Star Metal...

Unread post by pblackcrow »

I have resently found my old Conan the Adventure cartoon tapes.

I am considering using the ideas of the snake men and the star metal in a PBEM game or by chat on the yahoo groups. Which ever's more conveniant for everyone. Though, if chat, I would advise a microphone/head sets.

Play 3rd-4th level characters. I will give you guys gold and a chance to shop for whatever you might want. You will all be starting in the kingdom of wisdom. And backgrounds will definetly be apprisiated.

I will shall post something on the group a bit later.

For those of you who haven't seen the cartoon...Set (the snake god, not the Egyptian God) ruled the Earth tyrannically. All the Earth magicians at the time united their strength and banished him into another dimension. Set is an evil serpent God who was, for most of the episodes, trapped in the Abyss. His servants, Wrath-Amon and the serpent men, were trying to free him by collecting Starmetal, turning it evil, and creating magical disks. When there were seven pyramids with star-metal discs on the tops of the pyramids, Set was freed from the Abyss.

The Serpent Men are Set's henchmen. They can take the form of humans, but if they got too close to Star Metal, their disguise is ruined and they were revealed as the reptilian beings they truly are. If tempered star metal cuts them, then they are sent back to the Abyss, all that stays behind is their clothing, etc.

I going to use some of the very basic elements. Metiorites hit the planet on the summer solstice. Blacksmiths, alcemists, etc find it and make weapons, horseshoes, etc out of some of it. And the serpent men are thought to all be dead.

Forget the crummy cartoon, get a good collection of short stories and read Robert E Howard's The Shadow Kingdom. It's the original source for ALL the serpent-man material found throughout fantasy... If you've not read the Conan stuff, you'd be well inspired to do so too ... Just make sure you read the true Howard stuff and not the countless pastiches ... a 2 volume collection of it has been published in 2002 by Millenium in their Masters of Fantasy collection, but I fear that is a british print, not very available in the states. The other option is the 8 volume edition committed by lin carter and sprague de camp, but it contains a lot of inferior and adulterated material.

Any time, it's up to you guys to decide time, but if it's going to be a PBe-M game you don't have to worry about the time.

Since when is the Egyptian Seth a serpent god?
sure, both are gods of evil, and Stygia *is* inspired in part from Egypt.
But even in Howard's works, the Serpent did not have that much to do with its egyptian namesake, and I fear that the cartoon being just went farther away.

yeah ... I know ... seems not everybody does, though.

I'll not ask to be in your game, I'm too much of a Howard fan to take the risk of playing in a modified world.

 Get real...I am pagan. :D Well, sort of...I believe in God/Ra/YHWY/whatever he is called as beinf the creator, but I also believe in other Gods as the many aspects of the one.

I don't wish to get into a polytheological discussion or debate on here. So, except it and move on. Or post in here about wanting to play or not play.
