1st ed. BtS Questions

Unread post by gordyzx9r »

I'd like to pick up a copy of an original BtS...I want a 1st edition.

Is there a certain printing that is more desirable than others?

Was there a hardcover version of BtS for the 1st ed.?

How many books make up the 1st ed. BtS library?

Did BtS have "the" insanity tables that were later taken out of other Palladium products.

I have a 2nd printing, and it doesn't have the sexual deviancy table. I've only heard of them being in TMNT&OS and 1st Edition PF.

Okay, that's weird. I have a copy of TMNT&OS with the deviancy chart and it was covered over by the previous owner too. Fortunately I can still make out the original rules by holding the page up to a light.

My friend's copy had that....the label type sticker over the top of it....probably should have mentioned that....

I have 3 different printings of TMNT&OS...one with the word strangness spelled incorrectly (on the binding or the cover...I'll have to look again), a fifth printing (both of those two have the aforementioned tables), and the third copy of the book is a tenth printing and doesn't have them. I have seen some ebay auctions that said their copy had the tables steamed off.

The label or the table? "Cause the one I saw on ebay said the table was steamed off the page.

My PF 1st ed actually has the sticker. It's a sticker with the current table (in most books) applied over the old table. So technically, they manage to remove the (new) table, leaving the (old) table exposed.

I found that a strong lamplight and the ability to read print backwards as I was looking at the backside of the page did just fine in copying the old one down, without risking damage to the book.

So Palladium didn't "steam" the deviance tables off the books then? I wonder if the one I saw on ebay was done by a parent, or a distributor maybe?

Ummm, no Palladium put a label OVER the deviancy tables...someone steamed the new insanity table/label off, thus REVEALING the deviancy table...

What the listing said was that the deviancy tables were steamed off the pages and you could no longer see them.

What a coincidence...I'm currently bidding on two copies on ebay and they are also 5th and 3rd printings.

Well, I won one of the 1st ed. BTS on ebay...$3.50+S&H, came out to $9, says it was in mint condition with no highlighting, writing, fraying, rips, tears, yellowing, creases, etc...we'll see.

Wow! Great deal!!! Of course, I bout mine in actual stores, long before they went out of print...

I was never interested in it then...I was the same way with Robotech until Palladium's license lapsed and then I had to have the library.

I also have a copy of TMNT with the oriignal chart on it and if I remember correctly, Palladium was sued buy the PTA and Gay and Lesbian rights group for the chart. The court threw out the Gay and Lesbian suit, because it was proven that you could devolp a sexual deviation from a psychological trauma, but Palladium lost against the PTA, because the game was marketed towards a younger age group. The remaining copies had revised tables labeled over them and future copies were printed with new tables.

Where did you hear that? The last time I remember this coming it was said they were pulled for being in bad taste and have never heard of any lawsuits.

I ordered my copy of BTS via mail order while stationed at Blytheville AFB, Arkansas, from an ad in Dragon magazine waaaaay back when that was noveau. This was before RIFTS even came out, if I remember correctly, or AS RIFTS was coming out. So mine is probably first edition. I'll check and see if my copy has the table(s) because I do remember something about these tables.

I wrote a letter to Palladium, after receiving this edition/copy of BTS because it was such a well written, atmospheric piece of work. The letter complimented them to high heaven! And then, tears came to my eyes when, upon opening my first copy of RIFTS first ed, BLYTHEVILLE, ARKANSAS was mentioned. Could have been a huge coincidence... Who knows? Well, I guess in this case, Kevin Himself knows. But regardless of *why* an obscure little place like Blytheville, Arkansas was mentioned in RIFTS, I like to think my letter about BTS 1st ed (sent from mentioned place) might have actually been read, and they might have included such a tiny detail to a huge fan <sniffle>.

Just to update...I got both books I was bidding on, a 3rd & a 5th printing...very surprised at their condition...I don't think anyone ever used them (and subsequently I probably won't use them unless by some miracle I can find a group).
