Rifts on the Web

Unread post by Lord Cabe »

Ten years ago, my Rifts game group disbanded with the majority of us graduating from college. I was never able to coordinate another group. There was always a problem with finding players and the right time for everyone to meet and twists of real life made things difficult. It was then that I realized perhaps other people were like me. They loved Rifts, but just couldn’t find others when they actually had the time to play. I decided to use the beauty of the internet to connect Rifts gamers together and created RiftsMUD. It is an online gaming community that has been running for over eight years. It was custom coded specially to hold that special Rifts theme feel. Today it has over 50 races, over 50 OCCs, over 150 skills, over 100 magic spells, psionics, bionics, abilities, and countless location settings.
If you have trouble finding a gaming group, consider trying us, the only Rifts game that has been going on for players 24 hours of the day, seven days of the week, for years. If you have a game group, but just cannot get enough of Rifts, you are welcome to join us too. We are just players loving the game like yourself.

You can find the community at: http://www.riftsmud.com.

If you try it, let me know what you think. We are always working to improve. I can be reached at Splynncryth@riftsmud.com.

...the only Rifts game that has been going on...

Yes, there are various legal wacking stick reasons for that. I was interested in starting a computer moderated game myself, years back well before any sniff of the movie. I was told by Maryann, No, it would reveal vital palladium IP. I'm interested as to how Rifts mud, which reveals its share of IP, gets around that. I even asked once on the forum, and was told briefly of some arrangement.

Well the game has survived this long for various reasons. The largest is that we have worked long-standing with Palladium's Internet policies. We give Palladium full credit for their game system. The game is self-contained by a telnet login and thus does not offer any easily downloadable information concerning the game system. Things like dice rolls, weapon ranges, damages, etc. are handled by the game driver. Thus a person playing RiftsMUD cannot take what they learned from the game and suddenly do tabletop play without the aid of Palladium's books. In fact at least once a month, we steer a new player to the Rifts Megaverse to Palladium or a distributer for book purchases. We never charge for game play. In fact, the server hosting has been my personal expense for all these years.
Basically, we never look for profit or to harm Palladium in any way. We love Palladium and its game systems. We are just players who love playing and want to play more. Thus, I left my previous post here to see if others wanted to join us in role-play too.

Can you recommend a mud-client? Especially a free one?

Those are pretty easy conditions to forfil, but rather than even a hint at them I was outright told no. There was no option of 'no, but if you do this and this and this you can'. It was just a flat out no.

I get the feeling that they said yes to your mud, latter realised its probably has some vague legal ramifications (pal hates even a vague 'threat'), but didn't have the heart to cut you off. However, any new endevours get cut off with the hard legal word without a second thought, even if its just like a play by post with some comp moding.

Your in a good position...but the movie could stir up the big money if it happens, which could stir up probs.

There are several mud clients out there. Fire Client is one. It can be found at www.firebolt.com. Zmud is possibly the most popular and gives you a thirty day free trial. That can be found at www.zuggsoft.com. Personally, I am very old school and just use *gasp* telnet. You might want to try a Google search for more options.

Sorry to hear about your 'no'. I can understand that being disappointing. Frankly, I hope the movie does the big money. Palladium has done an incredible job with the game system and the movie could draw in a new wave of players. They deserve success. I doubt if it causes problems for my game community, but if it does I am sure proper resolutions can be found.

RavenShadow wrote:The game as Mattbaby said is not newbie friendly. Then again I hated Zelda on my Commadore 64 (holy cow that dates me), and I have never been a fan of MUD's.

I am not completely ready to give up yet. It requires a bit of patience, and for one that just wants to sit down and game, this is not the choice unless you have a character ready. Is their a possibility of eventually the first few times you login you could play a pre-made character to get a better feel for your game without jumping through the hoops of fire to get going?

No, the game is not always newbie friendly. We have packed a ton of detail into it and it can unfortunately be difficult at times. For example, if you login the first time and the starting area you have picked is going through 'night time' or a large storm. It is always helpful to find an experienced player to show you the ropes. The place can be quite deadly in spots. But let's face it, Rifts Earth has never been a happy paradise.

One of the reasons I left my post here is so more Rifts experienced players than 'mud experienced' ones can see the game and give feedback to make the game more enjoyable. Please feel free to email me any comments you have or post on our forum. That is a great idea about the ready-made characters for newbies. We are putting together a version 3.0 and I will make sure to include that! Thank you.

If you want to make another character, do you have to use a new name?

If you are level 1 and suicide the character, you can make a character with the same name. This allows you to try out different racial and character class combinations. However if you advance and are slain, that character and name are considered lost.

Anyone who is having a problem figuring out how to play RM(RiftsMUD), send me a private message on the RM message boards, I will be more than happy to coach you through whatever questions you have about, character setup, roleplay, actions and controls, conduct and rules, or anything else that comes to mind. As Lord Cabe can tell you I (Percivil) have been playing RM for a very long time, and though I seem to cause more work for him than anything :-D, I know what I am doing.

I’d give anything to play that game you made again. Was some of the best gaming I had as a kid.

If you were in existence when I was in college, I would be all over this.
