WHY Do you play rifts.

Unread post by Display-Name-Alpha »

This isnt a complaining thread, this is jsut a question of what about rifts is apealing to you, and your reasons for playing it.

I play rifts becasue I love the power. IT is very simple to get really powerful and godlike with the right combinations of classes, and abgilities.

For example, Godling taking two magic classes, High Mage, and Mystic Knight. You not only will have every single general wizard spell in the books by level 10, but you can also deny other people access to nexuses and ley lines. And You can use all the energy in an area for yourself.

That to me is the definition of power. And with all the bonuses and what not your save versus other peoples magic will be upwards of +10. The endless possibilities that you can create. And afte you have effectivly mastered the art of spell casting you can take Another class of magic. Say, Technowizidry, and market your own line of technowizidry items.

I play Rifts for the setting, primarily the Main Book setting. The post-apocalyptic amalgam of supertech, magic, and psionics has so many possibilities.

I play it for the endless OCCs and RCCs you can play. D&D is getting better, but it's still more limited than I prefer.

I play Palladium in general due to the options, flexability and wide diversity available. Between the Chaos earth survival,m post apocalyptic Main Book, and Super Hero and Fantasy you can just about do or be anything.

Why play Rifts?
Great world to play in, cool character classes, power armor, robots, monsters and magic.
Also I really like the ever shifting political situation, there's just so many angles you can play, it's not just the typical "big bad evil threatens the world, YOU must stop it with the *insert powerful magic artifact here*".
The word "THAN" is important. Something is "better than" something else, not "better then", it's "rather than" not "rather then".

The Reaosn i did Play Rifts:

The Ability to play what you want in amost any setting.
a Seamingly better Rules set than most games.
i Love Big Robots and Action.

Reasons I went to D20 D&D over Rifts.

Balanced Rules set, with Few(er) Game breaking Rule problembs
Better Quality hard cover books ( I've found i prefer hard cover books, seam to handel wear and tear of gamming better)

If Palladium Would Do a Basic Palladium system book, covering SDC & MDC, Skills, Character Creation, & Solidfiy the Combat Rules.

Giant robots, power armor and the raw possibilities that exist in adventurer teams. Where else can a ninja team up with a dolphin in power armor to fight pirates? Or a drug addicted super soldier join forces with a wizard to stop a demon from laying waste to a village while fighting off his flooper minions?

More possibilities than anything out there. Bar none.

I've always loved the post-Apocalypse motif, which is how I viewed the main book. When the other books came out, the game sprawled out into so many directions, a player or GM can now do whatever they want. Throw in the likes of Vagabonds and Godlings, and a campaign can be local or epic on a whim.

To boot, the rules are simple and it's a heckuva lot cheaper than most other RPGs out on the shelves.

That and being able to play a dragon and still have a balanced character is ALWAYS a plus!

If all your after is power go play Synnibar, if you can still find it. Rifts is more appealing it has more flavor, a story line that grows as it goes along. You could probably take all of the fluff printed in the books right now and make an ok book.

I play Rifts because I started playing Robotech, then TMNT, then added N&S and HU to TMNT all the while playing BtS and PFRPG and Mechanoids with a smattering of Recon. When the hype for the new game came out I thought it would be great. All of the Palladium games combined into one. Once I got it I realised it was better.

You not only have all the Palladium games combined into one to make a unique game but you can bring in all of your other Palladium game characters with little conversion. Not only could you bring in Palladium characters but with some conversion bring in any character for any roleplaying game you have ever made. Heck even for games that aren't roleplaying types, like Warhammer 40K. Even if you want to bring a God over your GM can make it manageable through the same plot tool that makes everything else possible... The RIFTS.

Another thing that kept me and most of my friends playing is that you basically got to play hero's going against a facist dictator trying to take over America then the World under the guise of defending humanity.

Aegis wrote:I like the power aspect of Rifts but I have always liked horror movies and the ones where the good guy wins against the supernatural, I dont like the non supernatural horror movies what danger is there really (take that scream :-P )

So in Rifts I can make a character to go out find the cocky nasty evil horrible monsters and find a way to kill them and prove my superiority. I know I must have problems :-D

Aegis, opens himself too open

Oh come on most (not all) of the "supernatural" horror movies are unbelievable and lend themselves to humor rather than terror. I'd say that many of the best horror movies are Hitchcock. Something is infinitely more terrifying if you think that it can happen.

There's something wrong with you if you think that a boy can return from the dead to avenge his death on any sexually active teen couple and anyone who gets in his way, because his camp couselors were too "busy" to notice his stupidity.

The only good supernatural horror is gothic. Where they use implied danger instead of using gore. It's sad when the scene in Predator II (an action movie) where the pigeons fly on the roof top is scarrier than, any moment in a "Friday the 13th", "Nightmare on Elm Street" or "Halloween" movie.

Out of all the current hack and slash movies I'd have to say TX chainsaw massacre would be the best even with all the gore its scarriest part is that it is supposedly based on a real case that is unsolved.
Blair Witch Project because it was filmed to appear real.
Best current horror movie Hannibal (I haven't seen Red Dragon) because there could be an intellectual cannibal.

Another not necessarily horror but in a parallel genre would be the Sci Fi channel's "documentary" on M. Night Shyamalan where they attempt to make the fantastic seem real, I especially liked M. Night Shyamalan's message on the answering machine at the end.

I consider something more scary if it causes all the hairs of the audience to stand on end from a sudden realization rather then causing them to scream out in disgust because their senses were suddenly and severley offended. Modern horror you don't scream because you fear it. You scream because you know what's coming and its disgusting. Gothic horror you scream because you don't know when it's coming, through out the entire film your anxiety builds not knowing when the terror will happen.

Another version of gothic I enjoy is the mind frag a classic example is H. P. Lovecraft's stories.

Perhaps more people enjoy the hack and slash horror to gothic because it requires less thought.

What! AD&D 2nd ed. had generic kits that were infinitely modifiable. Far more flexable than any OCC/RCC/PCC/MOS of any Palladium game. Don't get me wrong I enjoy Palladium more than TSR. Except maybe for race restrictions.

1) The great plot/setting

Things that keep me playing Rifts:

1) Relatively cheap books (have you priced D&D3rd ed? sheesh...)

2) Continued creativity/plot development from KS et. al.

I most certainly do NOT play it for:

1) Clear rules

2) Muchkin players that try take the limitless nature of Rifts too far

I play rifts because I can play a low powered game where The most powerful thing you fight is equal to a 20th century tank or as powerful as a godling or anything in between. And at the same time I can be a military sniper or soldier going after a magical creature or person or vice versa. There are many many possiblities in rifts. I can be in a horror type setting versus unspeakable evil. I can be in a sort of detective type game where there are subtle clues to find. I can play a sword weilding hero trying to liberate a town from an evil tyrant ruler or I can be someone trying to kill the hero to put a little town under my iron rule. Its a place where my imagination can run wild. If I can think of it I can add it.
-Thats why I love rifts so much.

Why do I play Rifts?
#1) The awesome setting!
#2) The infinite array of PC Class Choices all in one system/Game/World
#3) The inspired story-line that I have seen in the books! Will A.R.C.H.I.E.3 succeed in infiltrating the CS Skelebots? Will the Atlantis Resistance make any serious gains before they die? Can the NGR hold out agaist the Gargoyle and Brodkil Empires? Will Lazlo be attacked next by the CS? When will the truth about the Vampire Kingdoms be revealed to the CS and the rest of the world? Who will live and who shall fall before the Appocalypse Demons? Will the evil of Myrrlin ever be made known to the English King? What will the Russian Warlords do to each other-and when? Can ANYBODY survive an all-out battle with the Lord of the Deep?
When will that being stir from the bottom of the ocean? Will it fight or join the Appocalypse Demons?

Why I play Rifts???

Simple :-D

1) The Setting Rocks!
2) The nearly limitless options.
3) Cheap ass books! (I'm sick of WoTC/Hasbro and other D20 rippoffs).

I just like the feel of it. kind of a closet powerhog, but nothing like you have above. I go mind melter I'll grab abils that dont apply to combat just cause I think they would come in handy but wouldn't min max too much. plus I spell better than you. there is a spellcheck included man.

So you like rifts becasue you can spell better than me... thats rather unconventional but ok... if you feel better becasue you spell better... more power to you.

Well, I'm kinda burned out on Rifts at the moment... but when I did/do play Rifts, it's because of the setting.

Where else can you have Superman, Albus Dumbledore, Indiana Jones, Draco (from "Dragonheart"), Robocop, the Sundance Kid, and Obi-Wan Kenobi together in a group trying to save innocent villagers in a post-apocalyptic world from demons, monsters, bandits, and the ultimate incarnation of the Third Reich?

Rifts is one of those games that I both like and dislike. I like the setting and the fact that you can mix and max anything from the other Palladium books. I also consider it one of the best post apocalyatic game out there. Phase world is one of my favorite backgrounds. With the right GM and proper group of players the game really shines.

Now to what I dislike. The rules need a major change. There is too much focus on Rifts and other game lines are neglected. Don't even get me started on the Vanguard. How the hell do they get better magic knowledge than the more dedicated magic occs.

Anyway I like playing Rifts but it would not be my game of choice to run if I had something else I could choose from.
