But, in the game, isn't it more cool and cinematic to allow that sort of thing?
Does the game need to perfectly reflect reality?
I like the idea of an alternate reality where, during the Boxer Rebellion, martial arts did give the ability to survive gunfire (of course, not every martial artist will know those martial arts powers).

That depends on what you're going for.
There's a fine line between "cool" and "stupidly cheesey."

So, where is that line?
When you have characters like Juicers, Super-heroes, and Mystic Ninjas, where does that line fall?
Are all the cinematic characters doomed to fall before the gunplay of the "realistic" characters, just because they use guns? Why does the element of dodging bullets have to be 'cheesy'?

The line is up to you, really... but there IS a line.
Since movies have shown Ninjas catching bullets with their bare hands, that could be seen as "Cinematic"... but in gameplay (and in the audiences of those films) all you get is a bunch of people crying "Bull****!"

A lot of it depends on the game though... in TOON, anything goes. In BtS, things are a lot more realistic.

For the game, you better have a wallet stenciled with BMF to even try that. :D

And so do Wrist Hardening Exercises...
Heck, they give you 4 MDC, which means you can take a hit from a LAW half the time...

That's Rifts, which is it's own problems... I mean, if the Ghost Dance was done during Rifts, it would have worked. If the Boxer Rebellion was done during the time of Rifts, it would've worked.

If the above were tried in my N&SS games, they still would have got their asses handed to them.

Does that mean that you don't allow the use of Hardened Chi, or Body Chi, or other wild-cinematic abilities like Tamashiwara, or Karumi-Jutsu, or Mystic Invisibility?

Nah, it just says "Wrist Hardening adds 4 MDC."

Even if it were just your wrists, that makes it lamer...
you're hit by a LAW and blown into tiny chunks, except for your mighty wrists...

Not as lame as that one Iron Crotch body hardening. You're hit by a missile and blown into tiny chunks, except your mighty...yeah. :nh:

Is that the technique invented in Sweden and requiring a special pump for training?

Not within the modern games I run. I also don't allow psionics or magic, so it fits within the scheme of things. Now in the more cinematic games, I do allow hardened Chi and such, but I don't allow the Snake Style and Tai Chi combo that gave one character like 300+ chi or something crazy like that.

Ah.
Since I use psionics, magic, superpowers and alien technology, having 300 Chi would not be overbalancing.
I don't think I run a single modern setting game that is devoid of special abilities. I got enough of that with Twilight:2000, Top Secret SI, and others.

At one point our goal was to play Twilight :2000, then go to Traveller:2300 then go to Megatraveller.
Alas, it was not to be.
While we were able to get the platoon off the European continent and back to the USA, we only actually played ten games (very long sessions), before going back to other game systems.

I miss playing Twilight 2000. The system could have used some work, but it was a very detailed setting that had lots of potential.

One of the things I liked was the attention to military structure, and also the fragility of the characters. They weren't all of heroic, epic stature, which at the time was a change of pace. When I wanted a realistic game T:2K was a good choice.
What did you think of the follow ons, Traveller and Meagtraveller?

Traveller and Megatraveller aren't follow ons of T2K. Traveller was one of GDW's first games, coming out in 1977, with Megatraveller as basically the second edition of the game.
