The New TMNT Cartoon

Unread post by Daniel Stoker »

Well I've been watching the New TMNT series on Cartoon network, and I have to say for a Kids Cartoon they haven't done a bad job telling the story. Gone are Krang and Rocksteady and Bebop, the Shreeder and his Foot are an actual threat, as is Baxter Stockman. I also like the fact that they poke fun at the old cartoon like when Michelangelo swings across a hole yelling Leo looks at him and he responds, "What, at least I didn't yell Cowabunga." So while some details are messed still, I definatly give this new cartoon 2 thumbs up.

From the second season on, they made a number of dramatic changes to the series... the foremost being that Shredder is revealed to actually be a renegade Utrom. Yeah, I know: weird.

I also think that, with the possible exception of Raphael's character, the others are really just caricatures of the comic personalities.

But, hey, that's just me.

Like I said, 'For a Kids cartoon they haven't done a bad job of telling the story'. And you have to admit it's a LOT better then the original cartoon series.

I like it unforunately I never read the turtles comic so the closest I know is the old 80's Tv show and the movie.

Well I'm glad Baxter Stockman is black again, but why is April O'neal suddenly some tech-genius instead of a reporter, and still not hispanic?

Cause she was a Computer Programer in the Comic? And I thought she was black in the comics.....

Frankly I like the new cartoon. I thought that the kiddy stuff was removed and it reflected more of what the role-playing game was about.

I both like and appreciate that the new cartoon more closely resembles the comic. However, the fact that the cartoon deviates somewhat doesn't bother me. One, its something new for both old and new fans alike. Two, differences would bound to happen anyway. Such as the fact that the toon turtles are teens now while they are in their thirties in the comic.

This Show Kicks complete Butt!

its Closer to the old Comics then the old Cartoon, and has Pokes fun at its self. like When April O'neil Pretended to be a news anchot fo Channel "9" and wore a yellow jump suit.

I do like how the TCR Aliens are good Guys, but Making the Shreader one of them kinda bugged me, but was still good for Story telling. the Triceritons are nice,

Last episode i saw, they Kick his butt in the TCR Alines office, and the Little utron pops out of his stomach after they total his body. Maybe there is another Shreader, but the one they just killed is a Brain-man

Ahh, I saw one where the Triseriton was working with them and they took out a boat built by Stockman/shreadder... I get the Feelin The Shreader in this Series is alot like the one in the First Comics... he dies and dies agian, only to come back....
but what they hey, its alot better then the old cartoon.... stockman slowly becoming a test-tube monster is better then they FLy... and at least he's Black.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'd like too. I've always liked using the Triceratons in my ATB campaigns.

The new cartoon is actually closer to the B&W comic, since Peter Laird, who now owns the complete rights to TMNT, is overseeing it. The action figures are nice, but the original Playmates ones look much cooler. I have yet to see the Utrom figure (as seen in the cartoon).

I have a friend who read & got the voice-part for the characters Agent Bishop & (if they do run it) Savanti Romero. He lent me a demo tape of his voice-characterizations, and his Sean Connery fooled me! (and I can tell the vocal inflections in most impressionists). :D

I've got to give CN credit: the new cartoon is pretty cool and not quite as kiddy as the origional. Tho', shame on Mirage Studios: those toys are startin' to look pretty familiar...

The figures are nice looking, but I don't like the look of the Triceratons. And Fugitoid is silver/grey! Yeeesh. I haven't seen the Utrom figure yet (comes with it's own android body).

Well, thanks to the TMNT website & their shots in the toys section, the Utrom fig actually looks a lot like the ones from the B&W comic. And Nobody was rewritten as a NYC cop, and not the Northampton ex-cop he was in the comic. I'd LOVE to see the figure if they produce one! :D
The Tricerton figures, Triceraton Warrior, Cmdr. Mozar kinda look good, but the third fig, Traximus (for their Battle Nexus line), looks closest to the original Shogun Triceraton figure I've seen to date.

The evil Utrom later shows up when Karai (also from the TMNT comic, current run) shows up to take command of the NYC Foot & stabilize the power balance. It turns out the evil Utrom survived & is now back in an android body, as is Stockman (as the literal brain-in-a-jar).

I wanted to re-edit this posting with some new info. As I've stated before, a good friend of mine, David Zen Mansley, surprised me when he asked me all sorts of questions about the TMNT comics & did I know anything about the characters. I told him that some of the episodes draw on stories form the original black & white comic, but others were new. He further surprised me when he told me he was doing the voice of the character Agent Bishop, which made his first appearance in the ep. "Spaced Invaders pt.2". At the time, he did not recieve a name-credit, not even in the "Additional Voices" listing at the very end (this was later changed). He also did the voice of Savanti Romero in the ep. "Time Travails". I was able to catch the above ep.'s when they repeated just recently. I'm making a tape for him & his new wife to show off to their families.

Hey, you gotta start somewhere. Nobody every heard of Phil Lamarr until he made the voice of GL John Stewart on the JL cartoon a fan favorite. Not to mention NOBODY ever thought Mark Hamill could pull of a decent Joker.

A 4th season episode will feature an old favorite (which made an appearance early in the new TMNT comic)...... The Rat King.

:D

While I agree with your overall point about getting your start somewhere, Phil Lamar was an accomplished comedian way before Justice League. He was even a successful voice actor way before Justice League. Static Shock and Futurerama come to mind, not to mention Samurai Jack.

Mark Hamill was also a pretty accomplished voice actor before Batman TAS. And to those of us who remember his role as the Trickster on the Flash TV series, the Joker role was not that big of a surprise.

Not at all. That's one of the reasons these boards are here.

I think one of the other reasons is to keep Taffy off the streets for certain hours. Makes it easier for the city council's Secret Police Force to keep track of him. ;)
