Traveling in the Astral Plane - penalty/bonus accumulation
Pg 39 of Between the Shadows gives a -5% penalty for "hopelessly lost" and a +10% bonus for "fairly certain". There are no modifiers for the middle 'uncertain'.
This is a gorgeous idea which sadly other writeups of AP (like Rifts, both editions) seem to lack. Without a mechanic like this it doesn't even make sense to have three different result categories.
What I'm wondering is: would you only apply that to just the next roll, or let these build up for ALL future rolls?
IE "fairly certain" next roll is 51 (usually "uncertain") but due to +10% it puts you at 61 for "fairly certain" and you get the +10% again...
Should your next (third) roll be +20%? Or just +10% again?

There's a reason I use Between the Shadows as a Megaversal resource.Axelmania wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 12:05 pm Pg 39 of Between the Shadows gives a -5% penalty for "hopelessly lost" and a +10% bonus for "fairly certain". There are no modifiers for the middle 'uncertain'.

My ruling has been not to stack the bonus. They get the bonus only on the next roll.
I have had players fluctuate between hopelessly lost and fairly certain in the same trip.

Agreed, in fact I always wished that books like this, regardless of what property it is for, were done with more care to be megaversal.Marcethus wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 2:40 amThere's a reason I use Between the Shadows as a Megaversal resource.Axelmania wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 12:05 pm Pg 39 of Between the Shadows gives a -5% penalty for "hopelessly lost" and a +10% bonus for "fairly certain". I agree though that it doesn't seem like they should stack but I suppose you could with each success adding a bonus and a failure reducing the bonus.

It's amusing that two Nightbane books, Between the Shadows & Through the Glass Darkly, are megaversal resources,

When Through the Glass Darkly came out I didn't like it that much but over time I have really used sections of the book to add magic to Rifts and even HU. I especially like ch 7 on magical sites. I have even used this as a template for some things in the 3 Galaxies.

As soon as I bought and read those two books I incorporated them megaversally. I got Between the Shadows and Rifts: Psyscape around the same time. And Psyscape refrences NB's BtS. So that helped me decide to incorporate.

The one thing I have never used is the Dreamstream. I don't hate it or anything but I have never had players request it and in NB it feels superfluous with the Nightlands and astral plain while in a Rifts or Phase World it can feel really overpowered.
If I was running a regular BTS game that might be the one setting that I could see it being kind of interesting, especially if you add some dark gods that can enter your dreams.

The closest I have come to using the Dreamstream was a Living Nightmare NPC that never saw use.Warshield73 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 26, 2025 12:22 pm The one thing I have never used is the Dreamstream. I agree with you. In NB it feels too much; since I generally combine BTS2 with NB I hadn't thought of using the 'Stream in BTS. Granted that's because BTS2 feels incomplete.

Yeah BTS 1e wasn't all that complete either. The main thing I used it for was to expand on magic in Rifts and for some additional lore skills in Rifts and HU as I run that with a lot more magic.

Atleast BTS1 had the magic that 2e lacks. I was looking forward to seeing the Arcanist updated.
