:? I'm confused about Roll Percentile(01-100), how do you use 2 twenty sided die, I mean I know One is the tens and the other is the ones, but how does that work. What would 2 20s equal? a 4 and a 4 would equal 44 right? But what would you do about a 15 and a 7, I don't understand. Please help.

There are 2 general ways to do percentile... 100 sided dice (which are fun), or a pair of 10 sided.

A 10 sided die either can have the numbers 0-9 on it, or 00-90 by tens. In either case, one is the "high" die and one is the "low" die. The high die indicates the tens place, and low the ones place. So if you roll a 5 on your high die, and a 9 on your low, it's 59. If you use two dice that are numbers by tens, a 50 and a 90 would also give you 59. The third combination is to use one each, one numbered by tens and one numbered by ones. In that case, a 50 and a 9 would give you 59.

It is easyer to use 2 d10s for % rolls if you have a set of d10's made for % rolls.

One is a normal D10 with the numrales 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 0.

With the other D10 with the numrales 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 00.

When the '00' is rolled alonge with rolling a '0', it stands for 100%
(not zero%)

..It's interesting that you should bring this up; only the old gamers are likely to remember the original D20's were numbered 1-10 twice. You were supposed to use a colored pencil to fill in half the numbers; then you would declare which number set (colored/uncolored) was high, and add ten to that set on a roll for numbers between 1-20.

..But it's D10's that you use for perecentile, as explained above.

Well, I also remember when people would use a d10 and a d6 at the same time. If the d6 ended up frmo 1-3, you were on the scale from 1-10. IF it was 4-6, you went 11-20.

before we had proper dice (besides d6) we used little plastic wheels with the numbers on 'em, spinned them and then read where the stopper was. just like roulette. that was back in '87.

cheers, Vid

What a difference seven years make. By the time I started gaming, twenty-siders existed. Heck, dice "technology" seems to have experienced quite the development as two years later actual d100's debuted.

..There were D20's in the 70's, one came with the original DnD boxed set; it was the one I mentioned above, that was only numbered 1-10 twice.

Glork wrote:That sounds unnecessarily awkward! I started gaming around that time, and as I remember, we had d4, d6, d8 and d10.

The all time favorite way to roll percentile dice though, is still the good ol' d100 (although you need a magnifying glass to see the result...)

well, all the dice we know (except the clumsy d100) existed, but the question was wether we get them here in Austria or not!! also, back then dice were expensive (wew, that sounds strange, but they really were!).

cheers, Vid

If you don't have a pair of 10 siders, you can roll 2 20-siders. If it is a double didgit number, just use the second number.
