What music do you find appropriate for N&S games
Does anyone even use music in their N&S games? If so, what do you use?

I always have background music, although for N&SS I don't use anything unusual. I try to keep to the basic mood establishers : quiet, suspenseful, hi-speed, etc.

If I run a historic oriental game, I will use my CT/HD soundtrack, but otherwise, any relaxing instrumental or light vocals will do to establish mood.
I like Jean Michael Jarre, Oakenfold, Enya, LoTR soundtracks, Last of the Mohicans, and Enter The Dragon Soundtrack.

Mine was stolen, and I haven't replaced it yet. I was just looking at the shelf to see what was there.
Okay, I was also looking for a Shriekback CD.

I use the Art Of Noise extended Twang Mix featuring Duane Eddy, but I use that for all my modern settings, not just N&SS.
Not too mention the Mission Impossible Theme (and/or Man from UNCLE).
I don't have these soundtracks, or I'd probably use them.

Gallahan wrote:Why indeed. Here it is: soundtracks add excitement. Think of your top ten all time favorite movies... Chances are, you will remember the musical score! The same goes for gaming. Here are some short and sweet guidelines for soundtrack use, and then the small list. Contact me for a more complete list if you want it.
RULE #1: Gear the soundtrack for you game. Most likely it's fantasy in nature, so you're in luck. If not, then focus on GENRE, such as "horror," or "science fiction."
RULE #2: Don't turn the music up too loud. Have it at the "right" volume: "right" is when the music is not too obtrusive and no one 1) has to talk OVER it, and 2) when everyone can hear what's going on.
Essential Music for Gaming:
1. Willow by James Horner
2. Conan the Barbarian by Basil Poledouris
3. Krull by James Horner
4. Conan the Destroyer by Basil Poledouris
5. The 13th Warrior by Jerry Goldsmith
6. Star Wars; Episode 2: Attack of the Clones by John Williams
7. "All" Star Wars by John Williams (he has MANY themes that don't involve the recognizable Star Wars themes in these scores)
8. First Knight by Jerry Goldsmith
9. Kull the Conquerer by Joel Goldsmith
10. Independence Day by David Arnold
11. The Perfect Storm by James Horner
12. Gladiator by Hanz Zimmer
13. Backdraft by Hanz Zimmer
14. Robinhood Prince of Thieves by Michael Kamen
15. Star Trek 2 & 3 by James Horner
16. Star Trek 6
17. Star Trek: Generations
18. Babylon 5: Messages From Earth
19. Lost in Space, the Movie
20. Starship Troopers by Basil Poledouris
21. Con Air
There are more, ---many, many more. Look around on sites like Amazon.com and Screenarchives.com and you will find TONS of soundtracks. The important thing is for you to get these scores, listen to them and compile YOUR OWN mixes from the BEST of these scores. Cut them to CDs or make your own audio tapes. Very few soundtracks/scores are perfect in their entirety. Most of them have music that aren't appropriate for gaming (too quiet, too unusual, etc.). So, get several, pick and choose, and then make your own mix.
Uhm...I gotta say no to several of these myself. But the list may be useful for other people.
Oh, and there's some other stuff listed over at Why Soundtracks
Symphonic Orient
There are some really good scores/CDs I used in an Oriental themed fantasy, which would work great with Ninjas and Superspies. Here's a short list of options:
1. Kojiko by Kitaro (found in "new age" sections; try Amazon)
2. Mandala by Kitaro
3. Sacred Journey of the Ku-Kai (both volumes, by Kitaro; try Ebay)
4. The Last Samurai
5. SHOGUN (a little hard to find, but GREAT)
6. Dragon (The Bruce Lee Story soundtrack)
7. The Last Emperor (try Amazon)
8. Beyond Rangoon by Hans Zimmer (try Amazon)
9. Mulan (not the song selections)
10. Rambo: First Blood Part 2 by Jerry Goldsmith (try Amazon)
If you're limited on funds, order a Kitaro CD, The Last Samurai, Rambo 2 and another Kitaro CD. Make a mix, and there ya go.
There are some more out there that I'm forgetting right now, and I'll list them when they come to mind. But these are more than enough.
OH, AND ALSO: Try the Kill Bill soundtracks for an eclectic, weird mix to your modern day Ninja Epics!

Actually, for oriental theme music I go with Japanese traditional music done by the Ensemble Nipponia, though Shogun Total War had some tracks available for download that also work well.
I agree: there's nothing like traditional Japanese music, especially if it includes bamboo flute and koto... and Japanese drums. Kitaro happens to use those instruments in his work, along with guitars (from time to time) and heavy in synthesizer which is perfect for a Ninjas and Superspies or RIFTS campaign, and it works with Mystic China too, because of his style.
When you venture into the Asian new age style of music, there is so much out there that it's too extensive to list. But... imagine the music of Enigma mixed with cool Oriental music, and you get: Bhudda Cafe or Cafe Buddha ---something like that. Do a search on Amazon and you'll find it. I went into a shop looking for a bokken or shinai or just something cool... and that music was in the background. COOOOOL Asian themed music.

I prefer Shamisen and Koto myself. Though there's some good taiko stuff out there. Especially that song done as the "Klingon Battle Song" for Star Trek.
