poor man's variable camo armor
hi everyone,
I just bought Mercenaries, and I saw the entry for Naruni's Camouflage sheets.
Do you think it's possible to use these sheets like camouflage ponchos? Do you think they can be tailored into things? Opinions please.
The material is mega damage too, so it might offer some protection.

Can make them any size. I use it for Ghillie suits, lots of small strips to give it 3d.

Yes, no problem there.

well, just remember that little part about ANY damage to the cloth material renders it all useless for camoflauge.

I would use it to make a cape myself..its all about style. But the strips idea makes it less likely to be damaged.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't those sheets need a power source ? where would you plug them all into the Glitter boy

There is no need for a power supply mentioned in the book. Do note that the Ghillie suit would probably cost more as it would be a custom job from Naruni. I also noticed that if your completely covered you can still see out if you have the sheets properly connected to your helmets pickups.

??? Um for one thing the entire camoflauge sheet is designed so that it appears as a hill or shrub or whatever is predominant in the area. So there is zero need to "3D" the sheet. Also if you read the discription it states that any movement under the sheet negates it's effectivness. Many small strips have huge chances of being disturbed by even small movements, and with the strips even small gusts of wind would make them fly around thus once again negating the effect of the camoflauge sheet. Congratulations...you've just ruined a 10,000 credit sheet!!

Let try typing it straight from the book.
Camouflage Sheets
These sheets are made of special fiber-optics designed to completely blend with the surrounding terrain. Enough of these sheets can make a tank or a giant robot look like part of a hill or a forest. As long as the men and vehicles under the sheets remain motionless, the sophisticated chameleon fibers of the sheets will imitate the area's colors and take the appearance of an inanimate object. The sheets also offer some protections (omitted to avoid CWI), but as soon as they take damage, the chameleon effect is dissipated. The sheet also has micro-sensors that allow vehicles or armor helmets to see through them, provided they are properly connected. blah, blah
Translation if you are against a hill it has the colors and basically has the pattern of the hill it does not become a seperate earthen mound or and extra monolith at Stone Henge. The reason that it says the people under it must remain still is because if they move...well when is the last time you saw a mountain side ripple or a portion of a forrest push out of the rest of it? If it's in Ghillie suit style strips and you are in vegitation then you won't have a problem, becuase Ghillie is designed to simulate brush anyway. Hell even in shadows or standing in a forest you shouldn't have a problem unless the suit camoflauges as something that shouldn't move.
If you read it again the section that states,
Refers to the previous sentence which saysAs long as the men and vehicles under the sheets remain motionless, the sophisticated chameleon fibers of the sheets will imitate the area's colors and take the appearance of an inanimate object.
Emphasis on tank or giant robot. A man sized target could likely move. Do you think BDU's (Battle Dress Uniform) Camo patterns work because they blend into the environment? NO they work because they break up the pattern of a person. That is why the Marines new digitals work so well and why the insane USAF blue BDUs still work. Not because oh my gawd he walked into the forest and suddenly I lost him. Oh no wait there he is that tree. Basically on the human sized scale all the camo sheets have to do is mimic the colors not the inanimate object.Enough of these sheets can make a tank or a giant robot look like part of a hill or a forest.

I know what the book states. I also know how camoflauge works. And have worn my share of it. I'm not disputing the idea of camoflauge...I'm disputing fiber optics. So explain a few things for me.....
If the material is made of fiber optics, which is designed to show the color of terrain on one side of it while allowing the user to see through the opposite side of it...how is strips of it going to work?? I mean at what point would the strips just start showing the color of other strips? Or the user? Ghillial suits are made of Hundreds of such strips. A blanket is a single item. Perhaps you don't quite realize how fiber optics work. The fiber optics are laced...like the threads in cloth... from one edge of the blanket to the other. They allow light to go through and do indeed show along thier entire length the color of the area near them. Hence at any distance besides touch it would show up as what would look like grass, a bush, etc. (Which is why you wouldn't need the "3-D" effect) The "Edges" of the blanket is where the ends of the fiber optics would be, and thats how it would work to camoflauge someone under them. Hundreds of strips next to each other would just show the color of the strips...or worse the user. Granted a very muddled color variation would show up due to all the fiber optics...but those strips wouldn't be able to show the predominant area of foliage...because to the strips the predominant area would be the guy they're attached to. You can't paint or die fiberoptics because they are glass or similar material, and that would defeat the purpose they are employed for in the blanket, so at best you'd have a guy that was partially the color of the surrounding area, while the largest part of his back/front/whatever would just show the guy. What? You think the fiber optics are 1/8th of an inch long and travle from one side of the blanket to the other?? If that was true it would just show the person under it!! Kinda like a big window. A ghilile suit is one form of camoflauge. A camoflauge sheet is a high tech (and expensive one at that) version of camoflauge. Unfortunatly they are NOT an interchangable version.

Very good!! A thinker!! I like it!!
Well the only problem I could think of is still how fiber optics works. The ends of the fibers have to be exposed, and would be along the edges of the final product, whatever it was. Think of it like a camera, it has to "see" what it's trying to imitate, at least color wise. In order for that color/pattern to show along the length of the fiber optic at least. Those little strips are not conected to each other, so neither is the fiber optics. Thus each individual strip would just show whatever is next to it ALONG THE EDGES of the strips. Picture if you will a 2 dimensional painting that looks very real, giving the illusion of it being 3 dimensional. We've all seen them ocasionally. That's the premise behind those blankets. Cutting it into strips kinda defeats how fiber optics works. It wouldn't make a fluid full image, instead hundreds of differant images that would probably be so strange looking as to cause peaple to look at it. It would stand out, not blend in.
Now if you had the Neuroni make a coat specifically designed to imitate the body armor version's abilities, that would be differant. It's all a mater of how it's sopposed to work, and specific sientific principles of light and light travle.

What do you mean you've worn your fair share of it? Were you are you in the military? What branch? What MOS/AFSC?
If the material is made of fiber optics, which is designed to show the color of terrain on one side of it while allowing the user to see through the opposite side of it
read it again it says "The sheet also has micro-sensors that allow vehicles or armor helmets to see through them, provided they are properly connected." (I like how you trimmed that part off) It doesn't say you can see through the inside. The inside likely takes on the same colors as the out. It is probably those said micro-sensors all over it that determine the pattern.
...how is strips of it going to work?? I mean at what point would the strips just start showing the color of other strips? Or the user?
Probably just like..."Enough of these sheets can make a tank or a giant robot look like part of a hill or a forest. "
Where does it state that these sheets are attached. No where it is a giant robot or vehicle Ghillie Suit.
Ghillial suits are made of Hundreds of such strips.
It's spelled Ghillie (prop.) or Gilly (modern) they were developed by Scottish grounds keeper to catch poachers and later used in WWI by snipers
A blanket is a single item.
I know this is nitpicking but they aren't blankets their sheets which may infer that they are thin.
Perhaps you don't quite realize how fiber optics work.
Maybe you don't understand fiber optics. Do you know the difference between multi-mode and single-mode? Do you know which is better, I'll give you a clue multi uses multiple light sources, single uses one. Pop quiz which one?
The fiber optics are laced...like the threads in cloth... from one edge of the blanket to the other. They allow light to go through and do indeed show along thier entire length the color of the area near them. Hence at any distance besides touch it would show up as what would look like grass, a bush, etc. (Which is why you wouldn't need the "3-D" effect)
If the fibers are laid out like you describe you certainly would need a 3-D effect because each strand would be showing the same color along its entire length without variation. If it is as the book describes there are probably billions of fiber optics that work with a display processor and each fiber optic only has it's tip on the outside of the SHEET to allow each micrometer to have variances possibly placing an actual picture of the surrounding on the sheet rather than just color.
The "Edges" of the blanket is where the ends of the fiber optics would be, and thats how it would work to camoflauge someone under them.
How do the edges of the SHEET make it work? If that were so when you covered a tank or giant robot under it like the book says it wouldn't work because the edges would touch the tank and the other sheets. It's more likely, as I stated before that the sheets use the same sensors that Helmets and vehicles can use to see out of to take samples of the surroundings.
Hundreds of strips next to each other would just show the color of the strips...or worse the user. Granted a very muddled color variation would show up due to all the fiber optics...but those strips wouldn't be able to show the predominant area of foliage...because to the strips the predominant area would be the guy they're attached to.
As mentioned above then the tank or giant vehicle couldn't work. There is likely a computer system in the sheets.
You can't paint or die fiberoptics because they are glass or similar material, and that would defeat the purpose they are employed for in the blanket, so at best you'd have a guy that was partially the color of the surrounding area, while the largest part of his back/front/whatever would just show the guy.
They were fiber glass however it was found that the fiberglass was too fragile. Now they are made from plastics however they still need to turn 360 degrees just to make a 90 degree turn.
Uh. I know what size fiber optics are I work with them. I also work with a GPN-22, GPN-21, TPN-42, and NEXRAD. I know how to work on a TPN-75 and all the sub equipment. I also know that anything in the game is subject to interpretation by the GM and players. My group simply sees the sheets as a new fabric like material which can be used in various ways like other fabrics. If your willing to pay the Naruni the money I'm sure they can do it. I never said that my character made it I said you could get it in any size sheet if you paid the Naruni and as such you could likely also have them form it into any type of clothing. Oh my AFSC is 2E051 is yours I-d1-0t or 3P051

At least, that's how I've seen RL variable camouflage concepts described.
Thats most likely it as I said in the mild toasting it is likely the very sensors that the sheet uses to allow vehicles and helmets properly linked to it to see out that it uses to program the camo. You really wouldn't need the phototransmitters you could just have the FI aligned like I said with its tips against the surface of the sheet.
Dang I forgot to explain to him that FI can't have it's entire length unsheathed asside from only being able to show one color at a time. The FI rely on the sheath to keep the light in reflecting it back into the core until it reaches it's destination.
Although I figure the Naruni could just do it as a giant flexible monitor.

USMC, 1989-1991, Primary based out of MAG 11 Headquarters, El Toro CA, plus other bases too many to care to list. Trained as a 6022, with secondary training in about 15 other fields from supply to artillery. (Directly before the first Desert Storm the military was going to mothball all A-6 aircraft so my MOS was being deleated. I had the joy of jumping from base to base for alternative training in so many things it was kinda silly. Then Desert Sheild happened and *poof*...all A-6's are cool again and it was back to wrench turning. Now A-6's are STILL in service. Another fine example of a typical SNAFU.

It's spelled Ghillie (prop.) or Gilly (modern) they were developed by
Scottish grounds keeper to catch poachers and later used in WWI by snipers
Gee you give english AND history lesons. Thanks so much.A blanket is a single item.
I know this is nitpicking but they aren't blankets their sheets which may infer that they are thin.
Well a "sheet" of drywall can be 1 inch thick. A "Sheet" of particle board can be inches thick. Now that is nitpicking.
Don't know and don't care. Not my specialty. Couldn't build a car from a pile of iron ore either, but I know how one is sopposed to work in theory and practice. I know the theory of fiber optics, and your idea of the Ghillial suit doesn't seem to match up.Perhaps you don't quite realize how fiber optics work.
Maybe you don't understand fiber optics. Do you know the difference between multi-mode and single-mode? Do you know which is better, I'll give you a clue multi uses multiple light sources, single uses one. Pop quiz which one?The fiber optics are laced...like the threads in cloth... from one edge of the blanket to the other.
It's more likely, as I stated before that the sheets use the same sensors that Helmets and vehicles can use to see out of to take samples of the surroundings.Hundreds of strips next to each other would just show the color of the strips...or worse the user.
Interesting theory. So how much power would all those processors and computer chips require to work? Just curious because the "sheet" discribed in the book doesn't require any. The way I stated it was taking this into a bit of account. Colors are just light. And light can travel down fiber optics without an outside powersource.
Um...was there a point to this? Didn't know this was part of the discussion.
Good for you. You work with fiber optics, how nice. If the Naruni was capable of making your average panties out of camoflauge material don't you think it would have made it into one of the books? Seems like it should have been introduced at least in the Naruni book that was recently released...let me check. ......Nope. Not there. Now my original post was in response to your stating that you "Use it for Ghillie suits, lots of small strips to give it 3d." If you have an image, that looks "like a hill or shrubbery or whatever, then answer me this...Why would you need the 3D effect provided by a ghillie suit's plethora of strips? Also you at least implyed in your post that YOU sliced the sheets yourself, now your stating that you would have Naruni do it. These are two seperate things. Based on your very first post I easily pictured some neanderthal using his handy vibro-knife and going to town on a 10,000 credit sheet of fiber-optics. Not good!! Hence MY very first post!Zer0 Kay wrote:So get out of my face or post more politely. I've been on the board since it's original incarnation though my current profile for this current version doesn't show it. I've had great debates with Dr. Doom III (wish he was around to talk to). What I'm saying is if you were rude to me because my post # isn't as high as yours and that gives you some false sense of superiority then think again. Be polite and respect all posters. If you didn't mean it that way I appologize but you may want to consider how you word your posts.
posting.php?mode=quote&p=414955Gee so what? I too have argued with Dr. Doom III. Who cares? I don't pay much attention to post count as this is MY 3rd incarnation on these boards. My post count has never been very high because I only post when I have something I feel needs to be said. But mostly I just lurk. I feel superior to you because I am, not because of your stupid post count. So bite me!!
Gee, I tried to apologize if I was wrong, but I guess I wasn't your arrogant and make too many assumptions. I like how you use the word argue rather than debate like I did. I was going to flame you but decided it wasn't worth it. I'd bite, but you seem bitter maybe an inferiority complex?
No..you jumped down my throat assuming that I was picking on you due to some low post count complex that YOU brought up. Instead of explaining your first post you decided the prudent thing to do was jump down my throat. I word my posts as if the person I was responding too was standing directly in front of me. If I sound condesending then there is a reason for it. Mabey its because I actually disagree with what was stated for some reason. So perhaps YOU should watch how you post. If ya gots any ole questions just asks. I be happy to let ya know wa's on my mind bud.

Temporalmage I'm not even going to try to quote that damn long thing.
Marine eh? Cool. So how do you like the new digis?
The MPU would work by uh wireless networking yeah that's the ticket
"Where does it state that these sheets are attached? No where, it is a giant robot or vehicle Ghillie Suit." This wasn't all a question the first part was supposed to be the second was my take on how they said it.
Maybe it's solar powered, and it's natural state is black so at night it isn't that bad.
Naruni camo panties... I don't think there's much of a demand for it. What good are they if you can't find them to take em off?
Why Ghillie? Why not if it still works and you and your game master are happy with it who cares? I don't think I'd like to look like a shrub The Knights who say Nei may send Arthur to fetch me.
I said "Can make them any size. I use it for Ghillie suits, lots of small strips to give it 3d." I don't see anywhere in there where I said I made them.
Are you calling me Neanderthal (points finger at and glares...trying to look menacing).
Actually I was trying to jump down your throat for what I assumed was an insult and if you did mean the Neaderthal statement it was and the only reason I could think of since you don't know me is that you may consider that because your current incarnation has a higher post count that your better than me which you apparently don't. I did try to apologize if you didn't mean your post to be insulting when I typed "If you didn't mean it that way I apologize but you may want to consider how you word your posts. " and you went off on me so I made an assumption that you did mean it that way.
Aargh it doesn't matter I am sorry, and don't do the TI (Drill Sgt.) thing and say I know you are now apologize. I'm tired and I can see you are the type that is blunt and if you don't like something you insult it rather than just stating "I figured it worked this way ABC. How do you figure it works that way?" That may just be you and that is alright. If you don't like the Ghillie suit idea don't use it. If other people do they can it is a game, a sci-fi fantasy game at that. One shouldn't argue mechanics of how something works just the mechanics of how the game runs. Again sorry to jump down your throat.

All very logical ideas. I just make the assumption that the sheets would have to be linked somehow in order for them to make a pattern that seemlessly flowed with the surrounding terrain. Otherwise it would kinda stick out like a sore thumb. IE two halves of a tree next to each other when it should be one whole tree.

No I'm not calling you a neanderthal...it was the mental image I had for someone mauling a piece of tech without the proper training. "Yup Jimmy Bob, them Naruni sheets are pretty slick, heck I bet if we cut em inta little strips they'd work a heck of alot better. Why I'm gonna have Betsy Sue make me a beer holder outa one so's nobody steals my beer!!"

NP! Appology accepted and offered in return. Seems we both just jumped to assumptions without all the facts. No harm done so no foul. Besides why would I get upset over a conversation with a stranger just because they happen to disagree with me? I get that from my wife all the time so I'm pretty used to it!

By the way I once figured out how much it would cost to use those sheets to cover a spider skull walker....seems like it would cost over 2 mil. Pretty steep. So how much would your ghillie suit idea cost? As the strips actually take up more material that a simple sheet.

Hey Zer0 Kay, got another question for ya.
The strips on Ghillie suits are used to break up the outline of the solder wearing them. At least that's always been my understanding. Since the human brain processes information based on shapes and movement. So if the Naruni product in question blocks the entire shape, as it's a sheet that presumably covers the entire person, why would you even need the strips? Honestly I'm not trying to restart an argument!! Just an honest question!!
It just seems like a lot of money spent for something that isn't really neccessary. If the sheets, or if it's put on armor, (Which the Naruni apparently could do for any armor according to my interpretation of the new Naruni book) and it makes the wearer blend into the surrounding terrain, why the need to break up thier silouette? See what I mean?

Simply because I want to.

Besides I figure if it can mimic anything and if their are micro processors then maybe you can pay the faceless money grubbers to make it so that the Ghillie suit replicates leafy folliage or brush only and not try to replicate rock or bark. Hmm unless of course the strips are over a solid sheet of the stuff then that could be programmed to replicate the trunk or a rock etc.
Mostly because I wanted to. Hey go to my TW invention thread and see what you think about the few of mine that I listed.

I second the motion, which is why I used a cape - they are always in fashon. That and my character only scavenged a human sized sheet of the stuff (scavengers can't be choosers) - and the cape was the fastest way to start using the sheet.
