight command vessels.
In the original Macross(or rather the DYRL continua where we see them actually using completely different ships), they seem to be more balanced equipment-wise and ship-class wise with at least two identifiable carrier-types. However, the Meltandi units also looked faster, suggesting greater agility, albeit at the cost. of armor protection.
In both cases it would be numbers(Zentraedi) against tactical maneuverability. A Female Power Armor might be worth twenty or more Regults in the field, but the average Zentraedi unit can field thousands of them to the smaller numbers of MPAs. The best bet of the females to win is to deliver headhunter strikes against the Zentraedi command and control , and strike at the weak points of the big carriers, before the Meltandi can be overwhelmed by the sheer weight of firepower the Zentraedi can bring up.

Re: Zentraedi v. Meltlandi
No I haven't played in/GM such a game of ZvM.
Though I like to think that (in RT, if not Macross-OSM) given Gloval's history lesson the Zentreadi where created at their approx. size because that was the norm for alien races the Masters/Zor had encountered. The Zentreadi DID have a supposed hands off micronian worlds policy, which given known aliens in the franchise would leave them with no one to interact with without some explanations for breaking that policy (Invid evolutionary path could see them grown/shrink as needed, Haydonites aren't organic so don't count, possibly even the Spherians if they can control the amount of material the use for their body shells, but the Praxians/Garudans/Carbonites are likely out).
Gloval's "history" summary (and dialogue in TRM) does leave room for Zentreadi to have various evolutionary cousins given there was a conflict in the distant past that involved a war among the themselves which lead to the current evolution of the Zentreadi. Given dialogue in TRM likely some micronized evolutionary cousins exist to, which if they are true MZ then there could be other off-shoots out there related to the Zentreadi (giant or otherwise).

Maybe "prehistoric" "megafauna" worlds are the norm? That makes the human-sized Local Group races more special.

Re: Zentraedi v. Meltlandi
depending on the definition used for micronian, that policy might not protect karbarra, garuda, or Peryton. given how the zents use the term in the show, it would however protect Praxis, as they are effectively indistinguishable from tirolians and humans.
that policy may have been meant as an added protection to keep the zents from invading tirolian colonies, or worlds that hold other 'space human' civilizations. which are presumably related in some fashion to why tirol, praxis, and earth all had genetically related species.
